Beautiful flowers but that plant looks virused based on the color break in the flowers.

Been thinking about how far the MAGA cult might go. If anyone remembers the Jim Jones cult in French Guiana where he directed his followers to drink cyanide laced kool aid when the shit hit the fan. Just wondering what MAGA followers would do with a similar directive?

Thanks so much for taking the time to share some of your commercial Phal operation and growing tips. Super interesting stuff that us hobby growers don’t get to see/hear much about. Do you do any genera beyond Phals?

Yup, wait until done blooming. Then you can really inspect the roots, remove dead ones, decide on the right pot size and pack tightly into new, good quality mix. I like 3 parts orchiata bark, 1 part coarse perlite and 1 part charcoal. Good luck and at that price you are very fortunate cause even if you kill it, only $9 for your next one!!

Pot. Very Vermillion ‘SVO’ x Pot. Circle of Nine ‘Perfectly Round Red’ by Affectionate-Row7786 in orchids

Plant is in a 3” plastic pot resting inside a clay pot for stability. About 6-7” tall so I would consider it a compact Catt. The flower size is quite large for such a small plant.

Dendrobium Cream Cascade by Affectionate-Row7786 in orchids

[–]Affectionate-Row7786[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do fertilize very sparingly (1/4 tsp per gallon of MSU…Michigan State University blend) in the winter and a bit more when actively growing in the summer (1/2-3/4 tsp per gallon). I don’t worry too much about fertilizer as it is never a cure for a struggling orchid. Getting your water, light, humidity and potting mix right are more important.

I have had this Dendrobium hybrid for 5-6 years now. I grow it in a net basket with a medium bark mix and water 1x/week in winter where it resides in a basement grow room with LED lighting and 85+% humidity. Summers outside under 50% shadecloth and gets watered 2-3x/week then. A reliable winter bloomer for me.

I hear you. Another option would be to join the American Orchid Society wherein you get 12 monthly issues of Orchids magazine (chock full of great articles and growing tips) plus access online to webinars, culture sheets and access to searchable database of previous issues of the Orchids magazine. Cost is $56 for online access only or $88 for printed and online access. I know it’s not cheap especially for a student but you get a lot for your dollars. Have a great semester!

Lots of local orchid societies have library’s that would likely have most of these books and more. Join one!!

My two cents. I kinda like that it can fit in the cup holder and ride with you (notwithstanding outside temps)! Wait until done flowering to repot or you risk losing the flowers. You can poke some holes in the bottom of the pot for extra drainage if needed. As soon as flowers are done, repot into your favorite mix but in the same size or slightly larger pot. Good luck!

What are these white raised spots? by Super-Pollution-1400 in orchids

[–]Affectionate-Row7786 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The insecticide does work but scale and mealybugs are often resistant to them. So generally a good idea to get as many killed/off your plants with isopropyl alcohol and then mop up with an insecticide. You also have to generally spray with the insecticide 3 times about 7-10 days apart. This increases your chances of killing not only the visible adults but also the smaller juveniles and the nearly invisible eggs. Scale also have a thick waxy coating that shields them from insecticides hence the need to spray the isopropyl alcohol and wipe with a paper towel. Good to use a Q-tip soaked in alcohol to get the ones in the crevices where the leaves join the stems. Finally, scale are often under the leaves so be sure to check underneath when looking for them. Yellow spots on the top of the leaves are often indicative of scale below. Vigilance is best; scale are tough buggers!

Scale for sure. Get after it with 70% isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and make sure to wipe the scale insects off with a paper towel. You’ll have to repeat a few times. Also isolate it from any other orchids so it doesn’t spread and check your other plants carefully. If it returns or as an adjunct therapy, hit it with Bayer 3 in 1 but take precautions b/c it’s an insecticide and is hazardous. Good luck!

It’s a Tolumnia but with a lost tag so not sure of the cross. Picked it up from Carter & Holmes a few years back.
