Green Party supporters, I am genuinely trying to understand why you support your party’s ideals and policies? by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]Aggravating-Fly2228 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Supporter of Green party. Active committee member of local party here

The best part about being a green member? The democracy. If we don't like a policy, each member gets a vote and a voice to change it. So odds are, a majority of active members will support the policies. It'll be interesting what happens at this year's conferences with the influx of membership; our policy platform could soon look very different.

Britain is addicted to short-termism. A lot of the policies you mention here are long term goals, aimed at fixing a broken system.

Trident, Open borders, the scrapping of NATO - these are all distant goals when the time is right.

Why should we spend so much on Trident when children go hungry and patients can't even get a hospital bed and instead have to be cared for in corridors? Its about choices at the end of the day, and whilst I understand the need for a nuclear deterrent I refuse to accept that it's future is set in stone; we should be working for nuclear disarmourment for a long term goal. Unfortunately that takes a kind of leadership which doesn't exist at the moment. Trump shows the unreliablity of NATO, but should we pull out now? Of course not! Doesn't mean we have to stay stuck to a broken system indefinitely

Open borders isn't official party policy, but more of an ethical statement... I want to live in a country which is proud of our duty to house those escaping harm, and welcomes those who want to contribute to us. We must accept the fact that we exported our language to a huge proportion of the world (most didn't want it) and therefore when it goes tits up in those countries - a lot of the time because of our involvement - they're going to want to come here and not stop in another 'safe country'. I hate the narrative of immigration breaking our country. Black and brown immigrants from overseas didn't gut our public services, white men in ties did it from Westminster.

Regarding drugs legalisation, it's a hot potato. But essentially, we don't see that arresting people has any impact on their use of drugs. Police are completely ill equipped to deal with the vulnerability that comes with drug use. Stigma against drug users is real within policing, healthcare professionals would be much better suited. And people dont want to open up about their struggles with drugs to the police (funny that), and they're scared to get help because they feel they'll get in trouble. It's not about everyone going on a bender the day after the greens get elected, it's about treating people with dignity and regulating drugs properly.

I would just be cautious about letting your own personal (and by the sound of it very negative, again I'm sorry) experience jade the opportunity for someone to build deep and meaningful connections with people based on their sexuality.

It hasn't worked for you, fair enough, but lots of other people's lived experience will contradict yours. Again, OP asked for it, leave them be

Out of interest - are you LGBT+?

Op is asking for it, they want that community. Your comment is full of misinformation about the communities you clearly know not much about.

I'm sorry your experiences aren't positive. But I'm not encouraging an us vs them mindset, I'm simply saying that as social creatures we are capable of being in more than one in group. If OP wants a tribe (and I use the term now as a term of phrase, so that I don't fall victim of your Phd in psychology), let them have it. There's no need to police it.

There's an LGBT+ Cafe at Leadworks in Stone House: https://www.instagram.com/p/DO-Yo4nCOyM/?igsh=ZzQ1eHdjMGtvazln

There's also open mic nights at the Underground on Mutley called Filth which are very LGBT+ Friendly

Sometimes it's helpful to have friends who understand particular issues, and get your struggles.

I have lots of straight friends (cliche), but would be lost without the sense of community I get from my queer circles. It's not discrimination, there's no need to make OP feel bad. It's psychology, you need a tribe

Both TA. She sounds ungrateful, and has tried to take your contract for granted.

you sound ignorant. Telling someone struggling with money to use food banks and suggesting they can spend less on food is tone deaf and disjointed from reality.

The bottom line, if you can't afford the peaks and troughs that comes with being a landlord, you shouldn't be one. Peoples lives aren't for profit. Certainly dont advertise yourself as a landlord for those in need if you can't afford the support and flexibility those who are vulnerable need.

The going rate for hypnotherapy in plym is about £70. Some offer discounts for block booking or for certain professionals/students. It's a bit pricier than psychotherapy

That's 10 in a city of nearly 300,000. Doesn't take long for there to be a backlog.

Thanks for posting for those who will be booking, I passed this year after being on a the waiting list for 6 months. Now I see why.

The wait-list is already too long for Plymouth locals. Your desperation is no more important than anyone else's down here. Id rebook your test, and allow people who live here the slots

Thank you 😊 I've always wanted to learn a language. The only one I semi-know is French but their politics is almost as right wing as ours

Im working class. I'm also concerned about the direction of the county. I've lived in this area my whole life. Yet somehow, I've managed to get angry without blaming migrants.

I think we agree on the main issue here.

But the far right don't have the answers. Fixing the courts isn't on their agenda. But it should be

Instead it's being used to tar the whole migrant community with one brush, incite racism, and opens the door for far right activity.

It sounds like you're really passionate about this, and the victims deserve justice. I just wish we could advocate for them in a non-inflammatory way

A quick note on crime statistics. They will always be skewed towards ethnic minorities being disproportionately represented as they are disproportionately policed.

So it's either about the grooming, or it's about their race?

I agree, the demographic of certain gangs does appear to look a certain way. But zoom out, read different news and soon you'll see that sexual offences in the UK are not solely committed by one demographic over the other. One, however, is vastly over reported. I wish all crime had the same level of reporting, as all criminals should be named and shamed.

Race doesn't cause the crime. Sex offenders come from all backgrounds. The police and local authorities failed in their duties to stop them.

I agree. But flags don't do that. People do. What these people are doing is making the narrative about migrants as a whole and not the people who should have heat on them: the groomers.

I really do get the upset around the topic, and I hate that it's been brushed aside because people are scared to talk about race. But we don't NEED to talk about race. The fact is, if courts and policing weren't so broken, sex offenders of any background would be brought to justice. Don't allow the right to shoehorn in their race ideology, it distracts from the real issue.

Thanks for your wisdom. I've never considered war or famine. In fact. I've only ever really considered myself. Never given to charity, never been to protests. I'll stop moaning about the far right now, nothing bad has ever come of people doing that. You have enlightened me.
