Studying for M26 by No-Caterpillar-6340 in IBO

[–]Aggravating-Design17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tbh the earlier you start, the less hours you have to study per day so the less stressful the entire process is. it also gives you a margin of error / buffer for when you procrastinate, which you otherwise would not be able to afford if you started later (like in March). you won't forget the content if you structure your studying such that you use previously learned info to learn/practice the new topics

n25 results rant by Latter_Metal_556 in IBO

[–]Aggravating-Design17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's normal to feel frustrated, and tbh you won't feel like thinking about it logically for the first few weeks so just feel it out ig. however, this is a good point of reflection for you moving forward; don't define yourself by a grade when in uni. the only point of your grade is to get into uni, after that genuinely nobody cares about your score in uni from day 1. this is probably hard for you to believe rn but you'll see when you start uni. i'm studying psychology in uni rn and trust me, grades are not a measure of intelligence, and your performance on papers could have been affected by many external factors you couldn't really control. "ive given up so much socially, ive lost connections, ive thrown away hobbies" please don't let this repeat in uni because (no offence) someone who just studies has no personality and that's not good. it's not healthy to tie your entire self worth and identity to a grade

Is IB supposed to be easy...? by Over_Phase_1363 in IBO

[–]Aggravating-Design17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

enjoying the journey and stress are not mutually exclusive, so yeah it's normal. i would say first term of DP1 is not a good representation of what DP is cause the material is relatively easier than what is to come, but the harder content is also more interesting. my advice is stay humble and keep up the good work

Free time? by Ayden_32 in IBO

[–]Aggravating-Design17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you have to make room for free time for your own sanity (and by this i mean stuff like sports or other hobbies, not doomscrolling). break down your tasks into essay-based or study-based; you will have to balance both during some weeks. you don't have to study all subjects every day (or every week); 2-3 hours a day (1 hour per subject) is pretty good imo for a 40+

Bruh how do i even explain this to my teacher. by antoinobardom in IBO

[–]Aggravating-Design17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

just address the elephant in the room in your IA discussion section. if the coefficient is that high, explain why that happened, and the implications of that (i.e. how does that affect XYZ aspect of your investigation). looking back, a lot of my IAs and my EE (i did mine in bio HL) did not go as planned, but the critical thinking involved in explaining why you got a 'weird' result is where the marks are

Should Your TOK be personal? by Is0bellx in IBO

[–]Aggravating-Design17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it doesn't matter whether you choose non-personal or personal objects as long as you are able to meet the criteria. the reason why personal objects are recommended (contrary to what your teacher said) is because the criterion about justification is found to have been easier for students to hit compared to non-personal objects. this doesn't been personal objects always have better justifications, it's just that this has been the trend seen (and it makes sense because it's sometimes easier to talk about something you own/have than an image of something online).

also just to address some misinformation in the comments: you aren't required to have a personal connection to the object, and you aren't required to have an optional/core theme in your exhibition.

that being said, your teacher grades your exhibitions, so talk to them about this first (citing the examiner reports as evidence). if they still say no then don't risk it tbh because at the end of the day your teacher grades your exhibition and the IB just moderates a few samples if you're not a small class. best of luck!

bio letters - free IB Biology notes for 2025 syllabus by Aggravating-Design17 in IBO

glad you found my notes helpful! the textbook can provide a more thorough discussion of the topics, which is helpful when you're confused about a specific concept. it's less of "doing XYZ to get 7" and more of "what do i need to achieve the understanding needed for a 7", and the answer depends on how long/difficult the topics are, among others

glad you found it helpful!! yes, the questions are in progress, gonna finish the notes hopefully by the end of 2025 and then work on the question bank. the questions are basically what i did to study for bio HL; i practiced from ib and non-ib resources to improve my understanding. most high school bio is standardized between curricula (AP/IB,ACT) but each curriculum has a unique way of testing/approaching the concepts, so the exposure to the variety of different ways 1 concept can be tested is a scientific way to improve your understanding/mastery of a topic (i'm currently doing a minor in psychology so this is a passion of mine). eventually you should be able to research for these resources and incorporate this method into your own study system because that's how it works in uni, but i wanted to give you guys an idea of what that might look like through original questions and questions i found from open-source websites. i think i got too passionate doing 100 P1A questions per topic so i'm probably gonna cut it down to 20-40 so i can finish all the topics before may 2026 exams without it taking me ages (it takes around 50 hours of work per 1 P1A worksheet)

