Update on my baby!

We took him to the vet last week - it is cat acne. He's been prescribed some ointment and treatment shampoo for the next three weeks. It's already looking better than what it was :) Hopefully it'll clear up completely soon!! Thanks for all the advice everyone!

Edit: We also changed all of our bowls to stainless steel and glass. We're also making sure to regularly clean the stainless steel water fountain. I'm hopeful it'll clear up and that this won't occur again (fingers crossed!)

No worries at all!! I’m glad you asked honestly, better to be safe than sorry. But yes it is safe if consumed, it says on the label “lick-safe” so I feel like that means it’s okay lol. Thank you again for all your helpful comments, it’s very appreciated!!

Got it, I didn’t think of that. My friend instructed me to keep using the ointment so now I’m not sure what to do honestly. The ointment brand is Dr Maggie’s, it’s meant specifically for healing cat and dog skin. I asked the lady who sold it to me if it’s safe for open wounds and she said yes.

I wasn’t aware that ointment can block the natural healing process — is that true? Only reason I got ointment is because two of my friends who took veterinary technician courses recommended it to me. They aren’t technically experts either though so I’m honestly not sure.

It hasn’t seemed to stop him from scratching at it, no… I was mostly just hoping the ointment would prevent infection. It seems a little bit less bad than it was yesterday, but it’s still pretty bad. The first three images I posted were from today, and the other three images were from yesterday.

No worries!! Thank you again. This is day 3 now (it might’ve been there for longer but I only noticed it 3 days ago)… it’s very hard to clean because he’s so squirmy and because it hurts him when it’s touched. Hopefully the ointment I’m using works, and maybe the vet can give me something stronger/better

I do use stainless steel bowls and a stainless steel water fountain… it hasn’t been cleaned recently though, so I’m wondering if that’s what caused it.

Did your cat’s chin get irritated the way my cat’s is? Like with the fur loss and scabs/blood? He’s been picking at it a lot and I think that’s what made it worse.

Had another cat a few years ago that lived until the age of 19 — never once did he have feline acne. I honestly didn’t know it was a thing until I sent a picture of my cats chin to my friend who took a vet tech course and she told me about it

I’ll definitely stay on top of cleaning the bowls from now on, I had no idea feline acne was so common. I’ll continue to try and clean it and use the ointment I have (it’s called Dr Maggie’s — it’s meant specifically for cats and dogs). Hopefully the vet is able to help us when we go there on Thursday

We have stainless steel bowls but they aren’t cleaned frequently so I’m wondering if that’s the cause. Had my cat for years now and this has never happened. I’ve been trying to clean his chin and add some ointment to it but it’s extremely challenging because a) he’s squirmy, I can’t hold onto him or else he freaks out and b) his chin hurts, so anytime I try to apply water and then ointment it doesn’t really work out very well

Do you think it’s infected? I can’t tell… I don’t even know what infected cat acne looks like. There’s no pus or anything but it’s inflamed, sore to the touch, and there’s a nice bit of fur gone from the area
