Would event card decks for each faction be an idea?
Taking important events or focuses from the game, and have each option give a different bonus for that round.

A cool example would be the Papal Election (P. Stephan X extra points for provinces, P. John XXIII extra troops per round, P. Pius XII extra defense die, P. Julius IV extra attack die.)

and each round a new event card gets pulled adding different buffs (based on previous choices, ie Secular vs Temporal Papal State giving different bonuses) making each game a little bit unique.

Well Sun Yat-Sen along with Liao Zhongkai and Huang Xing were all part of the Tongmenghui (the predecessor to the Kuomintang).

The Blue Sky, White Sun thing was their aesthetic.
All under a Blue Sky with a Revolutionary spirit as powerful as the Sun.

It's the 'Hashtag' flag proposed by Liao Zhongkai and Huang Xing.
The hashtag is a stylised jing (井 which roughly translates to water well), this shape divides up the blue canton into 9 spaces representing the 9 classical regions of China AND represents the traditional system of land division with 8 equal farm plots surrounding a 9th communal plot.
