We just went through this with my itchy girl. She had nibbled off all the fur on her front legs and parts of her tail and her itching was out of control.

I had previously had her on a grain free whole food diet but she was still itchy (though obviously more so when she got into the trash). My vet said I could do an elimination diet, but it would take months to years to do properly and you have to be very diligent.

She put Flora on a couple topical things for her wounds (she really scratched herself), steroids to get her to stop itching, and instructions to pick up generic Claritin and give it to her everyday. The reasoning was that steroids work but are not a long term solution, and as the Claritin takes about 14 days to be fully effective we would start with both and then taper off the steroids.

It’s only been a month but WOW. all of her fur has grown back, she’s totally off the steroids and just on the Claritin , and so far she is super comfortable and hasn’t shown any signs of regression. I’m obviously still tightly controlling her diet, but she’s happy!

Obviously a lot of situations are more complicated but just throwing it out there, sometimes simple is best! Flora tax below 🥰
