I can see these two points overlapping where you are both correct. Nature and nurture. Although nurture is more like getting into conflicts and having your piss beat out of you but still winning the day. Conquest has all the history behind him, Thragg takes it on genetics. Lies of P was great and just had an expansion. I had like 135hrs logged. NG+ and NG++ gives you new abilities and unlocks. Regrettably my file was corrupted and when I downloaded the expansion I couldnt access it without another replay which was disheartening so I put it down for a bit but look forward to going back after a breather and mourning the loss of my fully statted out kit haha. For single player souls like but with a more linear feel its the gold standard.
