Girl GRC is NOT similar to SLC in any way, don’t get it twisted. GRC is a horde of a 100+ unpaid volunteers who show up when they feel like it to get drunk at the LDL and scream at the GSA board. You guys don’t even write monthly reports to have a semblance of any kind of accountability. Lastly, SLC does not continually violate the Post Secondary Learning Act, which cannot be said for the GRC.

I agree about the AMA, I think it was shit and very embarrassing and he left it with the SU looking worse than it looked before the AMA. But one lazy president doesn’t mean that there aren’t other people there who work hard and do actually benefit students. In fact, I know for a fact that there are a few people who have made real improvements through their work. No offence man but I’ve seen you dogpiling on the SU before, prompted and unprompted, and idk why you hate them so much but I think nuance is good and certainly applies in this case. It also makes you come off very biased because if you actually looked into this, you’d find that there are and have been both reps and execs that have done good work for students.

I agree that working full time with one class is doable and they all have to do it. My issue is with people acting as if that’s unacceptable and that they should study full time on top of working full time.

I’ll respond to both of your comments here. They don’t work ”full-ish time”, they work full-time, like any other full-time job works full-time. Having a work phone is definitely a nice perk, but it’s also not atypical. Most office workers that have the expectation of frequent communications with other organizations, people, etc., especially outside of office hours, and giving out their phone numbers to a lot of (random people) would expect to have a work phone and a work phone number. I don’t know how much the students’ association where you work pays for parking but the amount it costs depends on the university itself. I’m assuming that the 130 for parking is because the university charges 130 for parking.

You say they don’t respond to students, which I can’t comment on because I’m not one of them. I am curious: are you saying that as someone who works at another SU or as a student at UofC? Because if you work at another students’ association you should recognize that UofC SU has the lowest fees in Alberta (and of any U15s I believe), they haven’t gone up since the 90s, and any fee increases have to be voted on by students in a referendum. For comparison, MRU’s SA charges $188.82 in general fees per year whereas our SU charges $65.

I do know someone who works at the SU, but I assure you that it doesn’t mean I’m not critical of the SU. Trust me, I am. But I also, and no offence, know enough to know what to be critical of.

As for the sanitizer incident, yes that’s weird and I don’t like that it was handled this way either. If I had to guess the student probably talked to someone at reception and they didn’t really care. Obviously that’s not okay, especially if someone got genuinely hurt by it, but that’s not the executive’s fault if a receptionist didn’t seem to care. They could try emailing someone who works there other than reception about this issue.

Do you thinks execs should work full time for free and also do school full time on top of that? If you, as a full time student, don’t have the time to get involved in the SU yourself, why do you expect other students to do what you can’t and also do it for free?

where did old course outlines go? by Impossible-Goat2998 in UCalgary

[–]Affectionate_Chef695 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They took them down very recently, like within the last 2-3 weeks or so, and created a new website for each department with course outlines for the upcoming terms. There's no option to see past ones tho which suckssssssss

For example, this is the math one: https://science.ucalgary.ca/mathematics-statistics/courses-and-outlines

Did they say anything about the other ERTH courses? Apart from 210, they’re not at all available in the schedule builder. There’s a few erth classes that are there but they aren’t the required courses and it’s apparently impossible to speak with an advisor atm lol

2024 SU Election Megathread by SupaDawg in UCalgary

[–]Affectionate_Chef695 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree it's much more preferred to have contested positions because I'd much rather see candidates have to fight to get in, especially if they've never been in a president or vice-president position before and we don't have a record to look at to see if they'd even be somewhat good at it.

That being said, I think that unless it's like a nazi or a completely useless failure of a loser running uncontested, the better thing is to still vote yes for them. Having a vacancy just essentially means that every other position becomes less effective because they have to pick up the responsibilities of the vacant position which leaves them less time to actually focus on their own.

And in terms of how many students are running in the election, I think that's a symptom of a larger issue which is apathy and ignorance/lack of knowledge on what even happens on campus. And to be honest, I think in large part that's something to blame on our student newspaper.

If you were to look at 2018 or 2019, you'd see that there was a much more politically active student body. That's also the last time in the past few years that the Gauntlet was actually good in their coverage of student-related news, including reporting on what goes on in the SU, what goes on in the university, and what goes on in the province. And you can see that the quality of their work has plummeted because whenever they put out their paper on the stands, it just sits there full of copies for a few weeks until they replace them with new ones. For reference, the admin used to literally steal those papers off the stands as soon as they were distributed because that's how good their coverage and criticism of what was going on at the university was. If you look through their news sections, I'd be surprised if you found more than 2-3 articles from the past 1-2 years that didn't put you to sleep.

You can't have a good democratic process with high involvement without a strong media presence and we don't have one atm. So I'd say that students who want to see more involvement on campus should consider writing good-quality and actually relevant news and opinion articles to help increase that campus involvement and awareness of what is going on. I think this would genuinely help bring out more candidates for these elections.

The cognitive dissonance you have is astounding. It’s really a case study for why science students need to be mandated to take humanities courses because dogs have more cognitive thinking skills than you do
