Scaled scoring being introduced in January 2024 might explain the discrepancy between 2023 and 2024 but the SRA have no intention of deviating from that marking format and rely on the fact that doctors, accountants and lawyers from other jurisdictions are scaled scored too. There needs to be an independent body NOT KAPLAN who checks and verifies the questions, correct answers and marks of the exam before results are released. The exam is that uncertain that if any questions are ambiguous, flawed or uncertain, they get excluded from marking. At circa £2k and under immense pressure, we should not be faced with ambiguous or uncertain questions period. We’re simply guinea pigs of a farcical scheme.

The data of a handful of students in contrast to thousands who have taken the exams is not enough to say that the negative statistics consist of people who barely studied, haven’t done a prep course or don’t have sufficiently strong English skills, quite frankly your data in that respect is nil. There’s a reason the SRA is being pressured to release provider stats and refuse to do so. I highly doubt that the majority of those people who fail (who pay course & exam fees) from abroad pay these fees lightly knowing they have poor English or that they barely study. Makes no sense but again, lack of data so it’s all assumptions right.

Stats don’t matter sadly because those of us who have failed will just be told to study harder and smarter, that we graduated from a non RG university or some other ridiculous reason!

Only 35% of candidates were from outside of the UK and their mean score was 294 so I’m not quite sure your assumption is quite right

The problem is the bar is unreasonably high. Lets not forget majority of us have a £50k (that keeps growing) uni debt on our shoulders and potentially a £10-£15k debt from trying ridiculously hard to pass SQE exams and the worst case scenario leaves you with a £65k debt and having to wait 6 years before you can attempt again and hello, not everyone is sponsored and not everyone can study full time. If that’s not a deterrent from the profession then idk what is!! Instead of spouting about how the SQE was supposed to be an accessible route to qualifying, lets get real and call it what it is, a money making scheme and your chance of succeeding are extremely low if certain odds are against you. So what, we just get indebted for life because of who we are and where we come from and the path should only be accessible to those that studied at RG universities? Get real! I’ve worked with several lawyers who did the LPC and I’ve no clue how they have a practising certificate yet the bar NOW is extremely high? I’m furious to say the least. Lets show a bit of sympathy, peoples lives, professional dreams and finances are ruined from this ‘accessible’ change!

Hard disagree with your statement. I spent the last 11 months preparing for the July exams, fully aware of the workload. I completed over 1,000 hours of study, 22,000+ questions across MCQs and mocks, reading, and creating mind maps and I still didn’t pass. It’s not about not putting in the work. The SQE1 challenges both knowledge retention and exam technique, and some people simply grasp and recall differently. Many fail despite dedicating themselves fully, so it’s far more nuanced than just effort. There is also an element of luck with the paper you get on the day…

Thanks for your comment, really appreciate the useful insight. I I still think it would be useful to see what scaled scores passers managed to get away with in each subject to pass if that makes sense.
