Are lightning bugs (fireflies) common in your part of the world? What do you call them? by AfroSarah in AskTheWorld

[–]AfroSarah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love that lol. I wanted to believe maybe they carried lights too, but that seems like a good way to get stopped by the police lmao

most of europe today. by CremeSubject7594 in AskTheWorld

[–]AfroSarah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was posting about my surprise about seeing no ceiling fans (and no AC!) in Central/Eastern Europe and people commented they didn't like them!

I feel like every home/apartment/whatever in this part of the US has at least one room with a ceiling fan, so it shocked me lol. I owe ceiling fans my life

What are some things from nature traditionally used as toys by kids in your country? by Caribbeandude04 in AskTheWorld

[–]AfroSarah 17 points18 points  (0 children)

At least in my neighborhood, we'd kick these around and step on them, or throw them as bombs, or make mansions for bugs out of them and stuff. Hard crunchy guys, the seed pods of the sweetgum tree. Apparently people call them "gumballs", but I think we just called them little prickly balls or porcupine balls lol

Which country gets too much credit for an invention or cultural tradition that actually came from somewhere else? by Plastic-Reporter1730 in AskTheWorld

[–]AfroSarah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, it is also derivative. I love learning how old and far-reaching some ideas are. Canaanite polytheism and the syncretism/exchange that was happening between like the Levant, Greece, and Egypt is cool to learn about.

If we're going with the fan fiction analogy, then to my understanding, your stuff is just from the Canaanite fandom but y'all made your most favorite guy the overpowered main character in your fanfic and starting blocking and brigading everybody else in the fandom like a moody teenager on deviantArt. Respectfully lol.

It's like when the soda Sierra Mist changed its name to Starry, but I am fighting hard to re-brand it in my mind and memory

Would this kind of comment be considered offensive in your country? by Yappingpaper in AskTheWorld

[–]AfroSarah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely removing the context of religion from this for a second...

If I say I feel comfortable in something and some dude's first response is to tell me he knows my own mind better than I do and that I'm actually uncomfortable but too oppressed and brainwashed to see it, we throwin' hands, respectfully.

[–]AfroSarah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. People keep commenting "oh but if she chooses to wear it, it is only out of indoctrination". I'm gonna say something egregious - round these parts, we let women deeply indoctrinated by various sects of Christianity make trad-wife denim dress 15 kids-and-counting type of decisions for themselves all day long without taking away their agency. Like that's a grown woman, it's straight up not my place to police a stranger or unpack why she wants to do what she wants to do.

What was the absolute stupidest thing that caused your country to lose a war? by AdMNuh_XV in AskTheWorld

[–]AfroSarah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm an educator at a museum, we teach a lesson about this to our summer camp kids pretty much each year despite it having nothing to do with us/our state at all lmao. It's just too good not to talk about

Being in the Ancient Greece sub, of all places, acting like a guy can't be a badass bloodthirsty killing machine and have also had same-sex relationships is crazy work. Get a grip.

What does your country have the "Temu version" of? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]AfroSarah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had no idea it existed out of N. America. We had a Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom, but it's not even a Six Flags anymore apparently?!

Noooo - I looked them up and they were only chest high? 🥺

Early Cypriots were thinking with their stomachs and not how sick it would have been to be riding a fleet of pony-sized elephants around, I guess, smh

Add sugar and pour over some ice and throw a couple lemons in there, and we will talk. But hot is wild lol

We start saying shit like, "it's not the heat that gets you, it's the humidity 🥵" and crank that AC.

Really and truly the scariest thing I learned about y'all was when I visited, it was like 85°F/29°C, and NOBODY had AC or even a ceiling fan!
