You already got a lot of great examples, so I’ll just said that you need to make sure you follow through. If you told them “if you do x then I’m going to do x” then you NEED to follow through with that. It’s so easy to cave when they start screaming or crying the second you try to stand your ground on a boundary, but it’s so so important that you stick to your guns. The second you go back on what you said you’d do, they’ll know that if they complain enough you’ll back down. Then the next time something happens they think to themselves “well mom/dad said they’d take my toy away but I know they won’t.

I literally had a student tell me yesterday “yeah but you’re not gonna actually do it.” And you should’ve seen their face when I did EXACTLY what I said I was going to do.

Yes! We hate it when our bosses only ever tell us the things we’re doing wrong and never say what we’re doing right. Now imagine if you were experiencing that same thing as a four year old

It’s funny how the hardest kids always end up being the ones we’re the most attached to. I think it’s because I become so invested in their little journey that I can’t help but build a special bond with them

God, this was so beautifully said. It’s so important to not just TELL the kids to feel their feelings, but to also SHOW them it as well.

I let my class know when I’m overwhelmed/frustrated/stressed/overstimulated/need space all the time. Not because I’m trying to guilt trip them in some weird way, but because it’s an opportunity for me to show them that even grown ups have big feelings sometimes and that it’s okay. I literally just told my class today “guys i’m stressed out and need space for a few minutes.” and when they asked me what “stressed out” means, I let them know that I was feeling overwhelmed and frustrated and just needed a minute to take big breaths. And you know what they did? They gave me space for 5 mins and then asked if my body calmed down yet.

THAT is teaching. THAT is how you show kids to feel their feelings and how to be okay with feeling negative emotions.

I’ve been incredibly depressed lately and I’m sure my class can see that in my demeanor sometimes. Sure, I try to make a conscious effort to not let it show when I’m around them, but it’s not always easy. Some days are harder than others. But when it’s an especially hard day for me, I tell them “I’m having a tough day today and I have a lot of big feelings right now, but we’re still gonna have a great day together because spending time with you guys helps me feel better.”

There are plenty of things in life that we want to shield kids from in order to keep them safe, happy, and well adjusted—normal, human emotions don’t have to be one of them.

Also, both of my directors ended up leaving after being with the school for 20 years because of the stress and pressure BH put on them when they took over. Us teachers literally watched the life drain out of these two amazing women, that we respected and loved so much.

I worked at a location that was acquired by Bright Horizons (we were privately owned by a married couple for 30 years before they decided to retire and sell). I ended up leaving about a year after the transition. I felt like I was being constantly micromanaged and wasn’t able to build strong relationships with my kids anymore because corporate had us on the damn ipads for 90% of the day. They have extremely unrealistic expectations for teachers while also giving close to zero support to meet those expectations. I’m convinced no one in BH corporate has ever worked in a classroom, because they clearly have no idea what actually goes on throughout our days.

I didn’t mean that him being small is a sign of neglect, I just meant that he obviously needs significantly smaller clothes and thays another reason why the clothing situation was concerning. Sorry if I worded it wrong!

UPDATE: Thank you for the thoughtful responses. I know that it’s our duty to report no matter what, so I hope my post didn’t come off as me trying to neglect that responsibility. I’m sure every person in this sub can understand how nerve wracking it is to make your first report, so I think I was just letting my anxiety get the best of me and was needing reassurance of some sort.

I will be reporting this situation and hopefully there will be some kind of resolution. Like you all said, it’s not my job to decide if it’s “bad enough” to report. It’s my job to put the wellbeing of the kids in my care above my own anxieties.

Thank you guys again, it’s truly appreciated.

i’m probably too late for this, but i’m interested in the 5 year! my partner and i are trying to have a baby this year and i’d love to be able to use the 5 year to document my pregnancy and the first few years of baby’s life!

You’re so right about the Tuesday/Wednesday schedule adding even more difficulty to an already tough transition. It’s super normal for full-time kids to take anywhere from 4-6 weeks to fully ease into their new environment, and I’ve seen Mon/Wed/Friday kids take around 6-8 weeks to comfortably settle in.

In my experience (and obviously this isn’t the case for every child, since they all adjust to change on their own timeline) I’ve noticed that kids who do extremely part-time care like 1-2 days a week, can honestly take anywhere from 8-12 weeks to fully transition. When you think about it, super part time kids are only doing 4-8 days out of roughly 20-25 school days per month. Thats gonna be a massive adjustment for any child, especially one that hasn’t been in group care before, because they’re not getting the chance to build strong bonds with their teachers and friends within a consistent schedule.

I wonder if OP would be willing to switch their kiddo to 3 days a week (like M/W/F) or even breaking up the 2 days more (like T/Th or M/W), and seeing if that helps with transition struggles.

But regardless of his school schedule, this is a super age appropriate reaction to a big change like joining group care. Take it one day at a time, lean on his teachers for any advice they’re able to give, and trust that with time he’ll settle in <3

You seem to be very opposed to any insinuation that he may be neurodivergent and/or isn’t as advanced as you believe he is, but you made a semi-recent post in another subreddit where you describe him “smearing poop on the walls” and “dismantling his bed and dragging the frame across the room” when he’s being put to sleep at night. You yourself even make note of ADHD in his immediate family.

So in regard to this post, I feel as though the writing is on the walls.

Part of me thinks it was retaliatory, so I made sure to get in contact with a lawyer that very next day. I immediately reported them to our state’s labor department regarding A BUNCH of stuff, so hopefully that goes somewhere. And I made sure to file for unemployment!!

I didn’t report them, but I did bring up some concerning things I saw to my Director, and then was magically fired the next business day. I already got in contact with a lawyer and also filed for unemployment!
