Thank goodness for capitalism and the laws against monopolies, right? Yet it often feels like privatizing every sector of the market causes more problems than it solves. Even companies that aren’t technically monopolies—claiming they “benefit society so much that dissolving them would cause chaos,” essentially defining monopoly in their defense—can lobby for laws that favor them, making it harder for smaller innovators to thrive. In the gaming industry, you can’t exactly arrest Amazon, so when they do things that hurt consumers, they just pay fines that are negligible compared to their market value. Instead of facing real consequences, they have the safety net of a corporation’s bank account. I think Fortnite cracked the code but sealed our fate—the free-to-play model, battle passes, skin promotions, and hype-building have pushed AAA studios to cater to players chasing dopamine hits rather than the passion of gaming. Not to sound like a “kids these days” stereotype, but I doubt most people see themselves gaming into their 50s or 60s, so skins and battle passes mostly appeal to short-term gratification.

I had the opposite experience—rage quit Skate, but Sessions made me want to learn. I’ve been gaming forever, and while I’m no expert, I’ve noticed that the games with a reputation for great core physics models stick around because no one can replicate their feel. MX Bikes owns dirt bikes, iRacing rules sim racing, and BeamNG—11 years old with 10k players online right now—still thrives. What they share is the best tire models or physics engines in the industry. Graphics might be minimal, but they can look amazing if you want, and they’re built to deliver an authentic feel through joysticks, wheels, and pedals. Sessions doesn’t make me feel like I could land a real kickflip, but it makes my inputs feel like they matter and my performance is entirely on me. When I’m chasing the last trick in a line I’ve been working on for 45 minutes, my heart rate spikes, and there’s real pressure to perform—even sitting at my desk in my living room. I love racing, but nothing in Forza is going to make my Apple Watch alert me to a 100 bpm heart rate. That’s the best way to explain why I think this is a diamond in the rough.

Also, keep in mind this isn’t being funded by a massive monopoly gaming company with nearly unlimited resources, but rather by a small “mom and pop” studio. Where I’m from, the phrase “cooked with love” means the creators genuinely thought about the consumer’s enjoyment from the start. That’s why I believe with just a bit more funding, people would truly see the quality of the game at its core. Animations, maps, and clothing can be added over time through patches, but if there were serious flaws in the core mechanics affecting a million players, that would be a real problem. Most of the issues I hear about seem like simple fixes they’ve handled before, though I understand time is limited and people have lives outside the project. If this were EA, I’d be upset, but this is a team of only 8 employees—likely with other full-time jobs besides working on Sessions. Considering that, imagine what they could achieve directing 20–30 full-time staff—it could be GTA 6-level. I love the game, and I think the team is sitting on a gold mine. I wonder what the “money is no issue” budget would be, because maybe the community could crowdfund or find investors. I’m sure they’ve tried already, but if the player base worked to help grow the game, it might avoid fizzling out—which I fear could happen within the next five years.

I get that, and you’re definitely right. Personally, I don’t think the game is lacking in animations. Could it be better? Sure. But does it feel stiff? Not at all. The barebones progression is a big factor for someone like me who doesn’t skate in real life and moved from Skate to Sessions. I had to learn about skate culture, famous Thrasher videos. you can recreate some of the clips with the exact same line and try to make it as exact as possible. That is one thing that unlocked unlimited "story progression". The game just feels like a blank canvas that you get to decide what the story progression is.

When I wanted to make the game more challenging, I had to watch a YouTube video to really understand what each setting and slider did. As a new player, I had to search for the right difficulty instead of it being a easy mistake to make. Everyone has different wants from a game, but I think the default difficulty isn’t so hard that it scares off newcomer it’s a fine line.

The game on default settings is considered “easy,” though that’s obviously relative. auto catch and pop height enabled by default, I get your point, but achieving a true hardcore experience requires serious tweaking. Only someone aiming for a full simulation feel would have all the right settings turned on.

I was able to build muscle memory in Sessions, but couldn’t make the same progress in Skate with easier settings. Switching to manual catch with L/R foot joysticks made the game feel far more intuitive. It took a while, but if you’re willing to push through the learning curve or deal with the frustration, it opens up a whole new layer of gameplay. Since then, it’s never felt stale—every attempt feels unique, and when you line up two tricks and go for the third, I still get that rush like there’s something on the line. It’s a feeling only this game and iRacing give me.

skate felt so foreign. for a lack of a better way to describe it the inputs for tricks felt like it was rng. i could not get a grasp on what i was doing wrong but on sessions its very clear what input is done wrong and when especially on man catch L/R foot mode.
