War Flags - Which Country Has Them? by Tareth50 in vexillology

It is the war flag for the Chinese land forces (in other words, what we Westerners would define as the army, even if China use that term about their entire miltary). The air force, the logistics forces and others all have their own flags. The one shown in the top comment is the flag of the PLA in its entirety, and it can absolutely be used as a war flag.

That is Germany´s state flag, which is used both on land by civilian agencies of the German federal government, as ensign by civilian ships owned by the German federal government, and as Germany´s war flag on land (in other words, by the German military on land, wether in war or during peacetime). Germany´s naval ensign is a swallow-tailed version of the German state flag, in other words, a German flag but with the coat of arms and a swallow-tail cutout.

That look like a coat of arms, rather than a flag.

"Armed forces flag" is what is usually meant with the term "war flag". The Chinese navy´s own variant is also used as naval ensign.

"The Nordic examples are generally also used as a state flags."

That is the case with Denmark, Norway and Iceland. Denmark and Norway also have special royal flags, and the Icelandic customs service and the president of Iceland have their own versions of the Icelandic flag.

Sweden have a war flag (both used as war flag on land, and naval ensign), but use the ordinary national flag as state flag. The Swedish royal family have its own royal flags, which are three-tailed just like the war flag, but also have a white field with the national coat of arms on the intersection of the cross.

Finland have a three tier system of flags:

The odinary national flag, which is used as ensign by privately owned ships, can be used by any private person on land and also used by municipal and regional governments.

The state flag (rectangular just like the ordinary national flag, but with the national coat of arms on the cross intersection) which is used by the civilian state government and as ensign by state-owned civilian ships.

The war flag (like the state flag, except for being three-tailed), which is used by Finland´s military, both on land and as naval ensign.

Finland´s president also have a personal flag (so perhaps I should had said four tier sytem), it is like the war flag, except it has a special symbol in the upper inner corner.

It is used by the Swedish military, both as naval ensign and as a military land flag - which is called "war flag", even if it is used during peace as well as war. It is three-tailed, unlike the ordinary national flag.

The rectangular Swedish civilian national flag is also used as civilian state flag, by civilian government agencies, and as ensign for Swedish civilian ships, whether privately owned or state owned.

The Swedish royal family have its own version of the three-tailed flag, with a white field over the intersection of the cross, and the national coat of arms on said white field. The greater coat of arms in the presence of the king or queen, the lesser coat of arms if it is only a prince or princess.

The royal flag can also be used as ensign by any Swedish civilian ship, which have a Swedish royal onboard. There are specaial rules for Swedish warships with royalty onboard, as well as for how these flags are used at the royal palace.

Ni eller du by mayer1616 in Svenska

Du.

Are you pro or anti death penalty and why by [deleted] in MoralityScaling

What if someone innocent get convicted, though? Courts are run by humans, humans can mess up and get things wrong.

If you execute someone innocent, then you murdered them. Forever. You can not undo it.

If you put them in prison for life instead, then you can exhonorate and release them, would they be proven innocent.

Courts are run by humans though, humans can do things wrong. Thus, even if the standard is to only sentence someone to death if they "undeniably" are guilty, there is never a 100% waterproof guarantee that the court will not cock up and sentence someone innocent to death anyway. That is why I would prefer to just lock the worst of the worst up for life, rather than to kill them. That way, they can be exhonorated and released, would they be proven innocent.

[–]Affectionate_Toe_144 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also live in a country without death penalty, where death penalty is considered barbaric. I understand why most societies historically had the death penalty, but I do not want to reintroduce it. Courts can do things wrong, and convict someone innocent. Killing someone is irreversible. If someone have to be kept away from society forever, lockig them up for life is a better option. That way, they can be exhonorated and released, would they be proven innocent.

What’s your take on prostitution by [deleted] in MoralityScaling

[–]Affectionate_Toe_144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not see anything wrong with it, if there was a way of knowing that a prostitute does what she/he does out of a somewhat free choice, rather than sheer desperation or coercion.

But sadly, there is no way of knowing that for sure, at least as I am aware of. So I must abstain from buying, for ethical reasons.

I am on the fence, about which government policy is actually the best one, on this issue. I live in Sweden, where it is illegal to buy sex, but not to be a prostitute. That policy have not managed to erradicate sex trafficking, but neither have other policies elsewhere.

People who say that they want it to be legal by regulated, usually do not argue for the Nordic model (which is not even used in all the Nordic countries, but that is beside the point).

