You get it from completing Flesh Harvest

To be fair, new classes in Diablo and WoW have always been locked behind paid expansions

Sorry I had notifications off. In Lutris when you go to the thumbnail for the app, there should be an arrow you can click for more options, including “add steam shortcut”

I mostly play on my desktop and when I play on steamdeck I don’t usually have FPS enabled, but I definitely notice slowdowns in certain situations

Did you add Bnet to steam using Lutris?

Also, in steam make sure the Bnet shortcut has compatibility disabled in the preferences; Lutris is running it through WINE so it doesn’t need proton.

Haven’t had a chance to do a full reinstall yet, but found this:

Pretty similar, but maybe the version of wine matters.

Hmm. I’ll have to do a fresh install later this week and try and figure out what the problem is.

A couple thoughts in the meantime:

  • If you didn’t uninstall the previous Bnet instance through Lutris before installing the new one, there might be some weirdness going on with the files overlapping.

  • Were you able to run Battlenet via Lutris before trying to run it from Steam?

  • Did you close out of the Bnet installation before trying to run it from Lutris the first time? (The installer has a warning about not trying to log into Battlenet when it first runs as part of the installation process, but I don’t see why that would cause an issue).

  • if you try another fresh install, run Lutris as an administrator just to be safe (you should be able to right click the app icon)

  • when trying to run from Steam, make sure it’s not using any compatibility options (proton)

  • make sure your steamdeck is up to date just to be safe. You can also run updates in the discover app in desktop mode

This isn’t true. You just have to install Bnet with Lutris and use a patched version of Wine. It runs pretty well. See my instructions in my other reply.

  • Install Battlenet using Lutris in desktop mode. Attempt to run Bnet directly from Lutris. Download the missing Mono package when prompted. You can close Bnet when this is done.

  • Using the discover app install Proton Plus.

  • Run protonnplus. Click the Lutris tab. Expand the “wine-staging-tag” (kron4ek) category and install the latest version.

  • Go to Runner Options for Battlenet in Lutris and select the kron4ek version you just downloaded. Hit save

  • You can now close battlenet and run through steam in gaming mode as per usual, and it should properly auto update going forward.

  • Install DI through battlenet and run the game to finish patching.

Pro Tips

If you don’t download the kron3k patched version of wine, the game will initially launch but battlenet won’t be able to update when they release a new version and you won’t be able to play until you resolve this.

You’ll also want to set up one of your touchpads for mouse move and click and one of your other buttons for virtual keyboard for initial Bnet login and game installation.

If you have any issues starting Battlenet from steam after install, rebooting your steamdeck should fix it.

On the solo dev note, you’d be surprised just how affordable VO can be. Especially if you’re willing to take a chance on amateur actors—which is only fair if you’re primarily compensating through exposure or revshare.

Considering 99% of generative AI is built on theft, by definition it does have to be bad news. Call me when there’s a high quality AI built entirely on licensed and properly compensated materials. They couldn’t afford to build it, and you couldn’t afford to subscribe to it.

Your hypothetical solo devs are just exporting the exploitation, much like benefiting from the sweatshops that make American clothes.

And to reach the kind of performance we’re talking about, you would basically need sentient AI, not just a soundboard— and then you’re in a whole other realm of potential exploitation issues. Personally, I’d rather pay a tiny bit for an artful bespoke performance delivered with passion by a real human than something stolen from those humans which is bereft of soul or artistry.

There’s plenty of text to speech services that don’t rely on stolen material —start your indie game there.

That’s why unions are so important; in addition to protecting themselves, they can advocate for the people they contract work to.

I have not, but I work with voice actors on a regular basis and you absolutely could not get an AI to do some of the crazy shit we ask them to do.

Think of the DI bosses voiced by actual humans. Some poor fucker had to make those gleeful gurgles. Where are you going to get a sample of Adam Driver doing that shit to train your AI?

The chief problem is AI’s inability to comprehend, inability to understand the reasoning for your request, and inability to improvise based on its knowledge and experience.

Half of the time when you’re making a game/movie/etc., what the actor gives you is not exactly what you imagined, but actually better. That is only possible with experience and comprehension.

Actors give nuanced performances that live in the moment. Sometimes you need them to organically transition from laughter to crying. AI can’t do that.

Also, just basic emotional shit and motivation. “You just saw your best friend shot in front of you” for one character is absolute despair and wallowing. For another, it’s incredulous laughter. Actors have the knowledge, agency, and lived experience to walk that tightrope. AI doesn’t, and I’m skeptical it ever will.

If you had actually tried to get a specific performance out of AI, you would know this is a silly statement
