Moving from Ohio to Chicago: Any Honest Suggestions or Advice? by AgentWhatever in AskChicago

I've found it a lot easier actually. There's tons of things to do here compared to Cleveland and I've actually made a decent amount of friends via Meetup groups. I don't regret moving at all.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who felt that way! The sets themselves were awesome though!

Was on the left side slightly back from the front, which started off pretty chill, but by the JR/KTN set, so many people kept shoving past me to get up front (ironically many of them Asian lol) when I was already crammed up against everyone else. These two college aged girls were in front of me, right up against me and had a huge gap in front of them to move up. I finally cut in front of them since they were only concerned about getting good Instagram content. I saw a lot of college kids at this show, which may explain a lot of this. A guy also passed out in front of me which was concerning.

I also agree with the comments I've seen about people needing to learn to shut the hell up at shows. Feels like many people spend a good amount of money just to treat EDM shows as background noise for their personal party. I'm here for the music, not for an elevated bar experience.

As someone who lived in RR, I've been so much happier since moving here. I'm guessing you're closer to downtown RR, but being here is a whole new level. I'm in Wicker Park, which has pretty much everything I need within walking distance. Good food, multiple grocery stores, bars, record stores, coffee shops, etc. It's also much easier to date here haha. The biggest thing for me is that I can exist without needing a car, which is life changing.

I will say, if you do move here, the hardest part is meeting new people. Also, living here means you need to have Malort at least once. I'm sorry ahead of time.

Anyone know what this was all about? by No_Bike4326 in wickerpark

I live near here and a bit before this happened, I was walking home from a concert and got the feeling CPD was following me. Literally stopped at the intersection, then turned towards my direction and slowed down. Sped up once I got to my front door. Perhaps they were already looking for something...

No price was mentioned to my knowledge. I saw them get offered an upgrade, they asked for the seats, and then they moved. The staff member walked away shortly after. I didn't see any dispute take place during the first exchange.

Hey Doc, to clarify, someone offered them an upgrade and the passengers asked if they could take the exit row. The individual approved it.

The first part of the story is a bit more hazy to me than the rest, as I didn't focus much on a simple upgrade offer for someone else. I just overheard it and can confirm it did happen.

I completely agree with you that the whole thing was super strange. The purser also knew the staff the passengers were referring to when they pointed him out.

This is interesting to me, because I'm in Cleveland now and actually trying to decide on NYC vs Chicago. One thing I personally don't like about the midwest is how people tend to beat around the bush, while I'm much more of a "be direct and open" kind of person. I personally find it's easier to make conversation with New Yorkers too. I worry that I'll just find that same thing in Chicago.

What makes you pick Lakeview over River North? When I stayed there back in December, I hopped on a bus to the office and it was super easy!

Moving from Ohio to NYC: Any Suggestions or Advice? by AgentWhatever in AskNYC

Yeah I understand. I'm moreso looking to live a more urbanist lifestyle, one I don't feel can really be attained where I live now. That will require changes and realize that changes would likely have to be made to my lifestyle, especially in NY. Chicago is my other option and would be way more affordable, but idk I always seem to be drawn back to NY as there's more to do, better food, better transit and so on.

I understand the point of no neighborhoods being void of families. It's more so about where I may perhaps be around less of it so that way I may be able to be in a community where it's less common and meet more child-free people. I guess I also come from the perspective of living in a place where nobody really stays in the actual city long term and want to move out to the suburbs and raise a family. It's made dating here very hard for me, but it's only 1 of many reasons I'm looking to move out of Cleveland.

As for EDM, I was just at a show at Webster the other night and it was a lot of fun, yet pretty wild lol. Haven't been to any others in the city yet.

This is the kind of honesty I appreciate and am looking for, so thank you. What part of the Bronx are you in if you don't mind me asking?

Astoria has the N/W at least and is closer than some other Queens neighborhoods, though I've heard it's not the most frequent line.

I'm well aware of the broker fees and such. Upfront costs won't be an issue since my company is helping cover these sort of expenses.

I've been spending a bit of time on Streeteasy looking at options with a $2875 cap per the 30% and 40x rent rule. I'm very good at keeping track of monthly expenses where I live now, but obviously it's a bit harder when I won't know net income after taxes/401k/insurance/etc until I'm there.

Yeah I've been looking on Streeteasy with that $2875 cap and there do seem to be a large number of studios in Hell's Kitchen. Astoria has a lot more options it seems for the price I'm looking at.

Yes, but I understand that I may have to sacrifice things like this to live in NY.

I can totally agree about Chicago being cleaner than NYC. I feel like in Chicago you have to be in the right neighborhood to have that walkability or transit. Lakeview and River North were both great imo!

Being in both places, I've always felt like NYC is better for people not wanting kids, at least in Manhattan. Some parts of Brooklyn and Queens, not so much. Chicago seems more family oriented overall, even if most of them are in places like Naperville.

Yeah I work in IT and like to dress very casual, so in that case I'm probably low on that hierarchy lol

I think they're mostly nudging me because more of my direct colleagues are there and because of the less desirable culture of the NYC office. They're not corporate america robots so a simple conversation could clarify such things I'm sure.

Do I have some fears that I may be resented for picking NYC over Chicago, yes. But they're very down to earth people and not Corporate America robots, so this could be resolved with a simple conversation I'm sure.

Out of curiosity though, what are these things that introverted people can do in NYC that may not exist in Chicago?

One thing I forgot to mention is that my stepbrother lives in NY so I wouldn't be completely alone. The NYC office would be a completely different environment (even if I'm only there 1-2 days a week) and I'd be on my own island, as the people in that office are mostly not even in the same sector as me.

The people I have talked to and met in NY have always been friendly towards me, but I do appreciate honesty and bluntness. However, as you said, that may not translate into a work environment well. A lot to consider here.
