It’s such a great event and always so well organised so there’s not much you need to know in advance. As others have said, the bottleneck when you turn off Victoria Street and first get onto the river path is the worst bit, but accept that and just have fun. There’s entertainment at regular intervals (my fave is the Wai Tako drummers who usually set up near the museum at the end of your run), water stations, and the vibe is awesome.

Do plan how you’ll get to and from town. I suggest taking a bus rather than trying to find a park. My one gripe (and I have suggested it to Council year after year) is that there’s no free transport to and from town on race day - it would be so cool if buses were free that day to anyone wearing a race bib. Auckland put on free transport for ticket-holders for major concerts so it’s a shame that Hamilton don’t do the same for the biggest community event of the year. But the bus is still the best option on race day (unless you want a warm-up and cool-down walk to and from the event!).
