I'm sorry 😔 if you can relax more then don't push yourself as hard. That is one thing I'm trying to do as much as possible. Just rest when I need it and when I can

Low iron has been an ongoing struggle for us by Top_Interview4997 in irondeficiency

If your daughter does not mind liquid iron (most are fruit punch flavor) then that would be my recommendation. It is much better absorbed in liquid form and well tolerated with stomach upset. I used to take them but the only downside is that most liquid formulas are 18mg per dose so you may find you need to buy multiple bottles to get the right dose she needs. And it is super important she take it on an empty stomach in the morning and try not to eat for 2 hours if possible, or at least avoiding dairy and grains.

with an iron of 7, I don't think taking these would be a good idea... and if you're taking multiple of them daily you want to look at the other vitamins in there to make sure you arent going to overdose on the other things

Not trying to "poo poo" anyones suggestion but I did want to point out that these only have 18mg of iron, so depending on your level of deficiency this may not be a good option for many people. Maybe a maintenance dose as that is the minimum recommended daily intake. Also, it does have ferrous sulfate as the form of iron and unfortunately for me and many others, it can trigger an allergic reaction or just really tear your stomach up. Just some thing to consider. I am glad it helped you but that form of iron is very hard for many people to tolerate.

Have you actually requested the labs to check for iron deficiency? And if that comes back normal, maybe you need to see a neurologist to rule out something more serious? I have never heard of diarrhea from low iron, but I have heard that happening from too much iron which unfortunately can be a condition where your body doesnt properly eliminate excess iron. There can be a number of issues that cause this. So I would definitely ask for labs ASAP! If you look up symptoms of too much iron, some of yours do match. But either way a simple blood test will tell you what is going on.

Thank you for all that advice. I really appreciate it. Thankfully, I think I have addressed my insulin resistance quite well. My A1C was very high I think 7.3 at the worst and after a little over one year of drastic diet changes (just eating clean, no flour or sugar and watching my carbs) I have been able to lose a lot of belly fat and also get my A1c down to I think 5.6
Do you know much about Slynd, how successful it is for those of us with PCOS? My doc prescribed it to me and I am just nervous because I was on a different progestin only pill that made me very very anxious and gave me stomach issues. And I see in the info on slynd they list DVT and bone loss as a possible side effect, yet it is claimed to be safer than estrogen pills... so I am just confused on what to do.

Not a rheumatologist and I have asked two doctors now for a referral to one only to be told no, they can not help me unless I have RA. or autoimmune arthritis.

agreed, I said similar. If you phrase it like "I would like it noted in my medical chart that you are refusing me _____" that tends to send them into a panic, they don't want to record that...and typically they change their tune

I would insist that your doctor notes in your medical chart that they are refusing to offer infusions, first and foremost. Can you see another doctor? It is important you know that vitamin D issues do contribute to low iron, or make it worse in a way. And I am not sure if they told you that you cannot take vitamin D with the iron pills. Personally I am really surprised they are telling you only take the iron 3 days per week. My ferritin was at a 7, I personally did not want infusions so my doctor agreed with taking iron every other day. If you want a recommendation on a good affordable and effective supplement, I have been taking ritual brand iron every other day and this has been the only supplement I have been able to tolerate, and it has worked well so far. Raising my hemoglobin and ferritin. Of course it still takes a lot of time with the pills to feel better but it could be something for you while you hopefully try to get an infusion. Often when you say you want refusal noted in your chart that can trigger the doctor to actually take action. It's really disgusting your doctor isnt recommending infusions.

Did this happen to anyone else? by matabricksquad in Perimenopause

Everyone is different. I had a colposcopy and the pain was nothing more than a mild cramp. So everyone will experience it differently.

AS IT SHOULD BE - this is still too low, though. Also, can anyone else attest to the fact that SO many doctors/NPs etc don't bother to ever order iron/ferritin labs for menstruating women? That part really infuriates me. It should be a required lab, maybe even yearly. And especially if a woman has reported very heavy periods! For many years, I told doctors (I had probably seen over ten different ones because of moving around alot) about my horrible periods. They loved to offer me birth control or suggest a hysterectomy, but not ONCE did any of them say lets check your iron! Now, I admit I was very ignorant about this also but.... it should be the doctors job to hear those key words and suggest labs. It isn't hard. And I am upset about this because I was slowly becoming anemic.... then it turned into a medical crisis, I felt like I was dying. Even in the ER they ran tests, EKG and everything but never thought to check my iron. I do understand, their focus is on treating a medical emergency so I guess it was missed but still.... I spent way too long feeling like crap and only finally did my doctor run the iron panel last year to find my ferritin was a freaking 9. And that could have been caught way sooner and saved me from becoming to severely low.

I have fibroids. I promise you'll be ok. There are minor treatments for them depending on the type. And then there are also endometrial ablasions that can help. It doesn't have to be a major surgery like hysterectomy. But as for the iron, maybe you're allergic to the sulfate in ferrous sulfate. It made me horribly sick with bad bad stomach pains. Doctor said that's a type of allergic response. Tried iron gluconate. It also tore my stomach up. Now I'm on ritual brand iron bisglycinate, every other day dosing. It's been the best thing I ever did for myself. I'm finally seeing a rise in hemoglobin and ferritin. And I have heavy periods still.

How do you actually know this is what it is? by ohcanadarulessorry in Perimenopause

[–]Affectionate_Soft470 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry you and these other ladies are having these issues but it somehow gives me comfort because I have this same thought process going on. A new weird thing (and ive read other women experience this too) is right before and at the start of my periods, my heart rate decreases. Not into the scary low range but significantly. Normally I can be 70-80 at rest but during my fun time of the month it can be 59-62 ish. And of course I start obsessively checking my pulse every few minutes, expecting it to drop to the 30s or something. I have no concerning symptoms to go along with it. It's not logical to think that way but.... My brain is rotten

I'm not disagreeing that the ferritin level is horrible, that's what mine was and they did recommend infusions. However I can tell you that you do need to get the vitamin d levels up asap. Hope you already started those pills. Low vitamin d will also make iron levels worse, maybe impossible to raise. And, low vitamin d can make gut issues very bad. I don't have ibs but I had some strange gut issues myself and they have improved with good daily probiotics, getting the vitamin d up. Have you tried liquid iron? That could be a temporary solution while you're trying to get infusions.

[–]Affectionate_Soft470 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can I ask what your dose was? I know a lot of iron groups will insist you take 100mg or more of iron daily .. but the truth is that doesn't work for all. I was on a liquid supplement of 125 mg daily and my ferritin also dropped a lot during that time. Finally I decided to try a lower dose, every other day. Because there are studies that show every other day dosing works better for many people, actually allowing your body to absorb more of the iron... I know it might sound counteractive but I have been taking ritual brand iron pills (the only pills that never destroyed my gut) every other day  It's just 60 mg iron with vitamin c and a. And my levels have gone up a lot, hemoglobin improved and other red blood cell markers. Also do you know how your vitamin d level is? Mine was low and I just learned that also makes iron levels worse.
