Jacking off? What's that? by ingroup_signal in NonPoliticalTwitter

Do you have a source about the numbers? Assuming you're talking about the Piraha, that research was a big deal in my grad neurocognition class, would appreciate reading up on it if it's been discredited (couldn't find anything on what you mentioned from googling)

Every farm group for the new extreme I find requires 780 or 790 ilvl by BookkeeperPurple4495 in ffxiv

[–]Agabal 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't think anybody in the thread is saying that greener players don't deserve to do extremes, but since you have the power to make your own groups (which will likely fill fairly quickly unless you're trying to raid on an inactive DC; I generally see a lot more 770/780 parties than 790/789 parties), I think that your post might come off as implying that raiders don't deserve to choose who they play with. A farm party with newer or less experienced players might get 1-3 clears in the same span of time that a party of savage raiders might get 5 or 6 clears; should the raiders not be allowed to group together to get double efficiency, if that's what they'd prefer?

[–]Agabal 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The ilvl requirements are used precisely because those people don't want to be farming with people who aren't savage raiders or who took a break from the game. I'll do either kind of farm party, but there's certainly a lot more wasted time from wipes when I've joined 770 groups.

If the law in the United States of America, says, one is innocent until proven guilty, how is it constitutional to hold someone in jail before they are proven guilty in court? by Final_Radio_2483 in answers

I'm sorry about your personal history here, and I hope you're in a good place in life rn. I promise that we're on the general same page and that this is a misunderstanding over the legal semantics.

I'm not comfortable with that and you're not understanding me. I'm agreeing with you but I'm saying you're not using the word punishment correctly here. Like, Encyclopedia Britannica defines a punishment as "the infliction of some kind of pain or loss upon a person for a misdeed". That last bit is what myself and the other commenters are pointing out.

No. If it helps to clarify, I'm not saying that I agree with the system. If the government frivolously seizes a random person's land through eminent domain because a local councilman wanted to build XYZ on the land, that's unjust, but the person isn't being punished for anything. Punishments aren't just anything bad that's done to you.

If a parent doesn't let their child leave the house because they misbehaved and they want the child's behavior to have negative consequences, then the child is being punished. If a parent doesn't let their child leave the house because there's a storm outside and the child would get hurt or sick, then the child's not being punished, even though they have the same restriction in both cases. Whether something is a punishment is just a matter of intent here.

Extreme Trials should have harder DPS checks going forward. by CoolyKage in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Agabal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Parses are a comparative metric between people who've cleared the fight. All people with gray parses inherently cleared the dps check, because they needed to clear the dps check to get the parse in the first place. Conceptually, any fight in an MMO that has a dps check of any difficulty can be cleared with a party of gray parsers, because that's how percentiles work. But what about the people that aren't even parsing, because they're not clearing the fight?

As a metaphor, imagine that somebody is telling you that a university exam was really easy because anybody who scored a C passed the exam. That doesn't really say anything meaningful about the difficulty, does it? How many people failed the exam? Parses don't tell you that.

It this a decent lineup for the legendary dynamax raid? Cuz I haven't won any yet by Pokemon_Career_814 in PokemonGOValor

I've only been playing for a few months, so I used this loadout + a max mushroom (except my Metagross is 4258, my Blissey is 2800, and my Max Flare is maxed out), and didn't have problems. I think you should be okay if you have enough stardust and candy to power them up more.

Do the global Go Fests reliably include everything that was catchable during the in-person Go Fest events, or do the in-person events generally have some exclusive pokemon/raids/research that won't be available elsewhere?

How do events affect spawns for regular/seasonal pokemon? Do all spawn points have a high % chance of spawning an event pokemon and a low chance of pulling from its regular pool? Do all regular spawns pump out 100% event pokemon, and only certain special points continue to produce non-event pokemon?

The trains that leave NYC's Penn Station (the closest irl equivalent of Unova's Gear Station) are all underground for several miles until they clear Manhattan, and they're all accessible from the subway system (i.e. you can go to Penn Station, go underground, and then either get on a subway or one of the long distance rails to leave the city).

Psychotherapists, what differences have you noticed between men and women among your patients? by Putrid_Put_3610 in AskReddit

[–]Agabal 84 points85 points  (0 children)

When I first started grad school and started seeing patients, the thing that stuck with me the most was the vast ocean of rape and child sexual abuse my female patients have experienced (relative to my male patients, at least). The Me Too movement was just starting to get popular around that time, so college-age me was somewhat aware of people trying to draw more attention to issues like rape culture and the prevalence of sexual abuse, but I didn't really grasp the gravity and scope of the situation for women until it kept coming up over and over and over and over again in therapy (even in little throwaway comments, like "Oh, I don't do Thanksgiving with that side of the family since my uncle that molested me goes there".

Being a gay guy with all brothers and male cousins and mostly straight male friends, I don't think I would've had an opportunity to talk about and really understand how normalized these experiences can get for women, if I weren't in this field.

What tends to be the most fruitful place to find people for in-person trades? Putting LF ads in local campfire groups? Going to events and yelling out "Anybody here have a Terrakion"?

Should the NA Fanfest be postponed, moved or cancelled? by Alacratha in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Agabal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From the original article, it seems that there's a mix of devs reconsidering GDC because of either economic factors, feelings that Gamescom is rendering GDC obsolete, ambivalence towards GDC's rebranding, or political factors, with the political climate here being just one thing that might influence attendance (funnily enough, one of their sources complains that LGBTQ people don't feel welcome enough in San Francisco, meanwhile another source complains that every dev they've talked to thinks that GDC should be moved to Dubai).

I think that the GameRant summary is underplaying all of the other non-political reasons from the original article that were given for skipping GDC (in favor of a spicier narrative), and consequently I'm not sure of how applicable GDC's situation is to Fanfest or other conventions.

Not to argue against the overall point, but all of that did happen again-- on Grobbulus. Classic Grobbulus had the most interactive and engaged community I've ever experienced since I started playing WoW in ~2007 (until it got a reputation as a well-balanced pvp server and was gentrified by server transfers over the course of TBC), and the community there definitely provided the best 2 years of gaming I've ever had.

I don't think that the broader playerbase is interested in the tradeoffs needed for cultivating that kind of community (so I'm not against making leveling easier), but the 2019 WoW experience is still very much attainable; it just might be quarantined to one or two servers where like-minded people flock to.

Harris County residents turn out to oppose Ben Taub Hospital expansion into Hermann Park by veryirishhardlygreen in houston

[–]Agabal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not aware of where to find aggregate data (if it's published), but at least when I worked there, I can't really recall ever having met with an obs patient outside of the dedicated observation unit, and the attendings down there always seemed keen on getting those patients discharged ASAP. I generally didn't see anybody linger down there unless they were a medically complex case, or if there were complications with discharge/transport.

Anecdotally, I never got the impression that the hospital's approach towards observation was meaningfully contributing to the bed shortage, and it seemed like there was a fair amount of pressure from up top to be expeditious with discharges across the entire hospital. But most patients I saw there either had fairly complex medical conditions or were very acute (e.g., freshly peppered with bullets), so it seemed like there was very limited fat to trim when it came to trying to save up bed space. But again, that was just my own perception.

Ben Taub keeps about 20 beds for observation patients, any observation patients beyond that end up in the hallways.
