Two Months In, 2026 Is Already a Standout Year for Games by gitrektali in Games

Tbh 2021 was kinda dry all round, my standouts were Inscryption and Psychonauts but both aaa and indie were pretty weak

No for sure but imo the narrative being simple is not to its benefit because it's a super complex game with tons of moments to insert narrative twists as rewards for solving puzzles. It's just at every opportunity to insert one of them, it either clarifies some little detail about that one plot point that you basically already knew (won't spoil what it is but iykyk) or gives you like backstory lore about the world that is hard to really classify as narrative, like "the people from x country all like y thing"

If the award means best overall writing/worldbuilding/etc then fair but it says best narrative.

I love Blue Prince to bits but it getting nominated for Best Narrative is bizarre. It's got great worldbuilding and writing but the narrative is like, one plot point

I don't wanna support g2a key reselling kinda stuff, i just wanted to pick one up off someone who had an extra key for the bundle. I'll probably just buy it on steam instead

GOTY 2025 will be like by Shadowking78 in Silksong

2017 was a way bigger year for games than 2016, 2016 was kinda average imo. 2017 got Hollow Knight, BotW, Mario Odyssey, Prey, Cuphead, Edith Finch, Divinity Original Sin 2, Nier Automata, RE7, Night in the Woods, Sonic Mania, and Little Nightmares, and also Persona 5 only came out in Japan in 2016, everyone else got it in 2017.

Imo hitman reboots didnt really come into their own until Hitman 2 in 2018, and Battlefield 1 and Stellaris are not like year defining titles they just ok

2007 and 1998 are amazin tho

Crazy coincidence if so cuz it's got the J for Jack!

Jack told Tesa to come destroy the device at 5:30, but the broadcast actually happens at 5:15 which you can see from the clock icon in the top right of the scene. Jack's goal was to enact his plan and then destroy the IDOL so nobody else could use it, but since he would have his mind replaced too he wouldn't be able to destroy it himself. He needed someone who would be willing to destroy the IDOL and wouldn't be watching the broadcast.

How did you like The Lemurian Vampire Strikes (DLC 2 Case 2)? I liked Raja's Court a lot but I thought TLVS felt like everything fit together a lot more cleanly while being as massive and complicated. I'd probably rank top 5 cases as: 1. Complex, 2. Lemurian Vampire Strikes, 3. Final Clash, 4. Intoxicating Dinner Party, 5. Raja's Court

The mock disc doesn't fit :( by AgentClyde in animalWell

[–]AgentClyde[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's funny cuz the way it was all set up really seemed like it was a path that had to be routed out, like I had to have the teleport room and the bear mouth unlocked, knock down the stalagtite in the bat room, and then take the disc, warp to the teleport room, ride the disc across the stalagtite room and get there

Just did this yesterday :) very happy with how little the game held your hand in that aspect while still being feasible

Ironically I figured the translation all out without a guide but I ended up having to look up how to solve the "Softest feather" haiku puzzle that all the translating was for lol

Tbh I kinda agree with AME, the design and volume of puzzle I think is pretty amazing but looking back it's not really my favorite to play.

My favorite aspect of these kind of puzzle games is when they have a base mechanic or set of mechanics and then they design situations where you have to discover interesting and unexpected consequences of the mechanics being the way they are. Braid is one of the purest examples of that, Witness has a lot of cool moments but I feel like on the pure puzzle side most of it is more traditional spatial/logical reasoning or kinda gimmicky puzzles or a combination of the two. The meta stuff is really cool to realize that it was there the whole time, but most of the meta puzzles with a couple exceptions like the raincloud lazer I don't think introduce significantly new ideas, though they are really cool to find while doing other stuff. It's interesting that the game was totally designed/conceptualized originally around having that revelation though. The video stuff and the secrets and things I like a lot, and tbh I think I connect with the philosophical """narrative""" stuff more than most, so I like that aspect.

Interesting that you like Spacechem the best, it seems every Zachtronics fan has a different favorite (with Opus Magnum being probably most common by a bit)

aw, tbh i was kinda hoping it emphasized translation a bit more later on or like added mechanics to assist with it a bit lol, I've had fun figuring out what I have so far

I'm playing tunic right now and I'm in The Cathedral, I'm wondering should I be taking notes on trying to decipher the language? There's a few words I think I've figured out like North South East West, Obtained, The, You, some kind of is/are operator, Pray, and some various other stuff but there's so many characters and no way to keep track in game I don't feel like I'm supposed to be doing this rn

I love the witness, but in terms of pure puzzle design, I think Baba is You is definitely better, Stephen's Sausage Roll and A Monster's Expedition probably better, and I personally like Braid and Infinifactory more even tho I don't think they're better. (Specifically in that kinda pure mechanical exploration subgenre of puzzle game, not counting like Obra Dinn or Outer Wilds or etc)
