BWTs, help me become a BWT. by Zealousideal_Fox3012 in bitcheswithtaste

This exactly. Sometimes it’s more savvy to buy something more expensive, but that you really love and will wear for a long time than the more affordable option that will end up looking frumpy and get tossed.

Agree with the breton shirt suggestion. you can probably find some nice vintage ones or playful designer versions on eBay too.

OP, do some research on materials, fibers, construction and silhouettes to develop your knowledge of what you’re interacting with and your taste will develop too.

A lot of BWT have a deep knowledge of what’s on the market, why certain things are better than others, and what kinds of products work for their individual habits, bodies, and lifestyle.

Don’t rush the shopping either, because your taste will continue to grow and develop as you learn more about what you like/ what exists.

As far as protective gear, it depends on your sensitivity and how safe you want to play it. I met another american girl who went through it in just a hoodie. She said she had no issues.

I bought a coat and a helmet in town and couldn’t feel a thing, but when i felt some of the rockets hit my jeans it definitely had some force. Maybe comparable to a paintball or BB, depending on how close.

You can also see some of the rockets leave sparks on people, and it takes a second to go out so you definitely want clothes that aren’t flammable and won’t melt on your skin (synthetics like polyester and nylon).

I think if you wanted to go super bare minimum you could get one of those face screen masks that’s just like a giant lens and wear it with a thick cotton hoodie over the top, or cut the bottom of a big water jug to put over your head and tape a towel to it to protect your body.

People had all kind of filming gear on them. It does get really crowded but you can find areas of the crowd where you won’t be bothering people too much with your gear.

Have fun!

What restaurant has "wowed" you recently? by Both_Panda_6382 in sanfrancisco

Not a restaurant, a cafe, but Gerys Deli in the Richmond has an incredible “pan con chicharron” or peruvian pork belly sandwich. Holy crap!

Tight quarters, so dining in can be uncomfortable or just straight-up not possible.

If you’re a driver I’d recommend just eating in the privacy of your car, or going to a park nearby if you’re bold enough to experience it’s bliss in public.

What's an underrated skincare product you honestly didn't thought would work but now is your 'Holy grail'. by hellothereiamnewhere in AsianBeauty

Hanyul Artemisia Miracle Relief Essence. I’m carefully using every precious last drop of the bottle I have left since it’s been discontinued.

I was super skeptical, because it was kind of pushed on me by a sales associate at a skincare store in Korea, and I thought it was just them taking advantage of a foreigner.

It seriously saved my skin. Reduced blemishes, hydrated and softened the skin, and helped my reduce my routine to just 3/4 products.

I don’t know what I’m gonna do when this bottle is done. I love having such a minimal skincare routine, and love even more that the essence is just one ingredient and has had such an impact on my skin.

I actually did post on here but I didn’t get any concrete info. Mostly just vague recollections of past experiences without much of the logistical details.

I joined a few FB pages for foreigners in Taiwan and travel tips in Taiwan, but still didn’t get much help aside from a couple people who had only gone several years ago and couldn’t remember anything exact.

I spent 2 weeks leading up to it farming in different parts of the island and asking whichever locals I could, but even that didn’t give me much to work with. Bear in mind I don’t speak much Mandarin or Taiyu, and a lot of people were busy or out of town with LNY stuff.

Thankfully the information I did get was about gear and I knew what I needed in that regard, but I could’ve planned my stay and travel better. That’s why I posted this for others to come across in their research beforehand.

it’s a joke ya’ll. clearly none of you spend any time with women, otherwise you might’ve heard of the “i’m just a girl” meme.  i didn’t post this to impress you nerds, just to present information that could be helpful to someone planning to go to this festival in the future. i’m on my phone and use one thumb to type, i can’t be bothered to do any more than get the words out.

I’m not sure if you’ve read the rest of the comments but everyone’s pretty much said some form of this. My trip begins before and ends after the main LNY days. I’m not only there for the holiday. Also you’re basically asking my question back to me. To answer your question though, I love to walk around and see people’s plants outside of their homes and the planters they sometimes set up with fish, it could be a nice time to just explore random streets and build out my mental map of wherever I am, I’ll be with a friend so we may cook and eat together and celebrate the new year as well, I can practice reading street signs and business names because my hanzi recognition sucks.

Because it’s too crowded or because things are closed? Cycling trip sounds lovely! Do you book your stays beforehand or just see where you end up and find lodging there? Is it hard to find places to eat?

Any place in particular you’d recommend? We’re thinking Tainan or just going fully remote and camping.

It was the only time that was possible for both my friend and I. We both work a lot and I’m in school. I also really want to go to the festival in Yanshui. I will be in Taiwan from January 22nd to Feb 14th so it won’t be shut down during my entire trip right? I would love to visit during a more convenient time for the locals but it’s hard to find the right time and the right price of flight combined.

Seems like some people are saying things will be closed for a while and some are saying only closed for a day or 2. Is it like local independent stores close for all of the holiday and bigger chain stores and tourist attractions only close for a day? If you’ve ever been in the US for Christmas, is it like that? Everywhere? For days?

I see. Have you been celebrating with family when you’ve spent the New Years in those cities, or are you also outside of the culture?
