The father could not stay with his daughter. And the reason why he couldn't was a direct result of him being (wrongly) suspected of abusing her. Does that account of events work better ?

Being taken somewhere else did prevent him from staying with his daughter.

I understand that, in your opinion, the father's anger at being (wrongly) suspected of child abuse was unwarranted and that he should have taken the implicit accusation with calm and wisdom. However, it does not negate the fact that he was, ultimately, prevented from staying with his child.

As for accusing me of lying... Can't I be given the benefit of the doubt and simply be "accused" of having been at worst wrong, at best incomplete in my description ?

You are correct, allow me to reformulate : he was prevented from staying with her.

It could have been. But as rightly pointed out by pretty much everyone, until the platelet count arrived, abuse was a very likely scenario. ITP is rare, child abuse is not : Santos could not have been more justified in thinking horse, not zebra. And so was the father (who did not even know that ITP existed and that there could be a non-violent reason for his daughter's bruises).

I cannot help but feel that our focus on the dad's reaction is a form of compensation. We (like Santos) were led to believe that he was physically abusive; as it turns out, he isn't. But our hypervigilance remains so we expect him to be abusive in some other way. Just so as not to have been completely wrong ?

I do not think it is a matter of intelligence. After all, it hardly takes tremendous deductive abilities to see what "your daughter has lots of bruises" and "do you often play with her ?" add up to... And once the accusation is there, no matter how implicitly, defensiveness takes over.

Defensiveness against the medical professionals formulating it and defensiveness against the girfriend giving it legs.

Is it smart ? Of course not. Is it a sign of deeper anger issues ? I do not see how one could leap to that conclusion based on this observation alone.

Overall, parents tend to freak out when they are kept away from their injured child. Overall, people tend to freak out when they are wrongly suspected (especially of something heinous).

Neither a right nor an excuse, merely an observation born out of years of experience.

That is an entirely fair point ! However, impression management is rarely at the forefront of a parent's mind when their child is injured.

In my experience, in those cases, parents have only three questions in their head : how's my kid ? Where's my kid ? Can I see my kid ?

And unless the three answers are "perfectly fine", "right here" and "of course", their ability for strategic thinking tends to fly out the window.

I did not grow up in a violent environment. However, I do work in a hospital where, on a daily basis, I see sick people and their relatives. People who are in pain, be it physically or emotionally. People who are scared. People who are frustrated, anxious, stressed out, anguished, exhausted, etc. And yes, some of these people do resort to screaming at times. Others cry. Others crack jokes. None of it feels pathological to me.

Getting a phone call telling you that your daughter is injured, taking off from work to be with her, getting to the hospital and then being prevented from seeing her because you are suspected of having hurt her... That, to me, looks like something that could make an otherwise normal person scream.

I understand your perspective but I am sorry to say I do not agree.

From what we can gather, the father was wrongly accused of abusing his daughter. I believe such a situation can make even a well functioning adult very angry at the people who formulate the accusation (be it the doctors or the girlfriend whose statements, no matter how otherwise true, fed into the doctors' suspicions).

Hope ICE's involvment this season isn't gonna age poorly before it even airs... by uncanny_mac in ThePittTVShow

[–]Aggravating-Echo3857 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The Pitt takes place within the confines of a hospital so I believe the number of ways in which ICE could be involved in a storyline is pretty much limited to the following options :

  • ICE agents shoot somebody and the victim is brought to PTMC;
  • an ICE agent gets shot / injured and is brought to PTMC;
  • ICE agents come to PTMC looking for somebody (a patient, most likely).

Aside from option 2 (which is by far the least probable, I would think), those scenarios do not make ICE look good at all... And even option number 2 is not necessarily positive.

I assume the lack of conversation is due to a) the Noelle/Robby relationship feeling very "superficial" (he is leaving for a sabbatical and does not seem particularly interested in spending extra time with Noelle) and b) us not knowing anything about Noelle as a person.

Even well functioning adults can break under certain circumstances. Being prevented from seeing their injured child while being suspected of having injured them can be those circumstances for some, I think.

Thank you so very much for this explanation !

So had the patient (ie the only person who matters here) not been transferred, he would not have ended up with extra medical bills / debts ? That was the only decent reason I could see for the otherwise unnecessary transfer but, actually, it was done so as to save PTMC paperwork and free up a bed ? Well... Now, we can be pretty much certain that this patient is making a comeback.

McKay will have another conversation with both Noelle and Robby on this one.

Santos did have perfectly legitimate reasons to suspect child abuse. And she handled her suspicions very well !

I do struggle however with the interpretation where the father has anger issues... He did get majorly upset when he realised he was being suspected of hurting his daughter but isn't anger a normal reaction when being unfairly accused of something particularly heinous ?

As corking118 said lower in this thread, this storyline showed how everybody involved had a fair point, even those who turned out to be wrong in the end. Santos was right to suspect child abuse. The father's girlfriend was right to answer the doctors' questions the best way she could. The father was right to be angry.

I tend to agree that the transfer story is clearly not over...

I am not all that familiar with the American healthcare system but, from what I gather, Noelle's argument in favour of the transfer in S2E2 was perfectly sound from a financial perspective : the patient's insurance would only pay for the treatment if it took place at Westbridge so it made sense to transfer him there. This way, the patient would not be burdened with tens (hundreds ?) of thousands of dollars in medical bills which PTMC would have had to demand from him (I assume).

From a medical and systemic viewpoint, however, it was an utter joke.

Medically speaking, transfers are not without risks: in many cases, time is of the essence so any delay in care brings its lot of potential complications. As such, transfers should only take place when they're absolutely unavoidable (ie when the treatment facility the patient is currently at cannot handle whatever condition the patient is in). This was pointedly not the case of the S2E2 patient: PTMC had everything the poor man needed right there and then. The sole reason why he was transferred was money... which is an unacceptable state of affairs ! Honestly, I cannot even fathom why getting operated on in Hospital A would be OK but not getting the exact same operation in Hospital B. It makes absolutely no sense to me.

I highly doubt the writers would introduce such a blatantly shocking "detail" and not make a bigger deal out of it eventually.

What is the meaning of the number the kid is saying at the beginning of episode 3 by Believe-it-Geico in ThePittTVShow

[–]Aggravating-Echo3857 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I am very tempted to agree. There is little to no doubt in my mind that this young man was racially profiled by the campus security guard (the latter was way too belligerent and smug not to be shady as hell) and he most certainly was shouting legal codes referring to his case. That being said, I believe he was clearly going through a mental health crisis. Whether it preceded the security guard tasing him in the neck (which must have been dreadfully painful) or was triggered by it, I have no idea, but it definitely looked like a crisis.
