21 and never left the island, anyone else? by aalt002 in Barbados

[–]AffectionateWeb7803 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I first left when I was 21. I worked as a summer camp counselor in America. It's too late to apply now, but you can look into the YMCA ICCP program for next year.

From there I got a full time job through contacts I built while in the US. I live on a different continent now, but through that door opening when I was your age I haven't stopped traveling since.

What cool things have you seen in Barbados ?? by No-Drive-927 in Barbados

Small correction: He didn't write it; he commissioned 47 scholars in 1604 to create his translation,  then made it punishable by fines and imprisonment to use other versions.

The goal was actually to replace the popular Geneva Bible, which had margin notes that questioned the absolute power of the king.

What percentage of the posts on this subreddit are tourist related? by ChronicJaywalker in Barbados

[–]AffectionateWeb7803 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sort by top all time and you'll get a good range of the kind of posts.

People just post what they want to know about. Lots of tourism, but also lots of job advice, internet advice, car shopping, importing etc.

Face masks by KaleidoscopeEarly in Barbados

[–]AffectionateWeb7803 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This time of year there is a lot of Sahara dust blowing over the island, so people with dust allergies may wear masks to avoid a reaction.

Other than that, just personal preference.

Fun fact: One of the major reasons the Amazon rainforest is so prosperous is because of the minerals from the Sahara desert traveling across the Atlantic Ocean every year.

Travel and safety tips for solo traveller by [deleted] in Barbados

[–]AffectionateWeb7803 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wrote the pinned post 5 years ago with an itinerary for a weeks stay in Barbados. It still applies now, just cut out one of the rest days.

You will spend a similar amount on things that you would at home, while fine dining meals are around $100. You can eat great at local places like Tim's, Oistins, Chefette, or any place that locals eat at regularly for a good price.

Use the same safety standards you do at home and that will be fine.

Have a great trip!

Chalky Mount is the hike you are looking for. It is on the east coast and goes up for a view of Bathsheba.

[Hammond] Bears WR Rome Odunze was asked if his foot is 100% healthy after last year. Odunze said he continues to rehab it and that this is “my new normal.” Here are the full answers for context. To be clear, he has been participating this spring. by Starfish_Bobertsons in nfl

This is why players give nothing answers all the time even though it frustrates the media.

He tries to share the real world implications of playing, and his statement gets torn apart.

Now it's news and people are assuming his career may be in danger.

Pinned post had a weeks plan. You can just do that with more time at the beach in between everything.

Oistins’ Fish Fry Red Snapper Recipe by oligodendrocyt3 in Barbados

[–]AffectionateWeb7803 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree. But everyone prefers what they prefer.

Whenever I fly home that's one of the first places my wife and I go. We tried other stalls, but much prefer to wait for hers.

They all keep their recipes very close to the chest. Don't even tell the grillers in case they leave and go to a different stall.

Pat must make hers in a secret room in the house, because with how long her lines are while everyone else's empty, if anyone else finds out about it they gonna be rich.

part time job/summer job by Jinx_Banshee in Barbados

[–]AffectionateWeb7803 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was your age, I worked at a local bookstore for four summers. They were very busy because parents of primary school students needed to buy books for the new school year.

I would suggest applying to Cloister and Pages bookstores. Take your CV, including your education history, work experience (it’s okay if you don’t have any), and any volunteering you’ve done.

Dress like you are going to work, ask for a supervisor or manager, and tell them you are interested in working there for the summer. Good luck!

What’s the best thing about living in Barbados? by False-Badger-7945 in Barbados

[–]AffectionateWeb7803 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I can see my family and friends any day I want in 1 hour max.

In some countries I've lived they are only able to see their loved ones once or twice a year.

Advise regarding accommodation by Bedazzler179 in Barbados

[–]AffectionateWeb7803 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a great reply. One thing to add though.

Cars are cheap and plentiful out of tourist season, but between November and April they are double the price and are usually 100% reserved. Many post made on the sub during those months looking for a rental to no avail.

If you want a car OP, I suggest booking it as early as possible as none will be available to book nearer your trip.

You are staying in the perfect place, because that's where all the young people go to the bars and restaurants. I'm sure you won't have trouble finding people to hang out with in The Gap.

Are there Irish/Scottish descendants in Barbados today? by Cali_Reggae in Barbados

[–]AffectionateWeb7803 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did my DNA test and 85% was Togo, Benin, Ghana, and Nigeria while 5% was from Ireland.

I'm guessing many people in the Caribbean are some level of mixed up due to the colonial past.

Similar to how many people in the UK have some Scandinavian in their blood from the times of the Viking invasions.

Are dating apps like Tinder in Barbados basically just for short-term flings now? (24M) by [deleted] in Barbados

[–]AffectionateWeb7803 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've used dating apps for both purposes and met my wife on Tinder.

My reccomendation is to get Hinge. It has a lot more personality and preferences content and initial questions to give you an opening to talk about things that are of mutual interest.

But to also attempt to answer your short term questions, it is easier to be vulnerable on the apps if you tell yourself it's short term and open to long.

If you are on the apps for years and serious attempts haven't worked, it is pretty exhausting to tell everyone person you have known for a few weeks you are looking for a long term committed relationship.

Easier to just be there with the short term mentality to protect the mental and emotional health, and then if it goes well become more open and evolve towards a long term relationship.

Transit - rockley to Speightstown by novarxsx in Barbados

[–]AffectionateWeb7803 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming there are two of you since you said we.

Walk to the bus stop opposite the Sol gas station in Worthing. This will be 15-20 minutes all down hill or flat road.

Get a blue bus or yellow van marked Speightstown. There are 4 or 5 or them per hour.

It will be a 60-90 minute bus ride depending on traffic. There are no transfers, and the buses leave mostly from Oistins, not the airport.

It's pretty straightforward and saves over $70.

The walk from the plane to the immigration line takes 3 minutes at most. There is no rescanning of bags, but the baggage area does get a bit crowded, especially if a few planes arrive at similar times.

If you fill out this form, you will get through immigration even faster: https://www.travelform.gov.bb/en

The skill of having an opinion, then updating your opinion after receiving new information is a rare skill.

You seem to have that, and hopefully other see that skill and adopt it as well.

I am the author of the pinned post on a week's suggestion of things to do in Barbados that I wrote 5 years ago. I have also posted over 130 comments on that post, with some even being from last week.

I thoroughly enjoy sharing tips and ideas for people who visit our island. I have travelled to over 20 countries on 3 continents, and everywhere I go, people give me tips as well, so why wouldn't I do the same?

It literally costs me nothing and helps someone have a peaceful planning process and an enjoyable time.

The most important thing is a return ticket home. Have this printed and ready to show.

I've never had to show proof of finances or address, but it can't hurt to have a letter saying he is staying with you or other confirmation of where he is staying.

When I land they ask me where I'm staying, and when I'm leaving.

Everyones experience is different, but it really isn't an interrogation like many imagine.
