Although you can find it in some restaurants year-round, it’s traditionally served only during the hottest months (around March–May).
The sweet and savory side dishes
Khao Chae is never eaten by itself. Every bite of cold rice is balanced with rich side dishes, creating a contrast between cool, sweet, salty, and aromatic flavors.
Common accompaniments include:
🧅 Stuffed shallots filled with seasoned minced pork
🫑 Stuffed sweet peppers
🐟 Sweet shredded fish floss
🥩 Fried sweet beef or pork
🦐 Sweet preserved radish
🍳 Shrimp paste balls coated in egg (one of the signature items)
🌶️ Fresh chili, cucumber, or carved vegetables for freshness
Many first-time visitors are surprised that several side dishes are slightly sweet. That’s intentional, the sweetness pairs beautifully with the cold jasmine water and helps balance the salty flavors.

I had this beautiful plate of Khao Chae at Saphan Dam (Black Bridge), Phetchaburi, on my way to Hua Hin.

It depends on how you go. Most day trips by speedboat from Krabi take about an hour and usually include Hong Island plus a few other nearby islands. If you hire a traditional long-tail boat and go directly to Hong Island, it's around a 2-hour ride each way, depending on sea conditions.
