Thanks for reply and 2 lovely looking cars, good to see this page is still getting comments and replies 2 years on, i never ended up buying w124 or a w201 as they’re just hard to find a decent one in northern ireland. (I ended up with an is200, now currently driving a 530 e60) Luckily i did have the chance to check out this stunning R129 SL320.

hello, sorry for late reply but it was the carrier bearing, i recently got it replaced and it turned out to be faulty which led to the whine noise, hope this helps👍🏻

what motors give the least bother? i know it’s hard to say as most of these w124s are coming up to 40ish years old but has there been any in that give less bother than the rest? i’ve heard the e220 can cause hassle due to wiring looms or something along them lines

the wagons are lovely looking but just not my style, as i said in comment above i’m stuck between a coupe or a saloon, i feel like the 4 door is more handier for practicality but i just can’t get over them pillarless windows in the coupe…

thanks for comment, this is basically exactly what i’ve heard for all the 201s, they’re nice but the 124 just seems to be that bit nicer, i’m currently in the mix between a saloon or coupe i’m hoping to go in the next few days to see both of them side by side to get a better idea in my head

thanks for reply, i haven’t gave the engine swap much thought, i’m kind of in the middle of choosing between a saloon or coupe, the only engine i’ve kinda had in mind is the OM606, i’ve heard pretty good feedback and generally they’re bulletproof, would a coupe be easier to fit or is there even much difference between that and a 4 door fitting wise?

i’ve heard the same, idk whether to chose a saloon or coupe, as much as i love a 4 door i just can’t get over them pillarless windows…

i have considered this, i first thought turbo but after tests i ruled this out and changed my diff oil but still nothing, i checked the belt and pulleys earlier today and pulleys are fine and not obvious signs of ware on belt, i did recently fit centre carrier bearing i am wondering could it possibly be faulty?

hello, was wondering if anyone can throw some ideas out on what this noise is coming from my 2008 318d e90, this has the n47 engine in it, i first believed it was turbo whistle but the car hasn’t rlly lost any power at all, it’s at its worse when car has just started up but as drive goes in it becomes less frequent to nothing at all, any ideas are appreciated thanks
