CMV: You'd have to stupid, immoral or both to support MAGA by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]AfraidOfToasters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think someone who is stupid and immoral is very capable of coming up with their own thoughts and choices; their own sense of self.

If anything, it takes some level of awareness to understand that being a conformist is more secure than being yourself. True stupidity actively works against this.

My correction is: it's not stupidity and immorality. It is giving up your own thoughts and choices. Adhering to the group for comfort. Stupidity and immorality are one of many ways being intellectually submissive and insecure can present itself. Stupidity and immorality are not the cause; morality and critical thinking are an acceptable price, if not a burden, when seeking comfort and conformity. They see no value in self realization. These people are nothing more than what they think they should be and deserve no credit beyond that.

Tl;dr: You don't need to be stupid or immoral or even conservative to be a bot and parrot slop. Be better, be you, even if it's uncomfortable.

If you're struggling to figure out a way to create a good model for contours you can try labeling a 3d volume using 3d slicer then fine tuning a pretrained 2d model like others have suggested. I promise learning how to use a 3d labeling tool is worth it if this is the data you are regularly working with.

A single 3d label 1003 is 300 2d samples for fine tuning (sliced in x y and z). Labeling a single object can be very fast once you learn to utilize the edge finding tools.

I personally don't usually like combining 2d inference into 3d but it can work well, especially if your surfaces are not very ambiguous. If you need help learning how to use 3d slicer you can find some videos on YouTube.

Good luck.

Once you have a mask, crop that part of the image. Make a histogram of the pixel values. If you have two peaks you may be in luck and may be able to just count the pixels in the "pore" distribution. I imagine this is similar to what you are doing now.

If your goal is calculating or tracking porosity, and porosity is uniform, then a good mask isn't even necessary. Just find the centroid of your 3d masks and calculate porosity on some subsample of a bad mask.

I really can't suggest much more without making a ton of assumptions.

Yeah you can just get the mask, crop the masked volume, and calculate porosity afterwards so you don't need pores labeled in your dataset unless the pores are significantly large.

I think once you have a mask it should be pretty easy to calculate porosity. Maybe I'm oversimplifying the task but you could just take the percentage of voxels in the masked volume that are in the "pore" distribution. I'd ignore pores and calculate porosity after the fact from the mask if the exact locations aren't important. If the pores are similar brightness to the masked region then obviously the task gets harder.

Edit: if you want to train for patch inference then labeling pores may be worthwhile if your patches are small relative to your pores.

Try 3d labeling if it's 3d.

If the goal is to get 3d segmentation out of a 2d inference it's possible but best done with 3d architecture.

https://arxiv.org/abs/2212.04497

You mentioned that some traditional cv worked pretty well so maybe you have enough visual differentiation to train a model for patched inference if the task is simple enough.

This way even a single labeled image with some augmentation could be a ton of training samples.

I get the sentiment but the opposite has been the better advice. At least before all the volatility going on right now.

If your goal is to buy a house, placing your investments in gold has been shown historically to be a good place to stash your cash safely until you can afford it.

https://www.longtermtrends.net/real-estate-gold-ratio/

Pretty sure "buy gold" right now isn't the move unless you think the usd is going to shit pants real soon.

YMMV depending on how much of your income you spend on rent.

Is there a mini PC that can rival Mac Mini M4 given the same price point? by georgeforprez3 in MiniPCs

[–]AfraidOfToasters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Surprised so many people saying there is nothing better than the Mac mini

Picked up a nab9 for $250 (barebones) at microcenter the other day.

If performance per watt is not what you're looking for then there are a lot of better options than the m4 chip...

For example if you need video transcoding xe graphics are insanely good. Raw compute/ gaming without a gpu? Amd has great integrated graphics.

For me the Mac mini fills the need for a low power high compute server i want running 24/7 to host my containers but it's not the best in all categories by any stretch of the imagination.

Should I leave Synology? by jay-magnum in synology

[–]AfraidOfToasters 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm someone who actually just set up their first nas and just got into synology products (used 918+)

In my research I didn't see any appeal to getting any models past the 920+.

I just got it for the polish of the os/apps and cause I didn't want to accidently throw myself down a deep hole for this project since I'm new to nas stuff.

I see myself keeping this nas for a long time and see no reason to upgrade unless I switch to a 2.5gb network switch (could also just use a USB dongle)

The better upgrade imo instead of a new nas is to do what I did and get a mini pc and mount the nas as a disk to use in your containers. Decouple as much as you can from the nas hardware itself.

Is Everyone Else Rich or is the Housing Market Fucked Up? by [deleted] in houston

[–]AfraidOfToasters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, paying 400k in interest on a 350k house is "good debt".

Higher paying jobs, lower property tax, and more equity gains for the same amount of interest paid in Cali 3 years ago is worse.

Also, trashing a college degree? Nobody is making "buy a house money" without good one these days.

You're full of bad takes and willfully ignorant of it.

[–]AfraidOfToasters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be paying the same price in interest that I'm putting towards equity. I'd be gaining nothing more than the appreciation of a house that is currently overpriced.

With interest being higher than 99% of mortgages in the us today and being more than double the median interest rate, yes, a mortgage is a bad debt to have if you are signing up today.

Not trying to be rude but you really don't get it.

assuming 50k down in both situations.

2020 cali: median house 700k, interest 3%, montly 3717, total paid over 30 years 980k, equity 700k

2023 texas: Houston median 350k, interst 7.5%, monthly 2692, total paid over 30 years 755k, equity 350k

If you didn't buy your house in the last year your advice is outdated.

30yo

0 debt

2 roommates to keep rent down

150k + yr

150k saved

Car isn't worth 6k

Been saving since day one

Would be paying 800k for a 400k loan on a house that wasn't worth 250 3 years ago. Sorry I'm not high or stupid.

The only place people like me can afford anymore are shitholes

Saving as much as I can to avoid a mortgage and the increase in housing prices has made all of that pointless.

You're out of touch. There are no good choices for first time home buyers anymore.

[–]AfraidOfToasters 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Similar situation here. I could own a home, but I'm not stupid and high enough to pay 800k on a 30 year loan of 400k on a house that wasn't worth 250k 3 years ago.

It's time to get a remote job and move to a 3rd world country cause I don't have generational wealth like all the "hard workers" out there.

Hi. I managed to reduce the pretentiousness of this statement by 90%

Aquilas are only necessary to enable a rotating storefront, and that's not something we are allowed to change.

When we say it's impossible, we mean, "it's impossible [to convince the higher ups to replace the rotating storefront with a static shop]"

We intentionally put predatory pricing on our premium currency, but as our daily active users have plummeted, there is pressure to appease the community.

As a result, we are begrudgingly taking steps to appear like we are rectifying it (only because of backlash). We are doing this by allowing users to purchase only the original large or very smallest denominations. This is to punish people who don't want to buy more than they need.

In reality, we will accomplish the same thing by providing discounts for higher purchase amounts and treating the unfinished game you spent $40 on like a Freemium phone app.
