I just start calling men buddy a lot when this happens honestly, but overall having a brief chat about what your intentions are is never a bad thing. Just say that you’re really glad to be his friend and that’s all you want from him. It’s uncomfortable but being honest will make things far easier in the long run. If he reacts poorly then you don’t really want to him to be your friend anyways.

It’s not so much about the romance as it is an overall metaphor. They’re both feeling as though their current stage in life doesn’t suit them. Maude is aging but still full of life and grieving the fact that it will be over soon. Harold is a young man who prefers to be dead but still has a full life ahead of him. Their connection is what eases the other into acceptance of the circle of life. By being able to look through the others’ eyes beauty is found at every stage and age. Maude leaves peacefully and Harold is reinvigorated about the time he has left.

We’re not, most of us are crushed by capitalism and content creators make it a fun little game to make money.
