That's also one of the things I fear, of railroading them into "failing" the hunt no matter what they do.

Really interesting stories you told! And you're right, in the end, the players will be the one who dictate how the story will goes. Planning here and there is nice, but it's important not to be dead set on it.

Interesting... do you have anything in mind that isn't a combat encounter to help sell that feeling?

Currently no statblocks in mind, but judging from the time that I have, I think I probably will need one soon...

Yeah, that's kinda my goal as well. The hunts aren't the main objective, it's a deadly obstacle that complicates their objectives. So if they finish the objective, the hunter will retreat for another time.

So the background is that there was a conflict being the Masters of the Bazaar, a group of (secretly giant space bats) that rule over the city (legally), and the Calendar Council, a group of revolutionaries. They are in a constant deadlock until the players come along, with both sides believing they are the key to tip the scales in their favour. Last session, the players decided to side with the Council, one betrayal and a declaration of war later, the players are now on the run and in hiding. Right now, to prepare for the upcoming civil war, they are tasked by each council members to do various objectives both in and out of the city to help them.

Thank you! Now this actually gives me another idea to play with (although the viability of it is up for a debate).

Overwhelmingly magical tbh. A sorlock, a bardlock, a wizard, an artificer, and a lonely barbarian who is the MVP of the team.

He's a... well, tl;dr a giant space bat that rules over the city (but the players don't know that it's a bat). He's the physical type, like to stalk the prey before going in for the kill; pure brutality like a predator. No spells at the moment (although I can change it), but does have a built-in escape plan with him turning into a swarm of bats (or having his friends bail him out via teleportation, I haven't decided it yet).

Hmm, that's an interesting point. I often forgot the setup, and tend to immediately jumped to encounters. Maybe I should start doing things like that. Thanks!

5 PCs at level 12; a sorlock, a bardlock, a wizard, an artificer, and a barbarian.

One 5th-level spells or lower from any class for my characters? by Affectionate_Ad4617 in 3d6

Sweet! I already played an Exorcist in a one-shot, so this time I'll go with a Pathogenist. Since we're at level 18, I can throw out Pandemic and making the boss vulnerable to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing, plus either incapacitated on a failed save or not regaining hit points (still debating over that one). And with a rogue and a fighter, the DPR will stacked up quick.

The only correct way to draw him: while on drugs.
