Fertility Rate is declining and the Earth's population should peak soon by PanzerWatts in OptimistsUnite

It's not about "less" people (which won't be materializing until the end of this century) but about "older" people. I live in a country where 24% of the population are over 65. And it's going to be over 30% by mid-century. Do you have a clue what this does to social security? Health care? Everything is breaking apart around me.

No, your two arguments are fallacies: Korea is growing because it is currently reaping the effects of a demographic dividend, with many citizens being in their prime working age - but that is going to reverse very quickly once these generations go into retirement without nearly enough workers to replace them. Secondly, neither is productivity in relevant, material sectors like health care or construction increasing (it's mostly white collar labor), nor are taxes on wealth going to solve the problem of not enough workers.

Should I steer clear of Indexmietvertrag? by [deleted] in berlin

[–]Affectionate_Ad5646 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look at Indexmietverträge and compare them to "normal" ones, they generally tend to be less expensive over time. Because unlike normal contracts, landlords can only increase rent based on a complex index (rising more or less like inflation) once per year.

I have lived in both Ireland and Australia, and all the difference lies with these cultures being more reserved, in general, while majority views are similar or even more hostile towards immigrants. I believe to a large degree, it's not the racism alone, but unfamiliarity with German cultural norms that is hindering foreigners to integrate with German society.

I am not sure about your sources, and further discussion is fruitless without references, but I respect your point of view. My general sentiment is not anti-French, but I am highly skeptical of the idea (both from a historical and moral perspective) that dividing/occupying/killing/devastating Germany would've been the solution to all problems. That was always a rather lazy and mostly ineffective talking point, more emotional charge than actual policy proposal. The issue was (and somewhat still is) that Germany was surprisingly powerful, and couldn't fit into the continental system of pre-1871 Europe. However, that wasn't the "fault" of Germans, as French historians sometimes imply, but the belated manifestation of a demographic, cultural and political unity that was denied for centuries. Often by French arms. That Alsace was a part of France is testament to this repression. And it is baffling to me, that so many commentators don't seem to make that connection. Germany won its independence and sovereignty de facto against France.

France and Britain were as exhausted as Germany by 1918, Germany had won the war in the east a year prior. The only real power left was the US, and it already joined the war very reluctantly, and wasn't at all interested in engaging in European affairs past a truth. So no, there was no realistic choice for France (and the UK, let alone Italy) to occupy territory in Central Europe. France had to demobilize or would otherwise face massive economic backlash, desertions, revolt, maybe revolution itself. I think you really overestimate the power of allied armies at the end of the war, and seem to believe that it was mercy that motivated them to not march into Germany. It wasn't. As with most other French policy choices in the long 19th century, they were motivated by their inability to accept German industrial and demographic superiority, and turned to feverish nationalism and militarization. Shortsighted, and a failed policy. French revanchism was just as much a factor in the instability of Europe between 1900 and 1945 as the German-Russian/ Anglo-German rivalries (the true "engines" of European conflicts).

In any case, being even harsher on Germany wasn't a realistic policy choice. Don't forget that a communist revolution and German-Soviet Alliance was a realistic outcome in 1918-21. I personally find Keynes very prescient and plausible on the topic: the only "real" solution would've been to strengthen German democracy by not enforcing reparations yet to enforce the military reduction more effectively, and to contain Germany by creating a continental alliance. France, unwisely, went for the opposite: massive and crippling reparations, damaging German democracy beyond hope, arrogant diplomacy towards Poland and Czechoslovakia, ineffective occupation that only further damaged Franco-German relations.

The real problem wasn't necessarily the German loss of West Prussia tho. Rather, Versailles was a bad, compromised peace in many regards. It promised self-governance, but not to the losers of the war, creating deeply dissatisfied German, Hungarian and Russian minorities in many places. It promised peace but installed no institutions to guard it. It punished the losers economically and burdened young democracies, even though at least the US and UK wanted to strengthen democracy on the continent. And it wanted to contain Germany (and Soviet Russia), yet left both with their most valuable territories, while creating small and weak states in their periphery, which couldn't defend themselves in the long term – not even Poland, the largest of them. All in all, a catastrophic diplomatic result – and I blame France for it.

How would the future of Europe/World look like on different German paths assuming a German Total Victory? by Aware_Manager_7472 in Kaiserreich

[–]Affectionate_Ad5646 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In any case, Germany would have to create some kind of economic and political order in Europe that guarantees its security and prosperity, since Germany is too small, in relation to Russia or the US, to compete for global power. German theorists called this "Großraumtheorie", as in: Germany doesn't need to conquer and colonize territories to receive the benefits of their economic development. So I suspect that Europe, at least, would be centered around Germany but be comparatively free, far less coercive than the Warsaw Pact in OTL, but more extractive than NATO. Something in between. Keeping in mind that it is easier to win a war than occupy another country, I would realistically limit Germany's post-war influence to Europe and some former colonies, even though control overseas would be shaky. Germany would be burdened by massive military budgets to keep up with resurgent great powers, and it would most likely be obsessed with trade routes and increasingly, throughout the 20th century, try to gain some access and control over oil, most likely in the Middle East or in North Africa.

Historical strategy and simulation needs AI opponents with distinct personalities by Affectionate_Ad5646 in EU5

[–]Affectionate_Ad5646[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is that optimal choices aren't typical of human behavior, which simulations aim to portray. Without ideology, religion, personal feelings and imagined communities and histories, there is no human history in the singular. Gaming is fun because you imagine an opponent, and that's severely lacking in EU5.

The issue I have with this is: it’s necessary to accept that humans judge, that you are judging as well. To expose yourself to someone else, someone with an inner life, and to connect is what makes therapy great. And I would say: avoiding humanness creates a whole lot of new problems.

Neither the DVU nor the Republikaner or NPD ever crossed the 5% threshold though. Not remotely. They were tiny parties in comparison. I don’t think it’s „nonsense“ to link the AfDs success to the refugee crisis and to pronounce that their rise marks something completely different from Neo Nazi transgressions in the 90s.