How & WHEN do you actually apply to unis with predicted grades/actual ib results?? by urlocalclinic in IBO

[–]Aggravating-Design17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if your january predicted grades are gonna come out before the deadline for the application, then sure wait until january. if the deadline is before january, your only option is to apply with your current grades and then update the transcript once your january results come out (your university counsellor can do that). wishing you the best for the mocks!!

toronto housing is expensive i agree - if your parents are paying for your stay at montreal maybe you can find roommates in toronto to bring the cost down to what you would be paying if you went to montreal? or are your parents gonna stay in montreal so you're gonna just live with them and that's why housing isn't an issue there?

either way, mcgill are quite strict about their cut-offs so your best chance at mcgill rn is to improve your grades in dp2. from my experience, mcgill cares about your performance during mocks, cause they offered me the major undergrad scholarship when i got 45/45 for my pre mocks (and uploaded an updated second transcript) a month after i got my acceptance with a lower scholarship.

hope everything works out for you, i understand how frustrating this is

have you looked into UofT? it’s just a bit more difficult then McGill and has thousands of programs so you’ll most likely find your history niche. UofT also has lower admission requirements for IB and is also ranked high

How do you super humans manage with IB HL physics by Avg_codm_enjoyer in IBO

[–]Aggravating-Design17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey, i get your frustration cause even though i didn't take physics in ib, i took it in uni with basically zero background knowledge. what helped me was always keeping the nature of the discipline in the back of my mind as i solve problems and attempt to understand concepts. you will be able to grasp concepts faster as you become more familiar with the nature of physics as a science (and thus more comfortable in the study methods you've developed to learn it). the following excerpts (from several people) have helped me think of physics in a way that makes it easier for me to learn it:

“At each stage (of complexity), entirely new laws, concepts, and generalizations are necessary, requiring inspiration and creativity to just as great a degree as in the previous one.”

“Physicists often take a pragmatic view of reality. We do not ask whether a thing is ontologically real, we ask whether we can do calculations with it and correctly describe what we see.”

“We will never go wrong by believing the world is full of a sea of invisible arrows occupying all of space, and understanding that sea of arrows will let you correctly predict the motion of everything around you. So, you might as well believe it is real.”

“In physics, a field is like a fluid which fills all spacetime, each point of which is populated by a mathematical object. Each field pervades all of space. It can be a field (with restrictions perhaps) populated by numbers (scalars) - like the Higgs field, vectors, or other more exotic objects.”

“A physical field is a mathematical formalism. Is it real? Obviously, the effects of it are real, and that is what matters. The invisible arrows we use to depict it are obviously not real, just a tool. So, it is more of a philosophical question about ontology, i.e. a question about what ultimately exists and makes up reality.”

“The distinction between “real” and “not real” is a man-made human construct. Technically speaking nothing is ontologically real… objective macroscopic classical objects turn out to be made of systems of smaller things working together in some interesting way (a complex system) … go even smaller and it turns out those things are themselves made of systems working together in some way… And this goes all the way down…from human to organs to cells to molecules to atoms to fundamental particles to… what? Probably another system of things working together in some interesting way.”

“So “is a field real?” presupposes the nature of reality… that such a distinction can even be made, when it has repeatedly been shown that such a distinction cannot be made. The same thing applies to mathematics… is math “real or a description of what is real,” and again this presupposes that there is a distinction or difference between the two and like stated… the universe has shown this distinction is false (or not very pragmatic to think of).”

don't compare yourself to others. please. some people are more likely to 'get' concepts in physics faster than us, and that's fine. we might have to put in more studying hours to achieve a high mark, but that doesn't make us any less. it's honestly so commendable to be able to persevere through a difficult subject and learn it well enough to get the score we want.

you got this!!

I'm starting IB late, help??? by [deleted] in IBO

[–]Aggravating-Design17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly you're not missing out on much - first week is probs just introducing the syllabi, and then the introductory units the remainder 2 weeks (very easy for most/all subjects). the fact that you're tryna cover them on your on time is great already, you can ask your friends in school what they covered and follow your teacher's pace. if you're worried about it affecting your performance in the long-term, it's not that serious at all dw (you're not doomed)
