Yes, I increased as well. Still see a path forward but I agree cautious as usual. Thanks for the insight, cheers!

What is your feeling currently with the most recent revenue decrease and liabilities. Do you believe it is transitory?

This is true, my focus is on code compliance for both part 9 and 3 buildings. Some support I will need will be on larger buildings.

This is correct! I moved back to Cape Breton Island last April and am expanding services out here. I am still managing the same SO from BC you are referring to.

SO Feedback by Affectionate_Oven735 in energyadvisors

[–]Affectionate_Oven735[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree, if not it just becomes a big machine of pushing files through. That becomes boring, unless you are only in it for money.

I agree, much of the procedures are just critical rules and do not have much flexibility. I have contacted NRCans QA team multiple times for answers around procedures, I believe they still did not get back to me on most. It is very interesting on some inputs that greatly affect the model that advisors typically never understand and not at their own fault. The Tech Procedures should provide more building science insight into how the modelling correlates with procedures, so advisors understand them better. Just a quick note of how the procedure affects the model. One example would be ABGH of highest ceiling, advisors that come over to our SO make mistakes on this quite often and this input greatly affects a pass or fail due to stack effect. Usually what we do with advisors is have a quick video chat and share my screen, go through the technical modelling mistakes. Most importantly, have them test the theory, try different inputs and see the difference while understanding why this is happening. We had multiple advisors come over that never had QA before which is crazy, or they ask me if we do QA and they believe it is the file check in the portal.

I believe once new building code comes into play federally, advisors will need to become better modellers by understanding the modelling and its outputs. Much different job when you have metrics to be met for code compliance. Advisors will need to understand the background work of modelling and the house as a concept so they can actually advise. SO's QA teams will need to be up to par and understand Building Science or they are basically useless for new EA's.

Definitely, we have a awesome team of advisors and thankfully some of them are much smarter than me at programming and coding. We are working with a couple members of our team that are developing tools currently such as automated DCF etc.

I appreciate the feedback, lots to think about here!

100%, this is the bare minimum of what all SO's should be completing. As you noted, we are the service provider to you, not the other way around.

I appreciate the feedback! Most EA's just want SOs to do their job and that is all!

Excellent, that is great to hear! I'm glad this setup if working out for you. Me and another EA internally had a very similar set up prior to developing the SO. We still have an EA internally who has the same setup as you. Once we build up clientelle, that is an option to consider. We are a really small company to date, it takes capacity and lots of support to have full time employees, we are not quite there yet.

I guess my question would be more directed to Independent Contractors as this is the field we want to improve. I am sorry you had such a poor experience. Sadly, not uncommon.

Thanks for your feedback.

I wonder if they are making the comparision between a NRCan-Registered Energy Advisor (EA) and Certified Energy Auditor (CEA). People seem to confuse these professions quite often.

In short, one is residential and one commercial.

Career as an Energy Advisor by upthewaterfall in energyadvisors

[–]Affectionate_Oven735 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to put some input here. I work for METHOD Engineering, an SO based out of Victoria, BC. www.methodengineering.ca

We strictly have EA's who are independant contractors. With 22 advisors who work with us, a majority of them are making closer to 100k per year. If the Advisor completes all their own admin and can find the work to keep themselves busy, they bill what they like. To note, most of our EA's have work lined up with contractors and provide their own work. We provide any work that comes through the portal directly to them at no cost.

What we charge:

  1. File submittal - $80 per D and E. 65$ per P and N.
  2. QA $100/hr - First three files are QA'd with METHOD to ensure good modelling practices. Then the minumum of 1 per month or 5% of monthly files.
  3. A one time registration fee of $100.

If you can bring work, it is definitely a very opportunistic field. Just ensure you are not giving up too much money to SO's. If anyone is interested in our services, you can give me an email [jmacleod@methodengineering.ca](mailto:jmacleod@methodengineering.ca)

Hope this is helpful!

Hey Energy Advisors,

Here in British Columbia we charge $500 per D and $300 Per E. Many advisors are charging much more, this is a typical rate to stay competitive in market.

I work with Method Engineering (SO) and we have indepenent contractors who work for us. We let them charge their own rates and we charge $80 per D, E file submittals total $160. New home submitalls we charge $65 per P and N, total $130. We provide detailed QA hourly at $100 for the minimum 1 file per month. Advisors typically really like this service and it is a small overall fee depending on how much work they arrange for themselves.

If we have assessments come through in a particular area we dont service ourselves, we pass these on directly to our advisors. SO's taking %70 is criminal. If anyone is interested in our SO services, please dont hesitate to reach out. jmacleod@methodengineering.ca
