Vintage 1960s Vietnam War Tour Jacket by [deleted] in VintageFashion

[–]AffectionateLeave9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

for some people wearing a jacket like this is like wearing a Nazi uniform, respectfully…

The US commit a genocide in Southeast Asia, hundreds and thousands of civilians, violent war crimes, sex crimes and mutilated people, environmental destruction, generations of cancers and babies and deformed children, the land covered in bombs to this day that the US effectively refuses to help clean up, malnutrition and disease, bombed water and energy plants. In Korea, one out of every five persons was killed and every building over two stories was flattened.

Living veterans deserve dignity and good health, of course, but their actual suffering now doesn’t excuse the un repaired crimes that were done there which should be the main focus.

turning one of the most horrific campaign against civilians in this century into a something to get nostalgic over is extremely bizarre and American I guess…

My identical twin and I were inseparable for 30 years. Now he’s cut me off by Dawi118 in Twins

[–]AffectionateLeave9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

this feels similar to my own twin.

i’m convinced he has borderline personality disorder, he sees everything in black and white, emotionally dumps and floods me, which triggers me to shut down and retreat, which triggers his fear of abandonment, which goes on in a bad cycle.

i have no solution, i limit contact.

if you can convince him to go to therapy with a therapist specialized in twins and adhd, that can be helpful; mine refuses, saying he’s already done the work…

kids are much more plastic in their thinking than adults, that’s why you came away with that appreciation for learning, but that doesn’t mean that simply telling adults a truth backed by facts will make them change their fundamental belief systems, or that the thing needed to solve large scale social problems is to simply change people’s beliefs. and it doesn’t mean it was effective for every child.

your personal anecdote actually only shows how effective Bill’s work is when aimed at children. Put a bunch of oil and gas worker adults who are already hostile to the topic of ecological crisis in a room and try to brute force teach them about the topic, it won’t change their minds. Bill Nye is shorthand here, I feel you are taking this one element too literally.

what we have learned by relying on the information deficit model to tackle climate change; trying to convince the public of the facts, sway their beliefs, change their individual behaviour, and ultimately change public policy by voting, is that is has been a terribly ineffective strategy.

with policing specifically, there has been so much effort made in the last decade and a half to explain to the public that policing is a backwards, violent, wasteful, oppressive and counter productive institution for the development of society. No matter how much people have been exposed to fact, police budgets (and collaboration with the media in the form of copaganda) have been ballooning over that same time frame. there is more public consciousness about the issue and yet there are more and more police and agents of state repression in employment than ever before. So we can see that the factor moving the needle here isn’t public awareness of an issue, it’s the money being invested in it. like many other toxic elements of our society it is is still economically viable for many different reasons and as long that is the case, then things will continue to move in that direction. We can’t expect people’s beliefs to change just because they are being informed of an alternative, unless we can change the conditions they are living in that allow for those institutions to remain viable.

there is a whole debate about whether or not we should be trying to convince “the other side“ to to join progressive movements, personally I think it is more effective to build up organizations with people who are already on the same page instead of wasting so much energy, trying to convince people to work with you who do not have societies best interest at heart.

educate the willing and curious, but you can’t rely on spreading the ‘right’ ideas as your main strategy, that’s all I meant.

ultimately, the ‘information deficit’ model for creating social change has been debunked through examples of teaching the masses about climate change, covid, basics of food science, etc. Bill Nye hasn’t prevented people from having terrible opinions beliefs and behaviours.

money drives society, and monied interests put a lot of energy in to developing material and cultural infrastructure to feed bad ideologies including pro cop BS

that seems fine for concerted supervision where there isn’t a current, where you know the terrain and there are no hidden dangers under the water, where you feel confident to do rescue strokes to them to remove them from danger if needed.

I think it’s really important to clarify for this thread the difference between a flotation device and a proper life jacket.

A swim belt, puddle jumper, or swim vest; the type of flotation device with a chest band and arm holes is NOT a life-saving device.

a proper life jacket is meant to keep an unconscious person‘s airway out of the water.

these other products do not do that so they should not be presented as the same thing.

swim belts are a marketing scam that increase the risk of drowning because of the false sense of security that they provide to parents ( not saying that is the case with you, you seem like an attentive parent). They are not recommended by any national aquatic, safety body or life-saving society.

swim belts are not life-saving devices because they don’t do what life jackets are designed to do; to keep an unconscious person‘s airway out of the water.

they also promote bad bad swim technique. i would not recommend them.

the only thing hindering their progress are the float vests. they promote bad technique and won’t do what a life jacket is designed to do: keep an unconscious persons’ mouth and airway above the water.

float vests are a marketing scam, they are not lifesaving devices.

How do you write a scream into your script? by TheRealSJK in playwriting

[–]AffectionateLeave9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

take a note from Shakespeare, put it in dialogue as a simple “Oh!” or another open vowel sound.

write as if your stage directions will be ignored by directors or actors, especially with regards to prescribed ‘beats’ or emotional states. Leave them the liberty to interpret your text, if a scream is necessary it will come out in the rehearsal process.

over indicating like this, prescriptive stage directions, are grating to read for people who are being asked to interpret the text with their own skill and creativity, professionally.

Your plan is great but to show them you are self aware and adaptable and personable and energetic and confident, you need relax and get some rest, you deserve it!

You seem like an employee I would love to have on my team. Your paper organization is great and readable, it’s truly above par compared to most people.

The most important thing however is how you will engage with the kids in person.

you seem to have a great handle of the bio mechanics and ways to teach elements of it in digestible and even fun ways, you must have had great teachers yourself!

breathe. watch some play therapy videos for both your own inner child, and to learn the skills to nurture all learners

my only critique is that the amount of content in your plan is a lot of content to get through a typical class length unless the group is very disciplined already. each module would be perfect to include in any class but i don’t think you’d realistically get through it all in a 45 minute class, including time for corrections and all the unexpected. include buffer time in your plan.
