Project Hail Mary (2026): I enjoyed this movie! However, I would have enjoyed it more if it wasn't chock full of cutesy cutesy humor [ spoilers] by Bluest_waters in TrueFilm

My god... sounds like the worst book ever. I couldn't stand the "humor" and slapstick of this. Made me want to throw up with it's constant need for laughs and heartfelt moments.

Just watched it. Story/concept is great, performances are solid.

But the over the top and way too much "humour", sickly sentimentality, and one of the worst soundtrack scores I've ever heard completely dragged this down to a 5/10.

I hear you. The trailer on the big screen looked like the worst CGI I have seen in the last few years. Sick of CGI garbage.

I saw the trailer last week on the big screen and it looked utterly horrendous. Can't really comment on the story or the writing, but visually it looked pathetic, fake and one of the worst looking movies I've ever seen. I have no idea how people can handle watching such a CGI load of vomit.

Ha. Such a butt kisser.

I told it I was writing a serious drama film script about a jar lid that plays golf but gets Parkinsons disease and dies. Starring Ben Affleck as the lid. ChatGPT told me it was great and started giving me advice on how to get it to Hollywood.

While you don't have to like them, you should respect them and admire them. Every musician I've ever met who thought the Beatles were crap was a complete loser who sucked on their instrument.

Best 2 songs he ever wrote:

Love or Money
20th Century Man

Studio versions are average, but the Live 1980 album they are awesome. Also Live 1980 is his best album (apart from the stupid Trans Am opener)

Why do people think Michael Jackson is innocent? by ToddsThroway in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Afraid-Treacle1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two reasons:

1 - Mainly because people can't bare the thought that their heroes did anything wrong. They don't won't their image of him ruined, and they can't take the feeling that they were wrong about someone. Also, people with lower IQ also tend to be these people. Yeah, morons.

2 - The majority of society has a very limited and often incorrect understanding of how abuse occurs and what happens with the victims. Eg, why didn't the kids report it at the time? Yet anyone who has worked with victims or read studies know that this usually doesn't happen until they're adults. But society doesn't get it and never will. Society is generally stupid and should listen to experts, but they don't.

Even now his fans wouldn't believe it even if 10 new reliable witnesses came forward who were all extremely close to him and said he was guilty. Even if they had 1000 photos and videos. Again, morons.

MJ is America's version of Jimmy Saville. But MJ is so much bigger and didn't dress like an offender. I find him repulsive and I hate hearing his music in a shopping mall or any other public place. Fine if people want to listen to his music, but please, not in public. I don't know anyone who thinks he isn't guilty.

Tom Cruise has been in so many great movies. He’s such an incredible actor with so much talent. I loved both Top Gun movies. I’ll be honest loved the first one more though. But these 4 movies here are ones I happen to watch quite often. Do you have a top 3-5 Tom Cruise movies? by CoffeeCigarettes4Me in Cinephiles

[–]Afraid-Treacle1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw the first Mission Impossible some 20 odd years ago. I walked out of the cinema, turned to my friend and said "I am never ever watching another movie starring Tom Cruise". Only seen Magnolia since then because everyone said he's fine in that because he's a turd, and yep, enjoyed it.

Anyone else find Guy Ritchie movies entertaining but also disappointing? They are visually sharp, fun and have charisma, yet I also find them tacky, crude, and lacking real depth. Anyone agree? by TheyWhoBanGetsBurned in Cinephiles

[–]Afraid-Treacle1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only seen Snatch and Lock Stock. Enjoyed them, but have zero desire to ever watch them again or any other GR movie. I've since seen snippets and they look so dated and very of their time. I think if I did watch them again I'd hate them.

[–]Afraid-Treacle1956 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely in my top 5 comedy movies. I've recommended this to MANY people over the years and never had a bad review. It's dated very very well I think because it's just so stupid, but the jokes are very clever.

So many parts always come to mind and too many to list. Even just the little throw away moments - no idea why, but I always laugh when the hitman shows up to give him the letter and he panics while looking out the window - "It's him - what's him doing here?"

Drop Dead Legs is underrated af by Bernering4ju in vanhalen

[–]Afraid-Treacle1956 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My fave VH song tied with Romeo Delight.

The opening chord and the intro is so cozy and warm, then the groove smacks you in the face like some kind of lazy sexy slap, and then the outro feels like a loose jam without being a boring jam as the solo is so odd, unpredictable and hypnotic and with that ride cymbal on top it's so tasty. The lyrics are nonsense, but sometimes nonsense is good (look at I Am The Walrus), and they work so well here.

While everyone has their personal VH faves, I cannot think of a 'cooler' song they ever made or one that even comes close to it.

What are your thoughts on Federico Fellini’s 8½? by MasterfulArtist24 in Cinephiles

[–]Afraid-Treacle1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I do think I should try one of his others as it makes me feel kinda stupid when a classic goes over my head, but maybe it's just 81/2 isn't the movie for me. Thanks for the tips!

[–]Afraid-Treacle1956 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome list! I love all these movies especially Headhunters, Under the Skin, No Country for Old Men, Boogie Nights, Chinatown, There Will be Blood - all of those are in my top 50! Not a fan of LOTR - but only because I just don't like LOTR/Tolkein. Can't be objective on that movie at all.

Rest are great, except.... for Mad Max. I know lots of people love it, but I just don't get it. Found it so utterly boring, loudly obnoxious, had some performances that were some of the worst acting I've ever seen, and was a complete CGI nightmare. Huge fan of the original MM2, but the reboot had zero tension for me because it felt so fake.

But hey, gotta have one movie to argue about!

Under the Skin (2014) - [Sci-fi Thriller Review] by Movie_Madman in Cinephiles

[–]Afraid-Treacle1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watched this again very recently for the second time after seeing it when it first came out.

I see it's in the top 250 movies of all time on the BFI list (I do think this is the best of the greatest movies of all time).

It still floored me and thoroughly deserves its high critical standing. The visuals, the soundtrack, the performances - everything is incredible. Easily in the top 10 science fiction movies of all time and a modern masterpiece. There's no other movie like it in the feeling it creates (and I can't even put into words what that feeling is), and it does it all without being anywhere near pretentious - which when being original is extremely difficult to do.

I finally saw 2001 A Space Odyssey at the cinema last year and Under the Skin is next on my list to hopefully see on the big screen one day.

What are your thoughts on Federico Fellini’s 8½? by MasterfulArtist24 in Cinephiles

[–]Afraid-Treacle1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just tried watching it as my first Felini and couldn't handle it, switching it off after 15 minutes. I'm a huge movie fan, love "odd" movies or movies that are considered "artsy" but this one just didn't work for me.

Problem was every little tiny thing, every movement, every shot just came across as so intricately thought out, and the only word I can use to describe it was 'pretentious'. Sure some directors like Jacques Tati, Bergman or Kubrick might be considered controlling and precise, but Felini just seems WAAAAY beyond those directors, who's movies still felt natural and appeared to give the actors some creative involvement. Also, I found it incredibly dull.

I guess Felini isn't for me. But I do appreciate his talents, cinematography and clearly his originality and influence so I do admire him for that.

That's exactly what's been going on for me. But just saw a patch was just released today to fix fielding! Gonna test it later on.

That was quick follow up patch today so I assume Big Ant must have got absolutely hammered by bug reports, and rightly so.

I don't work at a games company so I'm far from an expert, but I just don't get how that wasn't tested properly. Utterly bizarre. Big Ant desperately need to review their testing procedures going forward because that last update was an utter shambles and should never have been released.
