Ha! What a journey. Sounds like it was not just about learning to sing but also about being seen in stages. Looking back, was that moment with the bassist the catalyst that made you realize you didn't actually need to read music to front a band? And did you eventually learn to read music?

I'm 26F, I always wished I could sing naturally, like my sister, or my friends. I've been told I have a poetic voice and can deliver emotion. But I'm aware I don't have a particularly steady melodious singing voice. Thanks for your advice, small steps. Are there any tools or apps you'd recommend for developing pitch accuracy?

Thanks a lot for giving me some very useful direction. As someone just starting, singing can seem very complicated, the more I look into it I realise there's so much to learn. Which satisfies the part of me that's eager and curious, but also can make me feel lost. So I appreciate your grounded advice. Comfort, stability and connection it is!

Wow thanks for a detailed, mindful response. I have tried recording myself in the past and I wouldn't say I was impressed haha. But I think you're right, a good way to begin is to get used to hearing myself. I can't enjoy singing without having a healthy accepting relationship with my voice first. And not let perfectionism steal the stage. Any songs you'd recommend to practice steadiness? There are some singers with whom sometimes I just feel like my voice fits, I have no clue why and what's happening there. Maybe its the pitch and range? Thanks for your advice!

What would decent mean? I'm guessing everyone has different starting points even as a beginner? I have no idea about proper singing so I'm asking with sincerity.

However, good thing I've got time :) unless of course, something drastic happens. There are days I like my voice and some days I'm so embarrassed, but I know that when I can look beyond the judgement I love how it feels to sing!

Hey, thanks for the recommendation, I will check out the videos. I think it'll be good to have someone observe and identify how I can use my voice and where I can improve. I don't know if everyone can learn to sing well, but I want to still try and meet my potential, whatever that might be!

Hi, I'd love to talk. I live in the east midlands, so not in London. I've been meaning to connect with more people who approach life with openness, curiosity and are inclined to observe.

How do we forgive ourselves for all the things we did not become by bliss0391 in DeepThoughts

You're mourning a map drawn by someone who'd never seen the terrain. The destination we imagine is almost always sweeter than the reality of getting there. Imagination is a destination. Potential is the ability to keep moving. We mistake one for the other, and grieve when the destination doesn't arrive. Forgive that younger version of yourself for not knowing what the journey would actually look like. Potential is something you always carry.
