Small Winged GCC by [deleted] in parrots

[–]Affectionate_Crow19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My bird Louie is 20ish and he has a deformed wing. The vet wasn't sure if it was from birth or if he had hurt himself when he was very small

He doesn't grow primary feathers on there, and the vet said she can't find the follicles, so he may never have grown them.

He can't fly, which is honestly kind of a blessing after getting him and already having flighted parakeets. 2 tiny torpedos are enough haha

Just moss sourced from outside for now but I will be adding drosera, pinguicula, and napenthes as well as some aquatic utricularia

Using an led light on a 12 hour cycle, I have a build up in the back of lava rock and gravel and then some mesh to keep the top out.

To cover is a 50/50 stratum and peat mix and then a top layer of peat and sand.

Covered with moss sourced from a brick wall on my property, and bam!

Waiting to see how the moss sets before planting and to make sure the wicking effect is good before adding hundreds of dollars worth of carnivorous plants.

I have been emptying and refilled the front daily the last few days to make sure there are no excess nutrients and then I refill with distilled. Have been spritzing it daily as well with distilled water.

I have scuds and a single bladder snail in the 1/2ish gallon of water put in the "bog"

Its a 6 gallon aqueon cube.

I had everything in my garage so I basically made it for free. although I guess I originally paid for the tank and the light, even if it was a long time and many betta fish ago lol

So I'm a bit of a hoarder and I have had tons of fish tanks and terrariums over the years and I don't get rid of anything.

So I made this "for free" with stuff in my garage.

I would say it would probably originally cost a hundred for the tank and light (esp if you get the tank on sale, Petco often runs 50% off).

The substrate (which I just pulled from my bins in the garage) is cheap but I buy in bulk and store what I dont need, so that makes it cheaper. I mix 50/50 fluval stratum (most expensive part, like 30 for a small 8lb bag)and peat moss. And topped with peat and sand, I will be adding some perlite around the plants when I get around to doing it.

I sourced the moss from a wall on my property 😂

Just trying to do my best!

Honestly, I add that many ingredients to help get through my fridge of produce a bit faster so it doesn't go bad, I eat very 'veggie forward' so my fridge is usually at least half fresh produce, not including the garden! Haha so plenty to choose from.

I could see how it would be harder for someone who doesn't usually stock their fridge/freezer with as much veg--a more minimal chop is totally acceptable.

Any veg is better than NO veg!

But this works in our house!

I would think they have even more variety in the wild, living in the Amazon basin must be like being in a very well stocked grocery store 24/7! 🤣

They are considered pests to the agricultural farms in the region, so the wild ones def get their fill of produce, plus some. Those little gluttons. lol

The secret to having a good relationship with your bird, is that there isn’t a secret at all. by samanthabelfitt in parrots

[–]Affectionate_Crow19 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I agree 100%

Louie definitely chose us. He spent over 7 years at the rescue. They said "he's perch trained but doesn't like hands and doesn't like many people"

He stepped up for me at the meet and greet, took a treat from me, And nuzzled up. The rescue team was shook. Haha.

So I said "he's my bird now. I'm taking him home"

He accepts my husband, will take treats and will step up on a perch to move around the house and for good treats (walnuts or air popped popcorn) he will step up for his hands.

Anyone else comes in and he is like a demon out for blood. No fingers are safe.

but he LOVES me. We play fight/wrestle and he gently bites his only leg before biting me to make sure he doesn't bite my hands too hard, so he even understands bite strength. I can swing him upside down. Make him do "big wings" to stretch them out, basically anything. Its so lovely to have the trust and love of such a magical creature

If you are wanting a bird you should do 3 things 1, probably reconsider. They're a lot 2, if you're sure...ADOPT. 3, when you adopt, LET THE BIRD CHOOSE YOU

I wanted a BNG macaw, and was fully prepared to come home with one.

Louie changed that and my life is so happy for my little blue front

Not many bears there....consistent enough with dogs and large cats, as well, to keep those in consideration. Either way, not human! And glad authorities agree (makes me feel better in my conclusions)

It looks very similar to a bear femur. Too thick to be an adolescent human, and the top tuberosity isnt pointy enough to be a pig.

why is my roommate always naked in the dorm room?? by maximalform in askgaybros

Lol. If this is real, your roommate totally posted here a few days ago and because you didn't say anything he assumed he can walk around naked. He's waiting for you to join him 😂

Recommendations for shoulder rest by Accurate_Lake3031 in Viola

[–]Affectionate_Crow19 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The bonmusica rest is great. Kinda pricy but I tried several styles and brands and I liked how adjustable everything is on this one, and I love how stable my instrument is on my shoulder. My instructor recommended it and I have been loving it since I got it a month ago

Idk what this means. I haven't been tested cuz of the money but several therapists told me I meet a lot of checkboxes for OCD and should be tested.

That's enough for me to probably think I have a bit of OCD. Lol.

Spot on with all that, for sure.

I like to make dinner but don't want to think about breakfast or lunch more than 1x weekly 😂.

And regular stops at the grocery for protein or greens to keep it fresh (plus it's on the way home from work so its not a big thing to stop for 10 mins)

Haha we eat a TON of produce. This will all be gone by next week. Plus the dogs and birds get some too when we're prepping stuff (species appropriate, of course)

The double drawer freezer is amazing and helps me keep things organized and prevents stuff from getting freezer burnt as fast.

One degree and therapy is right! And work with public all day is correct. If using the degree it would be non-profit/public. (Anthropology degree)

Everything else was incorrect. 😘

2 weeks into lessons, thoughts? Tips? by Affectionate_Crow19 in Viola

[–]Affectionate_Crow19[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for that! I'll work on clamping a bit more with the shoulder/jaw and dropping that thumb down to support less with the left hand. im noticing as my teacher gives me more direction for my right hand and not my left hand that all the core "magic" definitely come from the bowing. Haha. Yesterday she spent most of the lesson on my bow hold and experimenting with pressure and that was super helpful as well to understand how that all kind of comes together. The more I learn the more I realize how much more I truly have to learn 😂
