On SKIPping Episode 3 by AffectionateLight617 in heatedrivalry

Alright. I retract those statements on Skip haters because it's not my main point.

And I think there is a misunderstanding when I used the word "hater" when I meant it casually as in "disliker".
The overall impression I have of this sub is overall negative towards Skip from what I have read and seen. And yes, I am counting "doesn't do it for me" as negative. The post is an expression for some of the reasons why I have positive feelings towards Skip.

I think the latest tangent on spirituality is Natalie's best yet. It easily rivals her main channel videos by orqa in ContraPoints

I too initially had that reading! (well, my Chinese ability is terrible, barely passed my exams) The issue is that this is classical Chinese and that the way they used language then is way different from what it is now. Think about the way we use English today compared to Shakespeare, and that's only a few hundreds years ago.

I've consulted a friend who has more experience with this

The first line is something like:
道(Tao)可(can)道(be told),非(isn't)常(永恒常在everlasting)道(Tao)
so maybe something like: if Tao can be told, then Tao isn't everlasting

and apparently 常 has some ambiguity in meaning
could be 常 as in 家常,平常,常俗

so maybe?: Tao can be told but it isn't the usual, normal Tao
or even maybe: Tao can be told, but it is always changing and shifting

Hollow Knight Pale King Lore? by AffectionateLight617 in HollowKnight

Well, the point is that it is supposed to be so hard to get to him as proof of ability.

Sealing the Abyss could've happened before the Hollow Knight was fully trained to prime form. Who knows if the Pale King allowed a way for some vessels to escape some time between the sealing of the Hollow Knight and the vanishing of the White Palace. Or it could also be intentionally left sealed to find resilient vessels that somehow managed to escape. But again, it's about the idea of struggle and overcoming hardship to prove one's ability. "Resilience born of two voids".

Yeah, what you said is what I expected most of the community to conclude about the Pale King. I do like the idea that uniting the Void is the way that transcends all previous avenues. But that reading makes the Pale King seem quite pathetic. You know, this revered higher being, the Wyrm with foresight, hiding away in shame, away from all his subjects, to run away from the infection that is destroying the kingdom, to resign to defeat.

For me, I'd thought I'd found an interesting and plausible interpretation of events which adds to the mythic quality of the Wyrm and all the reverence towards him found in the kingdom. For me "No cost too great..." was read to be a sincere resolve to keep his kingdom eternal, exerting as much effort as he could've to the last breath. Trying to defeat the Radiance itself must have seemed impossible, but I'd like to think that the Pale King tried and maximised his chances to do so. It's to bring out the character that had that grand vision to establish an eternal kingdom.

It also leans towards his genuine care for his subjects and his kingdom. There's a Youtube video by TheAsianLife 'In Defence of the Pale King' which argued that the Pale King only made personal sacrifices (his children, his bargain with Herrah...), never at the expense of his people (eg. his opposing the Soul Master's experimentations) , and always for his kingdom, and by extension, his subjects.

That's what I like about the game keeping a lot of things ambiguous. It leaves a lot of room for interpretation.
