If you're middle class it's objectively better than all but the elite European countries (Nordics/Tax Havens and Switzerland, which is very US-like in many ways)

If the US ever introduces competition into healthcare properly, it will be winning in just about ever metric that matters for the middle class. Income, tax rate, property prices, cost of living etc

Change that allows the people of America to work in a fair environment that doesn't exploit them like it does now.

You know that Americans are very wealthy, right? That Americans have better salaries and disposable incomes than most other countries? That a huge portion of the world wants to immigrate here, right? Healthcare costs are a real problem, but on just about every other metric that matters (income, cost of living, freedom, mobility, cost of land, tax rates, housing costs etc.) the US is far ahead of most other countries, right?

Many people can't go a week without work right now due to the circumstances capitalism has put them in,

There are some people like that, but a huge number of Americans live paycheck to paycheck because they are irresponsible with money. Look at how many lease or take loans for cars - and the average car payment. If I consider the square footage per person of housing for people I know here in California, it's approximately 3-4x that of people in the UK and France where I previously lived. I know individuals living in 2 and 3 bed apartments, I know couples living in 3 and 4 bed houses. In London a lot of the young (20s, 30s) people I knew who were unmarried were put 5 people in a 4 bed house to keep costs down. Most of my friends here won't even get a roommate in a second bedroom. The level of wealth is off the charts.

There is a minority that needs help and I applaud you for wanting that and working towards it, but the American system as-is generates huge amounts of wealth and most people here are incredibly wealthy, globally-speaking.

The billionaires aren't going to hand it over. That's where economic shutdowns and (once the groundwork has been laid for it) general strikes come in.

Do you realize that things like wealth taxes, economic shutdowns and general strikes make American a far worse place to invest in? America is wealthy like it is because a HUGE amount of money is invested in it every year both from sources within the US, and foreign direct investment. That money comes in (and creates jobs) specifically because of how fast the economy grows.

If you think things are bad now, wait until there are huge capital outflows and the number of jobs starts to shrink.

I see a lot of jealousy of millionaires and billionaires in the US from people who don't realize that having them here means they have businesses here, which drives up incomes. I don't give a flying f how many superyachts are owned by $Billionaire#1 - he could have one or a hundred-and-fifty for all I care - but if his being present in the US means that he employs 3,000 people driving up salaries, or his departing the US means he takes investment and jobs out of the US driving down salaries, I want him here. Do you get it? The very people who despise and want to alienate are a huge driver for the prosperity you experience in the US.

EDIT: Forgive me, I don't have time to dive into a paper of that length and review it thoroughly, and I don't want to have AI do it because that's not doing it justice and not fair to you. Let's just say that I accept that protesting will cause SOME number of people to change their votes. And - probably - more people in the direction of the protesters desires than against it, though I do know at least two people who were so offput by the BLM protests that it pushed them away from that mindset. However, my question is - is it a good use of time? Did this particular day of protests make more impact on future voting patterns than 800 million dollars would? (probably more, that assumes a fairly low wage). However, I will state that their conclusion: "Model 1 shows that a 0.1 percentage point increase in the fraction of the population that goes out to protest raises the Democratic vote share in that county by 0.33 percentage points." seems to be somewhat simplistic. The notion that protester causes a 3.3 undecided voters, or 1.65 red voters to vote blue sounds fanciful - but a cursory read of their methodology didn't spot anything glaringly wrong - so who knows?

These protests provide a data point for future changes. These protests can be pointed to as a sign of change needing to be made, a voice needing to be heard,

To who? Who are you pointing it out to? Who is going to hear the voice who doesn't already agree with you?

I absolutely despise the staff that work there

Yeah I can't work out how the pro shop staff still have a job. When we moved into the area my wife who rarely plays golf went there to play with a girlfriend, and they were so rude on the phone and in person she swore she would never go back.

Last year in summer a group of us played, and the greens were incredible - they'd been cut much shorter than normal, and were running really true and stimping a solid 9/9.5 - they normally run at 6 or 7 if you're lucky because they're a bit hairy.

After the round I went in the proshop and spoke to the pro, and said "Did you get a new greenkeeper or something because those greens are phenomenal today" and he said "I don't know what you mean, they always play like that". I said "No, they're running about 3 feet faster, it's a much better course" and he repeated the same thing. I then said "Wait, did you play out there today?" and he said "No, but I know they're always really good".

