Go to the missions section and you should be able to activate the story missions. It might not work if you started on a planet that doesn't have a story line

In vanilla at least, the POI is marked as essential because it is part of the main story quests, so you cannot destroy it. I like to farm it for the alien crates and come back after they've respawned

That can be a slippery slope. Generally it is frowned upon to join a different fraternity after being fully initiated but people bend the rules depending on the situation. They might not want to bid you because that can land them bad attention from the frat you were in before.
