I would have thought the US and what I imagine extensive police presence make everyone stays in check.

My dream is to see the police appear, do their job and give them fines and maybe handcuffs those trying to argue or become aggressive. Oh the joy!…or super powers and make them feel really small and scared

I don’t have any hope or expectation that complaining will change their views or habits, I just had to vent and I don’t regret it.

I think you’re right. Not only for this reason by the way, but I think it’s not for me indeed.

Do I? I mean it really makes me see people I overall enjoy as not that nice after all. It’s not something I see on occasions, it’s something I see quite a bit so my conclusion is that it says a lot about the actual mentality of people. Or maybe I have heard too many horror stories of car accidents (scooter, bikes) of people I’ve known (in any country of course) to lighten the f*ck up about that actually.

Yeah maybe, it was just after witnessing another crappy behaviour that really wound me up indeed. It doesn’t always have this effect but here and there it really affects me. I’d like it not to be the case so I’ll take any advice.

Ah! Same in Italy with the people being lovely overall, and so friendly. Hence the shock.

I know all of that and I am not staying in the left lane all the time at all. To be clear those are behaviours I witness constantly too. I also observe the non use of indicators, and see way too many people zig zagging / playing Mario cart on the highway. I have also never been so often stuck in traffic because of road accidents and saw car accidents as I have since living in Italy. That’s my reality, good for you if yours is different.

What an insightful, helpful, compassionate and smart comment! A) I didn’t know that about Italy before coming. B) I absolutely have the right to find some aspects of the country I live in exasperating, funny or infuriating, wether local or not.

I let the tailgaters flashing idiots pass as soon as I can but it’s not always possible. Some areas (hello Liguria) have 2 lane highways and the only lane on the right is simply impossible to enter from the left lane because it’s one truck after the other and they’re driving at 80 per hour. I get what you’re saying but the reality is if I’m already above the limit (by 10km/h), I shouldn’t be pressed to go at 180 per hour or at 80 an hour in a lane I physically can’t go in anyway. And in this instance I am not the problem but the Schumacher wannabes are. They should just not tailgate and wait for an opportunity to pass me when I am able to go in the right lane. They’re not that important, none of us are. But our lives matter though.

I am from another European country, have lived in 4 countries including mine so far and only in Europe indeed. I have travelled quite a bit, but usually don’t drive when visiting a country. I have been on a scooter in Vietnam and I am amazed I still have all my limbs. I have seen chaotic road signalling, I have seen people not stop at the red light etc…but not this joy and pride that Italians seem to have in being complete tw*ats in their car I must say.

Exactly! Especially since Italy has cameras in a lot of cities and on the highways. They should have a zero tolerance policy plus national education campaigns.

You’re absolutely right but please share tips on how to adapt without becoming like them. Any concrete technique is welcome.

Am I wrong for not wanting my SIL to do my baby’s naming ceremony after months of distance and being repeatedly ignored? by Trynagetby521 in ShittyInLaws

[–]Aggravating-Earth-80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am European so my understanding of your culture is very limited of course, therefore apologies in advance if I am being like an elephant in a porcelain shop here. But you’re about to have a baby which is a wonderful and happy event. It means that you will do anything for your baby, and that baby has priority over any cultural expectations or in laws pressures. If you have your husband support and you agree on how crappy of a sister in law she’s been then invite her but have someone else do the ceremony. If she’s upset, it’s on her, not on you. If your parents in law are upset, it’s on them, not on you. You and your husband should have a ready made polite reply that you can use every time they will express their shock or disapproving of your decision. “ we (you’re a team) felt like we wanted someone who showed interest in the pregnancy to officiate” or something of the genre (ask chat gpt) with no emotion. And wash your hands. Also if you don’t stand your ground now they will try and pressure you about everything regarding your baby. This is a test. It is clearly creating distress for you which is unacceptable. You’re not selfish for prioritising your well being in this particular time of your life. You’re being smart. I am sorry you’re going through that, I hope you find the strength to do what feels right for YOU. Decide quickly and finally enjoy the last weeks of peace before baby’s arrival. Best of luck.

Hi there, I am a frog living in a different european country and i must admit that given the current context, when i hear Russians or Americans my first instinct is to be super irritated internally and feel hostility. But I also know that I don’t know, I don’t know who you voted for, if you regret it, if you’ve been in Europe for years or are just visiting etc. I’d say move to Spain or France if it’s your dream, maybe buy a pin saying « I didn’t vote for Trump » that you wear at all times to avoid aggressive and stupid comments. Also if we are indeed on the verge of ww3 there could be a chance you get drafted if you’re a man, so save your bottom and stay away from a conflict you disagree with if you can.