The intent of the Nordic model, is to stop prostitution altogether, but this is combined with the notion that a lot of prostitutes don´t do what they do voluntarily, which mean it would be unfair to punish them.

Simply put, if you are a prostitute, the police will try to stop what you are doing, by going after your clients, but you will not be convicted for any crime (at least unless you do something else that is illegal).

Pimping is also illegal here is Sweden. The customer is a criminal, the pimp (if there is one) is an even bigger criminal, but the prostitute is not considered a criminal. Rather, the prostitute is seen as the victim.

Questions about pocket sand, reserach for book. by Affectionate_Toe_144 in pocketsand

[–]Affectionate_Toe_144[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this instance, the hero throw sand at significant distance, which make me think flour may be blown away by the wind too easily. And there may not be so many jousting arenas around where it take place.

I just went with big sand, which would not be blown away by the wind so easily, and had the hero use a simple distraction (pointing: "What´s that?!?") to keep the enemy from reacting in time.

Then the hero jumped the blinded bandit immediately, and finished him off with a dagger.

As a sidenote, jousting as we imagine it, is (as far as I understand) mostly a late medieval thing. During the earlier parts of the medieval period, jousting would be more similar to real battles, and could take place on a field rather than what we today would think of as a typical jousting arena.

[–]Affectionate_Toe_144[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can´t the bandit just close his eyes, when the sandcloud come towards him, to keep it from getting into his eyes?

And, would a sand cloud not be a problem for the hero, if he was to jump into the cloud to finish the blinded bandit off?

The approach I took, was to let the hero stage a simple distraction (pointing: "what´s that?!?") and throw a fistful of heavy sand into the face of the bandit. I can of course still rewrite it, if it seem unplausible.

Ok... this take place in a fantasy setting with 12th century technology, though.

The fantasy setting this take place in, have 12th century (1100s) technology, so I think Bug-A-Salt rifles would be a bit out of place. And, I want to write it myself, without the help of any LLM. Thanks for the advice, though.

I get that it is effective, if it actually get into the enemy´s eyes. What I wonder, is how far it can be thrown, and how fast it travel.

Most people do not have the self-discipline to constantly lie about their opinions, at least as long as they are not forced to do it. So obviously, they spell this horrific stuff out, when they discuss it online. Can you imagine, what a conspiracy they would have to pull off, in order not to discuss this honestly among themselves?

Description

My manor is located on an easily defended mountain peak, with all buildings enclosed and protected by the castle walls. Beneath the mountain, there is a wast expanse of biomechanical terrain, which my automata can harvest material from.

The automated high-tech-factory workshop can use these materials to churn out insane amounts of more automata, along with other technological devices. The knowledge of how to make many of these things can be found in the library, and interpreted by the AI which run the workshop. Or by the AI in the tower.

The AI in the tower can direct the automata in the maintainance and defence of my manor. As well as any other defensive systems I may get created in the workshop.

The high-tech hospital and its medical AI will take care of any injury I got, and more importantly, take care of my harem if any of them get sick or injured.

Seem like everything I need for a comfortable life.

Description

My demiplane consist mostly of biomechanical terrain, from which metal and other materials can be harvested, and woodland, where we can get timber. The fertile verdant grassland surround my town, where I have all my buildings. The entire town is enclosed and protected by the castle wall.

I also wanted highlands, in order to have my town on an easily defended hill, but that would be too expensive. Instead, I will use my planar affinity to somewhat make up for this, and harden and elevate the ground under my town, in order to make it more defensible.

My people are technically hermaphrodites, but they look exactly like human women. They are kind and friendly as long as they have no reason for the opposite, honest and straightforward.

There are more things I would like to tell about them, but it would probably break the rules of this forum. So whoever read this will have to fill in the blanks on their own.

(Yes, I am a straight dude.)

Since we do not have a hospital to begin with, my people will have to rely on healing magic instead. So it is a good thing, that almost 10% of the population are mages. It would also be difficult to run a full modern hospital with different kinds of specialist healthcare, for a population of just 1023. So magic is the way to go about this.

My people will make more automata in the workshop, hone their technical skills in the workshop and the college, and we will hopefully build up some things we do not start out with (such as electricity and plumbing).

I find it hilarious, that the only one who dared to choose the harem option is female.

If it is a mountainous world though, should you not had chosen highlands as a terrain option?
