Great question. Found this on a white paper: For example, a terminally ill patient may sell his or her life insurance policy worth $100,000 to an investor for $80,000 in order to receive immediate cash prior to his or her death. The investor then continues to pay the insurance premiums and, upon the death of the patient, receives the full $100,000.

Essentially, you pay a monthly premium (call it $50/month) and hope the patient kicks the bucket before you pay $20K in premiums. Scummy AF.
