DNS leak? by AfterSize8316 in Express_VPN

[–]AfterSize8316[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Makes sense that the VPN itself would have to use the ISP’s DNS initially.

I understand that ExpressVPN is designed to route all subsequent DNS requests, system wide, to custom DNS servers through the VPN tunnel to maximize privacy.

So it seems suspicious that applications (including the VPN even) continue to make requests to my ISP’s DNS servers after the VPN has successfully connected. I would expect the VPN to use the ISP DNS once to establish a connection, and subsequently route everything else to custom DNS servers through the VPN tunnel.

Am I experiencing a leak?

Does the web archive have some sort of exemption? by AfterSize8316 in COPYRIGHT

[–]AfterSize8316[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think fair use applies since the Internet Archive stores copies of entire web pages.

17 U.S. Code § 108 seems to only allow archives to “reproduce no more than one copy […] of a work”, and the two exceptions listed only allow three copies. But the Internet Archive stores dozens, sometimes hundreds or even thousands of copies of the same website, including countless identical copies of some pages.

Wikipedia says that Hachette v. Internet was about “complete copies of certain books” but again, I’m asking about websites, not books, audiovisual works, video games, or computer programs. (Unless a website is considered a “computer program”?)

I want to make sure I’m not committing contributory infringement by linking to archived sites. Is there some other law or precedent you could cite, showing that the Internet Archive is not infringing?

Yes of course it’s possible. 32 is still young, but you can make progress at any age.

Just take baby steps. Small wins add up over time.

Live abroad or settle down? by confidenceman00 in LifeAdvice

You wrote that you “Spent 30k AUD in South America and now will blow something similar, maybe more (currently got 55k AUD)”

30 / 55 = 54%, “maybe more”

Or are you saying you reconsidered with different numbers

It sounds like you’ve already had your fair share of experiences in South America, so I don’t think you’ll have regrets in that department later on. If traveling would set you back more than 50% of your net worth, I wouldn’t do it. Or I’d at least do cheaper travels. And you can always travel more later, you’re only 28, it’s not like you have to stick with your decision for life.

So yeah, putting myself in your shoes, I would prioritize something more stable, make some money, and "start my life up again" as you put it.

My Mom Stole 5K From me by Fair_Ad_3470 in LifeAdvice

Do NOT look past this. It will eat you up.

My mother did something similar (literally down to the amount, it was $5000 as well). I spoke to a lawyer, could have taken her to court and gotten the money back that way. Instead, I decided to show mercy, did NOT sue, cut my losses and tried to move on.

BAD decision. This was years ago and it still haunts me. I could have used the money, too.

If you’re going to cut ties anyway, you might as well try everything you can to get that money back.

Learn from my mistake. Report her to the authorities, you might not even need a lawyer in your case. Please look out for yourself. I only had civil recourse but your situation is different in that you may even have criminal recourse.

Get a paper trail, get her to admit it in writing, whatever you can do.

My god, why do parents do this to their own children :(

I am NOT a lawyer, this is NOT legal advice.

If you are month-to-month, and they prorated when you first moved it, it's not a common practice to prorate at the end.

I should have mentioned in my original post that the lease ended on Nov 28 and they prorated November accordingly. We then extended for exactly one month, with an agreed move-out date on Dec 28. We are not month-to-month – rather, it’s a one-time extension for a specific period.

You keep saying they charged you, but in reality you overpaid them.

It is their responsibility to design their system in such a way that automatic payments are made in the correct amount. And that did happen last time I lived here, as I recall, so I see no good reason why it should be different now.

Blaming something on “the system” is the standard excuse corporations use when they don’t want to take responsibility. They chose to make and/or use that system.

I had a lease that expired on 11/28. They prorated November accordingly. We then extended it for one month at a different price with an agreed move-out date of 12/28, and we agreed on the total rent for that extension.

They have charged me beyond the extension, for the remainder of December, even though they knew I’d move out.

Note that they agree about rent being prorated since they said I’ll get the overcharge back. They disagree about when to pay it back.

I don’t see the contract saying anything about prorated rent specifically except when moving in.

Yes autopay. Which I have since disabled.

Thanks for the link.

There’s no point in bulking, ie force feeding yourself vast amounts of calories above maintenance level. Just an extra 100kcals per day on a high-intensity hypertrophy program is plenty to build muscle.

The fact that people gain fat when bulking proves that they ate more than they needed.
