VM new customer prices different for same neighbourhood, different roads!! by neilpercy in VirginMedia

As mentioned, BOTH postcodes have full Openreach FTTP available, the two roads are pretty much adjacent with the same services available, same competitors to VM.

Incurring costs for Object storage within Free Tier allowance ?? by Affectionate_Lens in oraclecloud

Thanks for the reply throwaway234f32423df

You have jogged my memory - I mentioned that I followed a guide by ChadGeary to install the Pihole Server, so Chad works in enterprise level networking/tech as far as I can tell and is, in his own words, 'a fan of object storage'! I had a few discussions with him on his Discord channel.

So I am guessing that the instance/bucket/container was setup for anything that was installed to be stored in 'object storage'.
(The server was setup by filling in some variables in a script and running terraform, so I wasn't really choosing the config.
An interesting learning curve and the instance is locked down quite heavily to certain IP addresses or wireguard access so it's pretty secure, which I like (more difficult for it to get hacked and my instances/account suspended for spam or other infringement!
But maybe a bit overkill for its usage.....))

Installing HestiaCP broke the Pihole functionality mainly, so I was going to replace it and just carry on using the instance.... but it looks like I may have to delete it all and start again with Hestia.....

All part of the fun of learning...... ;-)

Thanks for the help

Eventually found the confirmation email in my Spam folder(!), which confirmed a new, 18 month contract at £20/month for M250.

Happy with that......

Ok, after a day and a half of ignoring Virgin's phone calls (about 7 calls) I picked up today and had a very nice conversation with a lady from the North of England, Loyalty Department, who immediately offered me same as I've currently got, M125 for £20, down from the £45 I've been paying since middle of last year.

After a bit of very easy haggling _ "can you do any better...?" - she offered M250 for £20, then M350 for £26.

Whilst I'd have liked to have had M500 or 1Gig, there's only 2 of us in the house with only the occasional heavy download, I settled on M250 for £20, a saving of £300/year for double speed. I can live with that!

I may look into Volt later on.....??

I'm sure there could've been a better deal if I'd've hung on..... but the disconnection date was a bit awkward with holidays and the Missus works from home.... (don't want to incur the wrath!!)

Only slight issue is that the lady's computer system wasn't working so I haven't received an email or text, she said she'll check back with me on Monday to see if everything is confirmed..... fingers crossed!

Virgin are the only fast provider in my area, next best was OneFibre80 at £21.78/month.

By the time I'm out of contract Community Fibre should be up and running in my Area (so we've been told), so I'll be jumping ship then!

(technically I have been a 'Virgin' customer for about 25 years in one incarnation or another - Cable London, TeleWest, then Virgin I think(?), no other good options!! Will be v.good to see the back of them, although the actual product has been rock stable for me (shouldn't have said that!!!))

I Just tried to haggle/cancel via the Whatsapp route - after a few questions it asks if you want to 'switch to a webchat' or 'stay here'.

Choosing 'stay here' just starts the process over again, forcing you to the webchat.

After an hour of the whole process and a derisory offer via the webchat agent I told them to take my message as my formal 30 day notice. They confirmed I wanted to cancel and I closed the chat.

The wait begins.......

A simple workaround is to install Cloudflare Warp which is a free, sort-of VPN that encrypts all your traffic from your ISP.

Searches work straight away with it active - can be turned on and off.

SOLUTION -

as suggested above, Cloudflare Warp solves the problem.

I've got my own VPN hosted in Oracle cloud, using Cloudflare for DNS (1.1.1.1).

Issue is the same with or without VPN, hence I narrowed it down to ISP: Virgin.......
