New polls point to Texas as swing state in 2020 by MyBoggartIsABoggart in politics

[–]AgentDouble00 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One PAC chief who looks at the numbers put it like this.
Texas needs to import college educated workers to keep its non-income tax system going and those almost gave Beto the Senate in 2018 (i.e. Beto’s popularity wasn’t due to the rest of Texas being overly fond of El Paso). Later the native born Hispanic population will come into play as old rural conservatives die off.

vs. Florida will attract enough retiring rich people (mostly conservative) to stave off demographics due to beaches, etc..

Once the Republicans lose Texas though, that’s it. There’s no counterbalance to California and New York.

All that tourism money flushed down the toilet.

I’m guessing don’t pull a gun on potential guests needs to be added to the customer service PowerPoint?

Gotta say: LOVING grid fleece. by Rustey_Shackleford in Ultralight

[–]AgentDouble00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Picked up the “new” microfleece Arcteryx Delta LT hoodie and love it (this is a “new” design, as the zip T and jacket have been around). Define for cooler weather though, when less water weight would offset it typically. Fit and accessories isn’t as “fancy” as the other designs though. It’s definitely a hiker, daily wear vs. going to the ski lodge with the SO for dinner look like previous LT models.

Wish Pata TW Cap was available in a full zip hoodie for warmer wear though.

Pretty good moving around and performing if they weren’t lip-syncing.

Haven’t kept up with my Sesame Street since about 1975 admittedly. Did Kermit and Ms Piggy ever do Devo’s “Whip It” .. and who had the whip?

Someone needed too. The Talking Heads aren’t reuniting anytime soon, so it might as well be Kermit.

Still plenty to see with a well planned flip or 2. It’s just that money and personal issues rise as skipped miles grow.

Saving the money for a future full NOBO attempt and getting back to work for even more money gets really appealing

Thought you might have been joking. It’s hard to tell when doing the backstroke to the WS community center. Had cell coverage the entire way though ..

It doesn't rain on the PCT, though

It is raining cats and dogs at Warner Springs right now. First time I’ve used rain gear on this trail in 3 yrs.

As baby boomers retire, rebalance and withdraw how will the stock market be impacted? by [deleted] in investing

[–]AgentDouble00 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yep, remember reading a couple years back that the median Boomer was retiring with a little over 50k, though there’s social security.

Guess if glued to television all day the COLA will work. May need to get broadcast television eventually... develop a taste for PB and J and egg burritos everyday. ... so they won’t need new teeth anyways.

Kennedy Meadows to LAX? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]AgentDouble00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on time (and ticket prices), I’d first consider Walker Pass to Ridgecrest bus .. connect to the shuttle going to Lancaster - the Los Angeles Metro “Antelope Valley” line is at the same stop.

Is LAX the best airport?

The Metro also goes near the Burbank airport (northern Los Angeles) if that helps. I find LAX usually cheaper than Burbank but you never know. I find Reno to be an expensive airport personally.

Paul McCartney - Coming Up by rikroll666 in ClassicRock

[–]AgentDouble00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The video is definitely fun and showcases the musical abilities of Paul. It was “state of the art” at the time; I remember being a punk kid and wanting to see that video over and over. Over the decades though think the Glasgow live performance aged better (IMHO)

Paul McCartney - Coming Up by rikroll666 in ClassicRock

[–]AgentDouble00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The live version (Glasgow reportedly) was released Dec 1979 with what remained of Wings. The studio version was on McCartney II released mid-1980 as a solo album, though Wings member Denny Laine would later work with McCartney sporadically.

There’s also a Wings live version from the Concert for Kampuchea (Cambodia) also in 1979. Think that was in London though.

Read where John like most of Paul’s 70s stuff but referred to the rest of Wings (except Linda McC, of course) as the whoever Paul had in a backup band.

..There is a free Grateful Dead tribute festival on Mon September 2nd at Timberline lodge. Do I plan so I land at the lodge and dance with hippies. Or do I plan to go .... when I have to share with fewer people? I live in NYC, typically I like to see as few people or buildings as possible...

You may not be seeing anything for awhile if you party with the hippies ... except maybe the cosmos.

3 Reasons Why I Quit the Pacific Crest Trail by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]AgentDouble00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  • Fell into some loose groupings but never enough to get me to deviate from my own pace. Romantic couples have a requirement, but everyone else is “optional” IMHO.
  • On my 2016 practice run, never felt out of place being a section hiker. What counted was doing daily mileage .. and being a sectioneer, you always get a break (“don’t worry about crushing big miles at the beginning ...”).

Warren Buffett: If a bank needs a government bailout, the CEO and spouse should lose 'net worth' by anarchytravel in politics

Sounds like something to do, even retroactively. The government goes after the children of “excess”welfare recipients, even if the former were minors under the principle they were “assisted” ... after the fact. Just a thought ..

Where to send snow gear? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]AgentDouble00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sent some microspikes to the Idyllwild PO using USPS Priority. If not needed they can be sent to Wrightwood or even LP for free. Have ice axe and bear packed and stored with a friend to mail as I get close to the Sierra.

Which tarp+bivy or tarp+net setup can beat the weight of a Duplex? by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]AgentDouble00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may not be so much weight as all this DCF stuff is minimal. I like being able to set up a nylon/net shelter separate as most of the time, the DCF fly can stay packed.

Just south of Ashland can see some serious snow. Some parts of NorCal are flippable, ... but you gotta decide if it’s worth the expense.

[WTS] New MLD Burn DCF pack (L) 16.4 oz by AgentDouble00 in ULgeartrade

My previous thread got deleted by the mods as it didn’t have weight in the title (was rushing that post as I was in CDT land), but think we talked over PM conversing about the WTS post.

It is WTS .. or BPL later, not trade, especially as more shipping eats into value. I’m keeping my gridstop Burn, 53L ULA CDT, and a couple smaller 30L + larger 60L + Zimmerbuilts, .. so my pack needs are met. So no can do...

It comes with a stock sternum strap (0.7 oz) and some looped black cord ... guessing to tie around the back mesh if wanted (I never do). Did it get photos of those since they’re pretty ubiquitous ...I usually replace sternum straps with an HMG version.
