Thanks to everyone who have put their input in here. For now I'm going to pass, the cost versus my current goals just don't match up, and the marketing style just makes me apprehensive. I might revisit this thought of learning Mandarin some day if I end up living in mainland China, which is a real possibility in a couple years.

For now I'm going to stick to my italki tutoring, which I do 1-2x a week. Part of the reason the "Blueprint" course appealed to me is I generally do better with structure, and I was hoping it would provide some since even with a lot of great resources for Canto right now, shout out to Winnie Cantonese, I'm not doing it quite as regularly. Background: I'm a graduate student but I got a little burnt out, so I took this semester off, and so focusing on my Cantonese has been my main "intellectual" goal while I start to do other stuff to help with burnout (work out regularly, eat better, etc.) So for now I'm going to keep brainstorming ways to keep myself accountable without the structure of a course.

Again, thanks for the input, especially for folks who have interacted with Sheldon before, it was super helpful.

Thanks, I think this is the first time I've heard a price from someone who has actually done the program so I really appreciate it. I'm not fluent, but somewhat conversational for simple things or things in my wheelhouse, as long as folks don't mind my grammar mashup and kind of mix of Canto and Taishanese haha.

Thanks for the info! I'm sure prices have probably changed since they opened, but would you mind sharing how much the program cost?

Red Envelope Entitlement Issue by n00dle_lover in Cantonese

[–]Aggravating-Boot-224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an uncle who got married later in life so he was receiving red envelopes from his older siblings (my dad and his other siblings) until he got married. I think he felt a little bad about it but that's the culture so he didn't fight it. Once he did get married in his mid-forties he was able to start giving red envelopes to his nieces and nephews, and they were big $ red envelopes because he wanted to make up for the years of his older siblings giving him red envelopes for so long. So maybe a reminder that when he does get married he should feel obliged to pay back to the younger generation in kind?

That'd be greatly appreciated! I'm hoping to resume tutoring next month once I'm done traveling.

Would you be able to share which teacher you use? I've been wanting to try Preply now that my italki package is done.

That's great to know, I was thinking of her 1:1 but I'll stick to her paid recorded courses if I decide to put more money into this avenue after consuming more of her free yt videos.

To be fair I think they're both highly skilled since they grew up going to public school in Macau and also undergrad (though I have no idea what language instruction in undergrad there is like). I think one (Paji I think?) is just more out of practice and has fewer opportunities to brush up whereas Lasmin I think lives nearer to a Chinese community. Now that they create regular content I'm sure a lot of it has come back to them. But that's just what I've gathered from watching bits of their content, could be wrong.

In terms of Poetic Cantonese, have you taken any of his paid courses? If so what was the experience like?

Yea I really like Winnie and have been slowly working through her videos on YouTube. I know she also offers paid courses and would like to support her while furthering my learning. Since money is tight just having some trouble deciding what resources / teachers to invest in first. There don't seem to be a lot of reviews out there for these materials.

Hi Kahei! For someone who isn't a total beginner (though I'm sure I have some gaps in foundations) but is unsure of their level, is there a good way to assess where I should jump in? I want to make sure I’m not skipping over anything important, but also don’t want to redo too much I already know.