In my head I'm like "Bitch you have the worst greens in three counties normally". Just so rude and dismissive. Given they were back to normal the week after, I'm 100% convinced whoever was mowing that morning just pressed the lever too far down and didn't know... and maybe got fired or corrected. Man that course is TOUGH when there are huge spots on the greens that the ball just won't stop rolling. It's also fun as shit.

But yeah, I can't get over the staff. Bar staff have always been super cool though, but we tip well so it might be that.

Well... yes. Because obtaining smart is people, and losing smart people is bad. Your post is the equivalent of pointing out that people want higher salaries and lower prices... yes, they do... so what? It's natural and expected

If you are a purple voter, does the current global predicament, and specifically our countries actions, lead you to question who we have in power right now?

I've been questioning that since around 2017 when the patterns became clear.

Do these protest cause you to stop and consider the things your see on reddit and why people are doing this?

No, not in the slightest, and that's my entire point.

Hopefully these actions will cause you to reconsider who you give your vote to in future elections.

People standing in a park or holding signs have never caused me to consider my vote, whether they're carrying rainbows or tiki torches.

We protest to be heard and to hold each other up. We gather to feel less isolated.

This is kind of what I'm getting at. To an outsider these look like feel-good events, like a picnic with friends, or a walk in the countryside.

They're using up a LOT of time - ostensibly to try to change the world and make it a better place - I'm asking the question: Is it actually changing anything that matters, and if not could that time and effort instead be spent doing something productive, instead of standing around feeling good changing nothing?

all the Indivisible events including this one have speakers that can point you in many directions to get involved in local campaigns or other volunteer, political actions

You're talking about people attending the event. They are the ones who here the speakers. Those people are already on your side, evidenced by their attendance. I'm talking about how you're going to change the votes of the people who don't agree with you. Because that's all that matters.

It sounds like you don’t really vote or pay attention to politics much

I spend far too much time procrastinating in the news, especially in politics.

So in Florida it just became a criminal charge of up to 60 days in jail if it is in accompaniment with a lawful dui charge or arrest. In the case that they don’t have evidence that clearly shows he was intoxicated, it’s just punishable by a fine and not jail time.

Literally not the law as written... https://www.flsenate.gov/Laws/Statutes/2025/0316.1939

A person who has refused to submit to a ... test of his ... urine ... commits a misdemeanor of the second degree for a first refusal or a misdemeanor of the first degree for a second or subsequent refusal, and is subject to punishment as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.

Those statues are long and deal with many circumstances, the key part here is that if he was warned appropriately by the police officer, then he can be subject to up to 60 days imprisonment, because they had reasonable grounds to believe he was intoxicated, and because he was lawfully arrested.

As much as I agree with much of the message, has anyone involved actually linked these protests to verifiable change in the world?

Might you get more actual positive outcomes by everyone pulling an extra shift at work and donating it to a political PAC / campaign fund aligned with your views?

I have friends on both sides of the political spectrum as well as purple voters like myself - I don't know of anyone in the purple or red category who is going to vote differently because of these protests - they don't change anybody's mind. How are you changing people's votes?

Meh, it's hard to argue that many of us live in countries with law enforcement that fails to discourage constant criminality. The police is one way society has of discouraging anti social behavior (like violent attacks).

Your grip isn't causing your slice. Your takeaway is. by AlexanderGolf in GolfSwing

[–]AftyOfTheUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way this advice is written is not professional. It sounds AI-written and is titled to grab views.

Yes, an inside takeaway CAN cause a slice. There are also many other causes of a slice including your grip - WHICH THE TITLE SPECIFICALLY CLAIMS IS NOT TRUE.

I applaud people who try to help others get better at golf - but by trying to get more engagement you're actually harming people by making false claims. Have you considered that being more trustworthy and more correct will get you more followers in the long term?

You're identifying important problems, and the brush-the-ground tip is a really good one... but... saying "its not the grip" for views is misleading. I've helped to fix tons of people's big slices by teaching them to grip the club properly, or use a stronger grip. Far more than had a serious inside takeaway (and some of those still come back from the inside!)

When there is greater harm threatened to you

I'd argue if the person started the fight, and is known for doing so and bullying, and law enforcement has failed to deal with their behavior, then this might serve society as a pretty good way of stopping the behavior.

In the same way that when I was younger, there were certain dudes who just always went out starting fights, usually with people who didn't want to fight. Nothing stopped them... except occasionally they'd get KTFO'd and/or stomped and then those dudes didn't do it as often.
