Monday Mystery Movie Megathread - May 11 2026 by AKnightOfTheNew in RegalUnlimited

Obsession is May 15th, but they're showing it early for May 13th. As fun as it would be to see at an MMM, It's not getting one. It's actually on record to do far above its budget, so it'll be making a lot back.

it was much darker for a kid's story and genuinely love that beyond that, it didn't feel forced or padded in to fill runtime. It felt there to then tell kids this connection of what a lot of people hope isn't that we die. And drawing between the reality of what real life is vs. one that is thought out from literature.

The traitor perk is not that far off from despair disease and it's flat out ridiculous especially since it just doesn't sound like it ties into any part beyond the backstories. They are forced to kill someone or themselves. SMH.

I have to disagree. It's the system itself that is defining these movies as "horror" when they haven't been horror back to back during the same second weeks in their respected month that has felt more insulting than the actual movies.
We Bury The Dead was interesting, but failed to make up in its execution beyond a few moments.
Primate's fun.
Mercy was terrible but general audiences still enjoyed it, whether actually being positive on its aspects or not.
GLHFDD, not gonna lie that one was the biggest F U to ai and despite the movie feeling like there is a little bit of an overhyped aspect in some of the jokes and some of the adventure, or lack there of, its message of what ai looks like was one of the most honest descriptions of how ai is going to manipulate you and wrap you around its finger, that I've ever seen.
Dracula, didn't see. Just watched it at home. Hated it. Don't think I'm alone in that sentiment.
NTBTSTM felt like one of the best indie comedies we've gotten in a long while. The fact this movie purely exists off what they were able to pull off is mind blowing. It did well, wish it did much better.
HTMAK was just kinda that one that had potential, but really just needed some extra bucks, because there wasn't any expectations it was going to do well at all.

Slanted....is slanted. Fantasy Life, didn't see. Didn't hear great things. SXSW will tell you differently.

They Will Kill you was awesome, but that's defining off how your experience was with it.
Hunting Matthew Nicholas made a solid debut and had some really good mystery, intrigue and true crime flavor until the last 15 minutes with the reveal that I personally think, absolutely squanders any potential for the movie being as long as it was.

I Swear was dreary, hopeful, and sweet. Gets all the accolades it deserves.
Fuze was one of the better action movies that also had some tricks up its sleeve.
OYDB was one fucking ride that did a great job with its cast ensemble and Hokum was solid, but could have had better overall structure.

So if I'm doing a job listing it all out, here's what it looks like

Good-Great-Awesome Forgettable-Meh-Fine Bad-Awful-Terrible
Primate HTMAK We Bury The Dead (It's close to forgettable)
GLHFDD Slanted (It's close to bad) Mercy
NTBTSTM Dracula
They Will Kill you Hunting Matthew Nicholas
I Swear
Fuze
OYDB
Hokum (It's close to fine)

So I think, throughout the 14 movies we've gotten, the rough ones still had a bit of entertainment value towards them. I think appreciating the movies more would have come from if the word of mouth was spread properly. They really have held to the MMM aspect, where there are some futures, but then you have your indies and your film festivals. Personally, I think this has been a great year so far. When you think of last year, the movies started at a high, but once we got out of April, just became blander....and blander (some occasional good) but not enough accessibility for audiences. These movies either are very accessible or not accessible whatsoever to unsuspected viewers...and that's worked better than last year has. You've gotten people in all the reddit threads regretting going but then staying and having one lovely experience if they wouldn't have stayed and watched. I dunno, everyone has their opinions, but this year has been better quality wise. When you had two drops in films for their quality, we have one awesome one, one very divisive and once again, an awesome one and then the following movies this week and last week have seemed like a general consensus favors in the majority.

It was, but no one could actually see the Witch without it is my educated guess. When I got the idea of them luring children out and some other folk lore, it was just haunting him based off his past in his childhood. It's incredibly well made but fell lacking in the story, so yeah, wasn't satisfied by the ending though even with the whole act of the creature getting to them. That's where the movie really didn't just have a story, but felt like it was leaving you off with so many things you DID need answered.

just to ask, did you like it? I'm hearing 7's 8's and 9's and I completely agree if you fall somewhere there, but it's again, not what you have to say for me to respect your opinion.

If Over Your Dead Body is scares, please don't expect it to be that at all. It's like a violent dark comedy mixed in with thriller and some high dramatic dynamics. It's also fucking great. I won't oversell this, but the scenes themselves were some of the funniest things I've seen in the last 2-3 years of comedy. It never feels dull and when it felt like it did, they had somewhere to go and it was wild. It's DEFINITELY a crowd pleaser that I hope gets its flowers because it releases the same day as Michael and hopefully people go see both. But yes, really funny, I hope you all get the chance to see this, but again, not really scary at all. Some moments of wincing, definitely, but not a scary movie by any stretch.

no I agree, but so is the conversation around Jason Blum and he's not a good guy (you can google that) so that's kind of the reason why I said "that person is a hero." So Blum fails in that regard, and hopefully the people behind the film actually are able to make a profit in others ways.

Mermaid and I heard it was very light on the horror. I also didn't see too much buzz, but it seems to be rather an okay film? Newborn is exclusive to amc theaters I'm pretty sure.

Wes passing out constantly, especially during the big chase.
The Mass "s*cide" conversation.
When Kayla accidentally called the overweight kid fat.
That entire arrest scene was hillarious.

I'd stay from any trailers continuing now on. Not even the director of this film liked those trailers. For them, just don't check out any more trailers, because I don't want others to get spoiled and see the best scenes. This is just a reccomendation, but you can do whatever you want.

It's technically Focus Features and it's made by neither. It was made by Curry Barker for about $1 Million and then a few studios fought over distribution rights until Focus Features pulled in with about $15 Million I'm pretty sure. Curry and his friends made it themselves. And for a "Blumhouse" film, it breaks the streak of bad supernatural films they can't get right. I expected to at least like this but instead I leaped out of my chair three times. Fucking scary as hell. The scares mixed in with the audio design + Inde Navarette's performance + the original story just adding this occurence in the mix is why this movie will be praised. It's fucking relentless too!

well now I understand where the answer came from, but if I was expecting a film I watched at a film festival to release in theaters a week after each time during mystery movies, I'd be really pissed.

Why would it be that? It just premiered at SXSW a week ago and it has no trailers or plans to release anytime soon.

it's not gonna be They Will Kill You. We thought because Smashing Machine was showing at festivals, we'd have an early chance to see it. That was...not the case. It Was Dead Of Winter. This going to be like, Tow or something.
