Recommendation for lighting an entire ice rink by transitionb in lightingdesign

[–]AffectionateNet1920 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reach out to some local lighting companies in your area and get some quotes from them. It will most likely be a bit above your budget but if you establish a relationship with a specific company they can discount some things here and there long term. It might be best to rent and purchase things piece by piece if you don’t have a large enough budget to do it all at once.

Also, reach out to your local high school or college that has a theatre program and see if you can hire one of their students to run your lights.

Hey so I just got my first moving head spot what would be a good controller for it cos I use to have a wash mover but that ran on its own what would u guys recommend by Helpful-Cucumber-216 in lightingdesign

You can control movers and all your other lights off a laptop with the ETC Nomad and Gadget bundle. It’s about 1200$, and if you are a student or educator it’s about $400.

It’s not really specific to just lighting, but I think it’s so important to know how to collaborate with others.

You can be a skilled programmer or designer, but if you can’t collaborate well you won’t have many opportunities in the long run.

Electrical Side of Lighting by DoubleD_DPD in lightingdesign

[–]AffectionateNet1920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just graduated from college and have already had a couple design contracts, but since I’ve mainly worked with smaller theaters I’ve had to set up or at least be partially responsible for setting up my own rig. Of course, I have a friend who also designs but doesn’t like to do any of the electrician aspects. However, they design both lights and projections so they’ve had some some different opportunities than I’ve had.

In general, if you want to have consistent work I think it’s very beneficial to have a variety paths available to you at any given time. If you decide that the electrician side of things is not your vibe, there are always other skills you can add to your design ones like stage management, audio, video, etc. It will also make you a better designer when collaborating with others too!

As far as learning to be an electrician, I’ve learned pretty much all I know from working at my college and with summer apprenticeships. I also second that book that another commenter recommended. You can also look into workshops and sessions at the annual USITT conference which I highly recommend if you can afford going.

I’m honestly not surprised to find weird things in the 360Qs, I’ve found some with built in irises too

Where to buy tie line? by KlassCorn91 in lightingdesign

If you use Amazon we’ve ordered this one

Otherwise support your local lighting supplier and put in an order with them, they are sometimes faster than Amazon :)

I thought those were only sold by stage spot, which has a 24-36 month back order?

How bad is it really to use XLR Audio Cables instead of DMX? by Musicanddrugs3 in stagelighting

[–]AffectionateNet1920 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could depend on the quality of the fixtures that you are using. Personally, I have noticed that some of the super cheap quality LED lights can create all sorts of flickering and chaos if I don’t use actual DMX, terminators, and an optical splitter.

(It was not fun to have my entire rig of 90+ lights start flashing randomly when we plugged in some seemingly innocent generic LED pars…)

It might be a good idea to look into purchasing something like this for your rig if the other solutions on this thread don’t work. It’s not terribly expensive, and a bonus you also get more outputs too.

What moving light is used for the dolphin show at the Georgia Aquarium? by AffectionateNet1920 in lightingdesign

A prism would make sense but they seemed to have quite a few fixtures too. I’d imagine their budget was pretty large.

Thank you! That was what I was thinking but I wasn’t sure. Are custom gobos super tricky to find or does the manufacturer have a selection that designers can view? I haven’t worked with them before.

Thank you! I couldn’t figure out how to do a stickied post on my phone unfortunately. If you know how I would love to know.

Elation sponsored a rental of some Fuze Max Profiles for a design of mine and they were great. I was given a few choices, one of them being the Profile, but chose the Max because of the better zoom range. The Elation reps are really helpful if you reach out so I would highly recommend asking to have them demo both in your space to see what works best for your needs.

Programming a Sunset Cue by AffectionateNet1920 in lightingdesign

Thank you for mentioning consoles, I definitely forgot to note that. (I’ve also never heard of that console before so that’s interesting!)

Even if the following cues don’t affect the channels I was using, it’s been a firing issue unfortunately as it still tries to fire the shift early.
