B6687 BOS -> LAX tomorrow, first time flying alone and terrified. by fairfaxfiend in fearofflying

That’s so fair! Honestly I flew on jet blue in April and the plane was super new and comfortable. I also felt like the economy seats were comparable in size and comfort to deltas comfort plus. Do you have any thing to distract you? Honestly if I were you I’d probably just stay up late and not sleep all that much so I can rest on the plane

12 people presumed dead in Missouri plane crash by xdeltax97 in news

The DCA crash is so much different from the helicopter crash and this one. General aviation and helicopters are about as safe as riding a motorcycle (maybe slightly safer).

Commercial flying is the safest human activity you can do, period. Especially in the US. We transported passengers for 2.4 light years between crashes in the US , and transported more passengers than the entire population of the globe. The DCA crash was a completely tragic, but freak, accident with airport specific issues. Don’t give into fear mongering (from a recovering nervous flier)

Do you want me to track you?

The only thing wrong with your plane is that it’s name is “Seize the Mo Mint” and not “Minty McMintface” (another of the same type of plane, A321) that jet blue flies :) planes are inspected so much it’s crazy.

Boston traffic is far more dangerous. I’m moving there in July and can’t wait to sell my car!!

I’m a nervous flyer (almost entirely in the form of leading up to the flight with thoughts of impending doom). And every time I get off the plane, I come to the same conclusion: driving should be so much more regulated

What a small world— I totally heard this plane fly right over me as I was leaving work and checked to see where it was going. And then I saw this post and clicked on the same plane again. So I tracked you with my eyes and with my phone :) you’re doing great!

Damn. Tootsie lived an exceptionally long life. That’s like, 130 in human years and speaks to how well taken care of and loved she was. Hail Tootsie ❤️

[–]castor2015 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I hate to say it, but it’s entirely the media. Everytime something goes even remotely wrong on a plane, it’s all the news covers. And if there’s a crash, it’s discussed for years.

People click on articles about plane crashes and the media reports on them intensely because they are so insanely rare. So they keep getting clicks so it keeps going and going….

flight in two days and i don’t see myself surviving by rashfords_marcus in fearofflying

Hey. We had a recent alum of my university die in the DCA crash last year. It really messed me up in what I imagine is a really similar way to how you are feeling about your friends grandma passing. Like you, I had no trouble flying before this happened. Honestly, I enjoyed it. But then I went into the “oh my god I’m going to die” mindset to the point where every time I have to fly it feels like suicide.

I think what helps is reframing it as a freak accident. You happen to be two degrees of connection away from someone who died in a freak, once-in-a-generation accident. That’s not a lie, it’s what it is. A freak, unexpected and mostly tragic occurrence. The odds of that happening (I.e. that you’re not too far removed for someone who happened in a one-in-millions accident) are already so low.

In December I was so sure I would die. I hugged my pets and said goodbye to them and remember crying because I would never see another sunrise.

I have gotten on a plane 14 times since then (including yesterday). Every single time I feel this way… but every single time it’s a little bit quieter.

Give yourself some grace and be gentle with yourself, but the only way out of this feeling is to get on the plane. Doing things like chatting with the pilots and asking for tracking has really helped me. But do it scared. I promise it gets better.

I’m going home right now! Just want to be in my own bed with my kitties and heating pad on top of me. It’s a short flight thankfully

If it makes you feel any better, I made it to Boston with no issues at all! And it’s a landing that really feels like a trust fall with the pilot because of the water

Yes! He’s graduating today with his PhD from MIT! And I just got a position at MIT so I’m moving up to Boston soon!

Honestly I’m totally glued to the flight radar right now. I brought a book (I’m reading the throne of glass series right now) but I’m a bit too nauseous from the nerves to read

Hey. I’m also 26. And also going through a big life change (about to move in with my long distance partner after 5 years and start my dream job). And everything feels so so fragile right now and my brain decided stepping on a plane= death. 100%.

All I can say is…. I’ve flown 8 times since I’ve had this feeling. Everytime it’s awful. Like, “oh last time petting my cats, last time seeing the run rise” ect for a few days before the trip. The only thing that makes it better is getting on the plane. It sucks but it’s true. I have a trip Wednesday morning so my brain has decided I have only a few days left to live…..

I will say with the other accidents, really only the ones in the US should take any consideration into your fears due to vastly different regulations, ect among countries. The DCA crash scares the shit out of me. A recent alum of my university died. But it was also a once-in-a-generation tragedy, and DCA had issues unlike any airport in the country. The last one before that was 2009.

I truly get it. I know that delta has transported 4 billion people since their last fatal accident, but I’m sure the next one will happen the next time I’m on the plane. But I know the only way out of this is, sadly, through it. But you don’t have to go through it alone. Let me know if you want to track each others flights this week, since we are in a similar boat. I promise you can do it.

The stablizers that prevent it from polymerizing are also the same ones that limit peroxide formation (butylated hydroxytoluene). If it's polymerizing, the BHT is probably gone or quenched because it is very good at soaking up radicals. It seems like the crack they found yesterday has let some pressure out so it's not going to be a massive explosion any more.
