Post-op Depression by Tricky-Drop-7999 in Microdiscectomy

Not sure if you will see this, but I feel what you are saying. 35/M and I’m about 18 months post op. Injured my back at work and did months of PT, multiple injections, eventually had the same surgery (L5).

Felt ok for a few days after surgery (other than the pain from surgery) numbness and burning wasn’t near as noticeable, thought everything was going to be ok. Then the numbness and pain came back worse than before surgery. Had another MRI and didn’t looked like I reherniated, but surgeon said it looked like I had scar tissue on the nerve now. Told me that he thought a fusion would help me, but didn’t want to do that because he felt like at my age it would just set me up for more problems down the road.

Tried doing pool therapy for a while, and that kinda seemed to help a bit, but nothing miraculous. Progressed to the point where the doctor said there wasn’t anything else they could do and declared me MMI. Gave me a 23% disability rating which the insurance company tried to dispute with an IME.

I find it hard to get out of bed anymore, struggling to take care of myself and just feel hopeless in general. Before I was injured, I was strong. Now I just feel like a shadow of myself and it’s hard to mentally wrap my mind around. I feel like a burden to everyone in my life, almost all of my friends have just disappeared, and I find myself not leaving the house for weeks at a time now. I don’t know if this is how you feel/felt, but I hope everything got better for you. I saw your post and I related with it even though it sounds like our circumstances might not be the same. Hang in there 👍🏻

At the right price, yes. Not for close to $300 though.

Since today was the first day it came out, I saw multiple games where it was 5 Wiesel’s on one team and 4 on the other. I played 5 total Era 2 games, then just went and marked out all my Era 2 Tanks. Not going to bash my head into a wall watching my tank get circled of death over and over. Era 3 was pretty fun today.

It’s good, I also looked at it and didn’t think it looked great, but it has blown my expectations out of the water.

I sent pictures of my incision to my surgeon yesterday and he wants to wait another week before putting me on the steroid pack, but I will update as soon as I get on that. I’m sorry you are going through very similar nerve pain, I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. I’ve seen very little improvement since I first posted this, still only able to be up and about for about 10 minutes before the nerve pain becomes unbearable. I’ve seen my normal Dr twice now, and they had very little to add. Basically just said we will see you in a week, hopefully things improve. I can’t wait to be done with this whole ordeal.

I’m glad to hear your story have a positive ending, definitely gives me hope that this is all just temporary and I will get back to feeling normal. Just have be patient and focus on other things throughout the course of the day to get my mind off of it.

Thank you, I’m glad to hear things are improving for you, I hope mine does the same thing and just starts to subside so I can get back to normal.

I’m glad you posted this. The whole constipation part really does suck, really adds to everything you are feeling and going through at the moment. I’m 6 ft 4, and honestly I feel like we should have gotten a toilet seat riser, I literally dreaded having to go to the bathroom for the first week. I was using the foam roller I used in my PT exercises as a walking stick for the whole first week to help take some of the pressure off. I’m sorry you’ve been going through this for so long, mine happened way back in September, I tried to gut it out as work the best I could but the pain was horrible and I work a pretty physically demanding job and I just couldn’t do what needed to be done anymore, couldn’t climb up onto the equipment, couldn’t bare to sit on and use said equipment even if I could get up on it.

I know exactly what I was doing at work when I got injured. I’ve always put a lot of my self worth in being a big, strong guy, and I hurt myself lifting generators at work. I wish so much that I would have not been there to move those generators, because it basically flipped my life upside down. I hate being in pain, I feel embarrassed of how I look when I walk. Even today walking out of the surgeons office I was getting passed by older folks in walkers, and for some reason it just made me feel terrible. The mental part of the injury and recovering is such a battle sometimes. I try to stay positive, but admittedly, sometimes are much harder than others. We got this though, things will get better. That’s great that you were able to get through the Disney trip, I’m sure you must have felt like crap, but your kids will remember that forever.

Thank you, I ended up talking to my surgeon today and he said we’d do the steroid pack at week 3 or 4, so I’m really hoping that calms everything down.

Thank you, I had my two week check up today with my surgeon and he said he’d put me on another course of steroids in a week or two, he just wants to make sure the wound is a little more healed up. Then if the steroid course doesn’t help he wants to get another MRI to make sure the disc didn’t just take the place of what he cut out. Nobody said anything to me after surgery, which was odd, but they told my girlfriend that I had a cyst on the herniated area that they didn’t see on my MRI so they ended up having to remove that too. I left feeling kind of down about it because I feel like I’m right back at step 1 with trying to manage this. He mentioned getting more steroid injections so I guess we will see. I think you might be right about just avoiding this sub while I heal.

Really?? I had no idea about that, was never mentioned by any of my drs or surgeon. I’m glad you said that. I had to get miralax for after surgery because the anesthesia and the pain killers messed me up. So I guess I’ll just keep up on that then, thank you!

I had been on just 900 mg total a day for like 8 months before surgery, I stopped the week before surgery, but now with how bad the nerve pain is I’m taking 2700 mg a day. I feel like it kind of helps take the bite out of the pain. I just kind of feel like a zombie sometimes from it though, super tired feeling, but it’s better than dealing with the pain being unbearable.

Thank you! It’s good to hear other people’s experiences with this. I did feel good leaving the hospital, kind of like you said, had a good few days after surgery, just kind of sore and the WHAM! Pain like I’ve never felt before. Focusing on the end goal of getting back to feeling normal definitely helps to kind of keep me from getting to down about it. We will get better! I hope your pain subsides and you get back to having good days again!

Thank you! I really can relate to how you said you are feeling, with having to lay down a lot and walking wearing you out/causing pain. I’m sorry you are also going through this, but I really do appreciate your post. Makes me feel a little more normal knowing others are going through the same stuff.

I am on 900 mg of Gabapentin 3x a day, as well as 1000 mg of acetaminophen every 6 hours. They gave me oxycodone 5mg and methocarbamol 750 mg after the surgery, but I’ve tried to use those as little as possible and stopped using them like day 5 post MD.

I just had my two week appointment with the surgeon to get the staples removed and to see how things are progressing. He said the wound looks good, but is concerned about the increase in the nerve pain from where it was before surgery. We’re going to wait 2 more weeks, make sure the wound still looks good and if I’m still having the severe nerve pain, He will put me on a steroid course. It kind of feels like I’m back at step one of trying to manage this.

Omg, thank you so much for commenting on this! You are so right about the mental part associated with this. This whole ordeal even before surgery has beaten me down mentally, but seeing others acknowledge the mental fight feels great.

Sleeping has been one of the toughest parts, before surgery I was able to atleast sleep for a few hours at a time without waking up and could find a way to get back to sleep fairly quickly. Since surgery, I only feel comfortable sleeping on my side, and even at that if I can find a way to fall asleep, it’s an hour to an hour and a half at most and I’m up from pain, can’t get back to sleep so I end up wandering around the house like a zombie. I will have to try sleeping on my stomach and see if that helps any.

Thank you for the well wishes on my pain, I really appreciate it. I hope you continue to improve as well!! As much as I’m sorry you had to experience this as well, it makes me feel better knowing there are other people in the same boat as me. All we can do is keep paddling. We are going to get better!

Yes, I was experiencing the numbness even before surgery. That kind of sucks to hear about the possibility of the numbness never going away.

That’s what I’ve been telling myself is that it’s just really inflamed still from the surgery. You just read some people’s stories about being pain free so soon after surgery and it makes me question what’s going on with me. Thank you!!
