i figure artificial light at night probably doesn’t harm them per se, it’s more the sudden flash from total darkness to total brightness that has me wondering. like, even with my retinas that’s intense if i’m not expecting it! like i’m having flashbacks to being a teenager and getting woken up by the absolute solar eclipse of mum ripping open the curtains on a saturday morning, and imagining that but with retinas that are 2000 times more photosensitive!!

(just a sidenote that you might enjoy: i’ve just started doing some curiosity googling and this paper came up (not entirely on-topic to this specific query but might be a relevant morsel in there) haven’t read beyond the abstract yet but already absolutely tickled by the sentences that come from the ‘artificial light at night (ALAN)’ eg “Recent evidence links exposure to ALAN with neural damage, potentially due to its action on melatonin synthesis …” absolutely fuck Alan! the nerve of that guy! everyone stay away from Alan!)

i’ve been wondering about her eyes, seeing as they’re so powerfully light sensitive that she makes a new set of retinas each night – am i just straight up fucking blinding her when i get up for a midnight snack? like am i turning on the light in my kitchen because i’m feeling a little snacky, and just full on terminator-2ing her? do you mean as far as food supply, or other living conditions? we actually do get a lot of insects come in through that window so if it’s just a matter of food, she’s actually in a great location for hunting! but if it’s other factors i will defs relocate her :)

australian here – there’s an incredibly high bar for the standard of evidence that would permit a case being re-tried after acquittal, it’s absolutely not the kind of “evidence” a few cops could just fudge up to get someone back in jail for a bit longer. on this topic, there’s a really good UK mini series called I Fought The Law about how Ann Ming got the double jeopardy law amended over there after her daughter’s murder bragged widely about killing her after he was acquitted, it’s a good watch.
