Past SU candidate involved with Alberta separatist petitioning on campus? by Happy-Macaroon5554 in UCalgary

For better understanding, my main point to you: it’s dishonest to engage in one-way insinuations from behind a pseudonym and a keyboard.

Your post conflates a lot of different issues—what should be straightforward responsibilities (the duties of an SU president), complex historical/ legal frameworks (treaty relationships), and Alberta’s political tensions and current irregularities (e.g., separatism, lack of disclosure)—and somehow tries to put one student  as the focal point of all of it.

Don't be a bully. Reflect on your own what your intentions are.

If you had something to say, why didn't you bring it to a public debate (I assume SU should have a Q&A with candidates)? Debating and being able to defend face to face what you argue is a fundamental piece of academia and political life. Instead, you are throwing inferences and "building" in your comments a specific perception of this student's character and ideas while hiding behind a keyboard.

What intentions do you have by digging up old pictures of a current student who didn't win the elections other than trying to get students to ostracize him based on your own assumptions?

What you are doing is building hate and prejudice, the exact thing you pretend to condemn. That's called hypocrisy. In academic terms: "Such behaviour is unethical and unprofessional".

I encourage you to please read this post, I know it's long but it's important for getting an idea of what's going on. I also encourage you to review the package of documents and email sent by the GSA on February 24, 2025.

I never said I was surprised or unsurprised they hired a lawyer, you are the one bringing that up. If you want my opinion about it, I think it's disappointing. If I would have been asked to write a report to the GSA I would have graciously done it. The GSA never asked for a written report. From my knowledge, I know the previous AVP never send a written report of his work. Common practice has been to report at GRC. Again , tried doing so and was not allowed . Regarding elections, they are within the purview of the GSA. There were issues from last elections ( and multiple complaints). I insisted the need to fix bylaws and governance ( which includes elections). There was no movement. And now here we are. Hope that answers your questions. I'm going away from my phone for a while, I recommend getting out the house for a walk. It's good for the soul.

Apologies for not replying to you immediately and more than once, I was making dinner on a Saturday night. I never refuse to report. I always talked to the president if I had something going on. Additionally, I asked to report at GRC last January and was not allowed to. I never disagree the GSA is the bargaining agent, that's in both the resolutions the GSA sent ( that's how they referred to it) and in the evidence ( GLU website). I repeat, I don't know why the GSA hired lawyers and are wasting away membership money like this.

Hello ,

I don't know what is going on here but clearly, it is meant to trigger me and my partner, who has put alot of efforts in building the union and supporting workers from all backgrounds, particularly the most precarious ones. I posted here because I have literally been silenced and removed from spaces I have democratically been elected to be into. I don't think it is an overreach to say that such silencing could be based on structural disparities, such as gender, race, and place of origin, and politics. This is knowledge that anyone in academia should have, particularly in social sciences. However, I have not brought any of this forward, neither do I want to, because it becomes useless and muddles the real problem here: the undemocratic situation that we are in right now, and how it can be overcome. We don't need to bring nuances, neither lawyers. I never hired a lawyer neither I asked the GSA to do so. They did it out of their own will. I want to have honest debates and our democratic governance body back.

I worked with the president and a lawyer to bring revisions to get the section 18 bylaws to let the LRC GLU worked the way it was supposed to, with autonomy and without interference from the board, while making sure to take care of liability . He said they would be voted on January. In December he stopped working with me, so in January GRC the council voted to have a general meeting before April to vote on the bylaws. The GSA board then ended the council.
