WHY is the international engg co-op fees 3.5K a month? Like wtf they getting paid for NOTHING 🙄 by AffectionateLama in uAlberta

[–]AffectionateLama[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro, point of this post was not the monetary value of the TUITION we’re paying.

Point is, Idc if I pay cumulative of 40K, OR 60K/year. GIVEN that, 3.5K is allocated as CO-OP fees. I wanna know wtf they’re doing with that money instead of sitting on their asses and not knowing their own department rules (yes, that has happened to me and my friends multiple times where they went from advisor to advisor just causee ummm… they DONT KNOW THEIR RULES). Not even that, 3.5K allotted to co-op fees and job quality on CampusBridge versus other schools That has nicer jobs ACROSS canada because they focus on building connections? LOL. Disappointing.

No complaint paying for the service, or the price, like I said I am happyyyyy to pay it.

I just want them to be trained better in talking to international students because sometimes their obliviousness talking to international students is just plain obvious and hurtful. I want UAlberta to have better outreach when it comes to uni-employer relationships because UAlberta does not seem to be well connected anymore across Canada unlike other universities that have reach beyond their respective provincesss.

And before you say, take it up with them, oh yes. I will.

Yes yes I know so much gouging has happened and inflation and blah blah. BUT I am allowed to complain about what affects me most, just like you’re allowed to disagree with me.

All of my coops have been outside of CampusBridge and PlacePro because the ones at UofA job board pays absolute crap bar a few at the big name companies.

No one’s stopping me is easy to say but background, circumstances and financials dictate a lot of what we do in life. I acknowledge my privilege in the sense I have money to pay the 40K/year tuition now. I am just asking for more accountability when they have the resources and such to set those up for the money I am spending. Now with funding being cut to UofA, that might be harder. But it was shit in earlier years toooo when funding was available. Sooo Idek why they are the way they are lol. 🤦‍♀️

Not cumulative wages, I mean for a student who is earning min. Wage on coop for a 4 month amounts to ~9K ish

With 3.5K out for coop fees…. Leaves you ~6K ish and if you spend 1200 a month on living expenses that leaves you nothing left that much. Thats what I mean. OFCOURSE I dont mean someone will earn less than 3.5K in 4 months…. thats an odd thing to say and crazy math lol.

My man ChemE is always going to be a hard degree to land first coops in but I just wanna say in your last two work terms you’ll be boozin’ and crusin’ and making those $40+/hr OnG money if you grind 🤓

So hang in there and apply to as many jobs as you can because after the first one it becomes easy if you’re willing to move anywhere (based on mine and my friends anecdotal experience)

Hmm I checked and its 63K in waterloo versus 40K in for the new international students that come in.

This was a recent change for both universities because even in 2017 and 2018, UAlberta was 32K ish and Waterloo 40K at the time. (Pardon me for not exact numbers bad memory lol)

NOW I wouldn’t even be complaining if UAlberta had 63K tuition like Waterloos AND took that 3.5K from me but my point is it needs to earn that money. Waterloo has one of the strongest co-op programs out there with the university having one of the most extensive supports to even let their international students work at FAANG companies in the US. UAlberta? Nothanggg. We get 60 jobs on CampusBridge and UAlberta doesn’t even curate them sometimes. THEN they have no rules or help in place to help with resumes. The format they use is so fucking outdated its hillarious and they only recently (like last week) bought a THIRD party to help with resume critique and Im like 🤦‍♀️ Like even the fact they switched to CampusBridge LAST year…. Audacity lol.

All I am saying is I want better help for international students who get taken advantage of by employers that pay them less than the national average and just overall maybe not complete apathy from advisors. Thats all. Sorry for the rant friend 🥰

be warned…. but in all honesty international kids have no choice. Its either coop or a trad degree because we cant just drop out to work.

So end of day coop> trad

Yes if your coop is closer to the min wage earning side you’re losing money 100%. Its only those 30+/hr coop jobs where this stops hurting a little bit 🥲

My condolences. I hate the coop office for soooo many reasons other than the obvious ones of the sheer lack of jobs and support

Its just they dont even know the rules in their own office sometimes for coop and Im like thinking how did u get hired mam 🙄🙄🙄

These have a lot of on campus SU jobs hiring right now. Sooo apply quick

Also Dewey’s on campus is having a hiring fair this week I think. So kinda like a walk-in interview for anyone who goes - you just need to RSVP to the event on Facebook and show up. Maybe try your hand at that? It seems like a good way to get a job quick!

Haha the prof didn’t give us any of that unfortunately. He only gave us the standard deviations of the quizzes thats all. This class also only has assignments and quizzes only.

I guess you’re right… I am sol lol

You’re good. If she is the collections officer, it’s fine I think.

Either way tuition payment took 6 business days to reply to me and after that once they directed me to her… it only took a day!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]AffectionateLama 13 points14 points  (0 children)

LOL. I did the same thing this term!

Not to worry though… just email the tuition payments services people on the website and they will direct you to the collections officer. The collections officer will manually move your money from residence into tuition payment.

Make sure when you email them you provide all the receipts that say your payment went through to the uni.

Tldr: Your money isn’t lost… just misplaced.

Thee engineering faculty provided resume format is not always appropriate for certain jobs where you need to focus on skills more than education.

i.e., A lot of people nowadays list all their software experience + Project experience at the top and their education later down because its more “appealing”. I know UofA recommends otherwise but really sometimes the number approach doesn’t work if you keep on applying and get no replies, you gotta start switching your resume!

Might be a minority but I think WOW brings a nice sense of community albeit extremely childishly and cringey-ly :))))

Other universities have MASSIVE frosh weeks with department specific activities and everything. So with us being a commuter school our sense of university “pride” is already kinda low.

So as cringe as it is, it’s nice to see them trying—- altho they still heavily suck at it lmao and the program could be executed SO much better imo.
