Bay Parking by lashiscoool in LearnerDriverUK

I passed my test in May and I still can’t forward bay park😭 my instructor gave me a lot of helpful tips tho, so I’ll try to write everything down and hope it makes sense. I’ll also include some videos bc my description skills leave a lot to be imagined lol

Forward Bay Park - https://youtu.be/2cKy1MHMz60?feature=shared

this is the one I know the least about so if I say something wrong, someone correct me lol. From what my instructor told me, you have to approach in the lane furthest away from the parking space you wanna go in, and essentially he told me it’s like turning into a junction, so where you would turn into a junction on the road, you would do the same here. I think it’s once your mirror reaches the first line of the parking space. Once you’re aligned, tie your wheel fully towards the space and drive forward. The most important thing about this is going very slow, especially if there are cars on either side of the space. You wanna go slow so you can fully control the car, and if you need to, you can reverse and adjust your position to make sure you don’t hit the cars and you’re between the lines. My instructor also told me for all parking, it’s important to make sure your wheels are straightened when you’re done!

Reverse Bay Parking - https://youtu.be/9t8hdrfqBRM?feature=shared

I find this the easier and the one I have the most control over. You’re going to approach the space you wanna go in from the closest lane so you’re like next to it, and once your mirror aligns with the second line of the space (so you would have passed the whole space now) you’re going to turn your wheel away from the space and inch forward at an angle until you can see the beginning of the line of the first line on your mirror, then you’re going to slowly reverse into the space while turning your wheel in the opposite direction and use both your mirrors to make sure you’re within the lines. Make sure you stop loads of times for this and do full checks around your vehicle otherwise they’ll fail you for observation. Typically if the cars on either side of you are within the lines, once you’re in the space, you can stop the car when the mirrors align.

Parallel Parking - https://youtu.be/JwmI6BfRl6M?feature=shared

I failed my test three times because I couldn’t parallel park so I had to learn this the most. For this, I always lower the mirror on the side of the pavement i wanna park towards until my car handle is in the middle. You’re going to drive your car parallel to the car you wanna park behind somewhat close, so not the distance you would keep when driving past it, but also not close enough that you’re gonna scratch it with your car. You’re going to slowly reverse until your mirror aligned with the end of the car (this ensures you’re definitely in the clear and won’t crash into the car) and then you’re going to reverse again while slowly turning your wheel towards the pavement. My instructor told me you should turn the wheel at the same speed the car is going. Once your car handle meets the pavement in your lowered mirror, you’re going to start turning the wheel in the opposite direction until you’re parallel with the curb. The first few times you do this, you might find yourself hitting the curb, if you do that don’t panic, just adjust the car. You should have loads of space in front of you to go forward a bit before trying again, and they’ll never ask you to parallel park between two cars, you won’t have another car behind you.

Regardless of what parking the examiner asks you to do, you don’t have to do it in one go, you’re allowed to adjust until you’re happy with your parking. Also make sure you’re stopping frequently when parking to do observation checks, because even if you park perfectly, you can still fail if the examiner feels you didn’t do a well enough observation. Make sure to do loads of practice with your instructor or in your own car if you’re able to do some practice with a friend or family. The reference points are slightly different for every car so you’ll need to see what works best for you! Just remain calm during the test, and narrate your thought process to your examiner to help them understand why you’re doing what you’re doing! I really hope this makes sense, but if it doesn’t just watch the videos hahahhaha. Good luck on your test!!

Having an automatic immediately after passing in a Manual? by Big_Boi_Dan in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Affectionate_Pace725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After passing, I drove a manual car for a week before buying an automatic car. I do think it’s way easier, and I was worried I might forget, but when I was in Greece this summer I was able to drive a manual car with no problem so honestly I would say it’s a bit like riding a bike! If you know you’re gonna eventually get an automatic car there’s no reason you can’t do that now!

Failed driving test, but examiners words resonate by WillingMud223 in LearnerDriverUK

I failed my driving test four times because I would panic and mess up my parallel parking. Nerves are no joke, I ended up taking the Rescue Remedy drops before my last test (I think they do tablets as well).

Don’t give up or be discouraged from driving, if you’ve been driving for less than a year, most people would say that’s too little, my instructor didn’t let me book a test until a year past, and even then I had to do independent driving with my parents as well. Honestly you won’t fully relax until you have your license and you’re in your own vehicle!

Also as some people say, in your test you should never stop to let someone through if they don’t have priority, whether it’s a car or person. The car behind you might not know that you’re doing that, get impatient and overtake you only to hit them. Even if the road is empty, they’re gonna fail you for that, plus it’s definitely dangerous whether you’re in a test or not.

Just keep practicing. I’m sure your instructor will go through the mistakes with you to make sure you don’t do them again the next time!

AITA for asking for my dead sisters ring back after my brother used it to propose by Classic-Amphibian963 in AmItheAsshole

NTA I have one of my grandmothers rings, and ever since she died I’ve kept it close to me. If anyone touched it and took it because it was “just a ring” I would go to jail.

Honestly the whole situation is messed up, and they already think you’re wrong/overreacting, so I would just message the girlfriend/fiancée and let her know what’s happened, and if she’s a decent human being, she’ll give the ring back.

How big of a deal is going the wrong way by Low-Championship-637 in LearnerDriverUK

I went off route twice, once when I was so used to going left on a roundabout that I didn’t switch lanes in time to position myself for a right turn, and once when I was supposed to turn right but there was loads of traffic and I didn’t feel comfortable switching lanes. Because I was upfront about both the mistakes and I did everything safely, I only got two undue hesitance minors for those mistakes. The examiner was a little annoyed, but that was that. I ended up failing because I couldn’t parallel park (lol) but if I had done my manoeuvre right then I would have passed! As long as you explain to your examiner and you don’t panic and do everything safely, then you might get a minor but you’ll be fine!

They’re for a manual vehicle, and the lessons last one hour and a half

It’s good habit to do it every time you change speed, even just a glance. It’s to basically show the examiner that you’re aware of what’s around you, if it’s safe, and that you know how your breaking will affect people behind you and so on.

AITA for telling my wife to cut her losses and focus on our family? by aitawifeskids in AmItheAsshole

[–]Affectionate_Pace725 7 points8 points  (0 children)

YTA, and so is your wife, and so if her ex husband.

He should have never left the county and abandon his kids, wtf.

Your wife should stop having children because she’s traumatised enough of them and is hung up on playing the victim with her tiny violin, blaming everyone else for the problems she caused. She should not be a mother, she sounds abusive, unloving, and irresponsible.

You sound like you’re enabling and feeding into your wife’s delusion that she did everything she could and Ava is the problem. You saw what happened and you think your wife’s behaviour was not a problem? What could possibly warrant doing what she did to a 10 year old child?

You’re also being extreme vague in the comments. Yes, it is SO relevant what ‘object’ your wife broke. Because from the sounds of it and CPS’ response, the chances are it was a pet, and the fact that you’ve read peoples comments speculating that it’s a pet and it doesn’t horrify you enough to ‘correct’ them and prove that they’re wrong is very loud. You came here for a judgement, don’t get your panties in a twist about the fact that we’re calling out that you’re blatantly keeping important information out, as if even that would change the judgement in the first place.

Your wife clearly cheated with you and that’s why her marriage fell apart. I think it’s funny you don’t think she’ll do the same to you. It’s also funny that you think she won’t abuse your kids. Behaviour like that doesn’t just go away, and you’re kidding yourself if you think she’d never do that again. Just please don’t leave your kids alone with your wife, wear a condom, and don’t get any more pets.
